Do you think the shifter will outclass the TH8RS?

The Clubsport Shifter and Handbrake Thread

So, we all know about the Clubsport Shifter and Handbrake, and your no doubt pretty excited so, just for ease, I decided to gather all the relevant information about them so you don't have to do it yourself!

Clubsport Shifter

The Clubsport Shifter is maybe one of the products that Fanatec enthusiasts are getting pretty worked up for (and I hope it lives up to it's expectations) so here the prototype is! Rather beautiful, am I correct?

Material: Full aluminium with some steel parts

Mounting options: There will be screw inserts on the bottom. We will make an adapter for the Clubsport table clamp and the RennSport Wheel Stand.

Amount of gears: 7+1

Sequential option: We will implement it but only if this is not a compromise. We have a solution which could work very well in both modes

Haptic feeling: Very similar like in a real car. Perhaps we can even make the resistance adjustable.

Acoustic: A solid "clonck" instead of a "clack" but very silent

Colour/design: Silver as CSP. The shifter will be gated like in a Ferrari or Lamborghini

Style of gear knob: It will be exchangeable so upgrades are possible (leather, carbon, etc). The standard version will be an polished aluminum ball.

Size: We will try to keep the size of the PW shifter but it will probably become a bit higher

Compatibility: It will be backwards compatible to the Porsche wheel shifter and therefore compatible to all platforms. An USB adapter will be available optional to make it work with other wheels on PC.

Pricing: The target will be 99,95 € (incl VAT)/ 109,95 USD (excl. VAT)

Here was Tek Ei-Ichi's design and an interesting post from Thomas

I would like to show you a very special mod for our Porsche wheels.

The creator of these products is Teki Ei-Ichi of Japan and I think he did a brilliant job without having tested his products yet.

He first designed a shifter which looks just like the real thing.

Both products look like an outstanding piece of high-end Japanese engineering and I like it a lot.

His handbrake brings me into a real dilemma.

We already have a prototype of our ClubSport handbrake and it is about to be ready for production but I am seriously considering to scrap our current design and let Teki Ei-Ichi help us to develop the CSHB.

Here is a drawing of the CSHB. The lever can be mounted lying or standing. Inside is a simple spring mechanism with potentiometer. There will be several holes on all sides to mount it. Size will be much smaller than the TEI handbrake.

The shifter seems to be much more expensive to produce than our planned CSS which should sell for about 100 USD/€ but how much more would you be willing to spend for a shifter in this quality?

Opinions please!

The release date was supposedly the end of 2012, so it must be soon!

Clubsport Handbrake

Now I Guess this is the hardest part to uncover as not much has been said, but i've searched the web quite a bit and here you go:

Now, I must admit, this stuns me. Just look at this post! Precision doesn't matter, no contactless sensor, making affordable, is this a standard handbrake or clubsport?

If you were worried about Clubsport Handbrake compatibility on Xbox 360, worry no more. It looks like Fanatec convinced Microsoft to implement it into their console as a standard feature, so we can expect Forza Motorsport 4 and other important upcoming racing games to fully support it.

There will be no Playstation 3 compatibility though - at least for now.

Besides that Fanatec also wrote that the Clubsport Handbrake will use a potentiometer and not a contactless sensor, because precision does not really matter and they wanted to make it affordable.

Here is another similar post but with some useful information:

The Clubsport handbrake will indeed connect to Clubsport pedals to make it compatible on consoles and will work with Forza Motorsport 3 and Forza Motorsport 4 as an analog axis. We can probably safely assume that it will have a USB port for PC racers, but you will need Clubsport pedals to use it on Xbox. Maybe CSR pedals will also do the job, since they will have similar electronics and makes sense to make as many products as possible compatible with each other.

Right, so they're want to keep it affordable by not using contactless sensors, yet you need clubsport pedals... let's just hope they do get it to work on the CSR range of pedals, seeing as they seem to currently be the difference between standards and clubsports, sitting just in the middle.

Conclusion

Let's just hope Fanatec don't let us down, i'm not so worried about the shifter but instead the handbrake... OPINIONS?

The reason I created this post is due to myself feeling necessary to join in, so please give me some feedback, was this useful!?

Thanks for reading!:)

Great post 👍

You can also find new prototype photo of CSS in Fanatec web under CSL Seat photos.

Great post thank you, lots of info and nice pictures, this shifter is my next sim acquisition, any idea when it should be available?

The shifter looks great but...

In what sim game would you even use a hand brake? I'd have just made an aesthetic version with a button on it to activate the handbrake. Oh well thats just me I suppose.

Of course there is no need to use it in circuit racing, but many people use it for drifting and I mainly need one for rallying.

Agree with others, great thread.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm looking into making a shifter buyers guide or something, good idea or not

I have no doubt by June, but should be pretty soon. I dropped my money on a TH8RS. Not to say i'm not an admirer of Fanatec's products, but They said it would be out like 2 years ago. If you want a shifter now, then TH8RS for realism or Lightning SST for speed (SST costs a bit more, but it is quite literally bullet proof)

Thank you Alex, I am in no rush, no need to change, just feel like improving on the feel of my shifter, so I will wait for it. Not crazy about mis-matching, except if there is no viaible alternative.

Have anyone seen a video of the shifter being used or only held/pictures?

You have not included the that in your post that goes with the information in it, something we should not forget.

I do not see why people keep thinking it is coming. It would be very nice if it did. How many improvements and changes it must have been through by now. Must be amazing now. Maybe too expensive?

Very sad really :(

It looks like it would be pretty easy to convert one of those drift oriented "hydro brakes" to sim racing use. Some of them are well made and look decent too.

Only every 500 meters or so  Handbrake is extremely useful in hairpin turns. That is one of the reasons why todays WRC cars are faster than even the monstrous Group B cars of the day. You can do without it in Gran Turismo but it's a nice feature to have 👍

Wow. I didn't realize it has been that long.

Not that we are entitled to it, but I wish Thomas would give us some form of update.

IMO, if I were him I would try to get it out at around the same time the A/C tech preview is released.
