Cockpit driving position, do you like it?

If the screen didn't shake so much then I'd use it.

Exactly this. I love the cockpit view in iRacing and even F**za has a more useable cockpit view in my honest opinion. For some reason, I cannot accurately judge my speed when viewing the track from GT5's cockpit view.

I find that it helps a bit if you go into "quick options" (or whatever the in-race pause menu settings are called), when you increase the cockpit mode zoom, it will be a little easier if you are used to bumper view. But I always use bumper view; if I don't, I drive like a drunk

I like the cockpit view, you should try it in 3D, its a whole new experience. When I first tried it, I used a Lexus LFA with stock exhausts. The sounds is sick. Well, back on topic, the cockpit view is awesome in 3D. You can see the interior, the steering wheel and the A-pillar all in 3D. You really get the sense of speed. I love it.

I use the cockpit cam about 80% of the time I drive premium cars. I love it. Especially in the Ferrari 599 and the Kubelwagen. :D It just adds so much to the immersion for me.
Unfortunately in some cars you're way to close to the steering wheel in my opinion (Alfa Romeo Brera for example).

Holy crap.
Single screen users try this.
Go into settings> display>multimpnitor options.
Screens 1×1 and turn the slider bar down to 50%. All you can see is the top of your wheel and the head bob when you break is immense.
Not really useful but the detail in that 2 inches of 430 scudera steering wheel you can see is amazing ;)

I have been rurnning this at 94% regularly and it provides a slightly better view for me. You can barely see the top of the windshield so you get a much taller field of view, albiet a little narrower.

I will wait for PS4 1080p@60fps@3D with virtual reality helmet and real head-tracking for it. GT5 looks 2 times worse in 3D. (technically, not about impression)

BTW - I miss GT5P cockpit view. But admidt - GT5 is more real.

At least give us option to change camera stiffness! It's real for camera mounting in real car but cockpit view was supposed to be "human eye view" wasn't it? And human head absorb most of the shaking.

I remember being able to adjust the FOV in Forza3 that way but when I tried in GT5 a few months ago I couldn't. Have they added more settings since then?

Edit: You were right, you can indeed adjust the FoV but I only seem to be able and make it narrower, bummer :/

The field of view is quite wide at default so I don't think you would want to make it wider anyway. But a way to adjust head position would be great, like in Microsoft's Flight Simulator.

Actually, I was recording some replay footage from my Mercedes 300SL, and the view used here has a narrower FOV (see how the bumps, corners and hills of the track seems to be accentuated compared to how it looks when driving?) and the camera position is waaay back. I think something in between this and the default cockpit view could be nice.

How is that you guys think that the cockpit view is too close to the wheel in most cases?
I feel the opposite: I find it's unrealistic to be able to see almost the whole cockpit. In real life one focuses mainly on what's outside the windscreen and what's around in the car essentially becomes black/invisible. Therefore I usually use the "zoom" or "extrazoom" setting, with the latter feeling generally more realistic but hindered by the limited horizontal field of view that standard TV screens provide (at a 16:9 ratio).
I didn't say I wanted to see the whole cockpit, I use the "zoomed" view but I don't feel any depth, I don't feel like in the car.
Also the shaky camera is definitely a turn off.....it hurts my eyes. What we see is what the helmet of the virtual immobile pilot (GLUED TO THE SEAT) sees.
And the sound? What I hear in cockpit view...and "bumper" cam, and roof cam..is a mix of this:

(PLAY THEM TOGETHER)

and this

at very low volume.

Let's put it this way: if the cars in GT5 had realistic noises (like in PCC 2007 mod for rFactor http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=PCC 2007 ) I would forget about all this.

I can identify with this. Would love to try it in 3D before I have a committed opinion.

I use cockpit view for fun - and never compare it to real life. Nice to see what's inside these cars - if only as virtual examples.

I never use cockpit view for racing, just only for sheer driving pleasure.
For racing - I always use what the hoi polloi label 'bumper cam.'

Nice to have the cockpit option, though, for the peanuts I pay to experience it.

The amount of shaking makes it hard to focus. I also felt it to be a little low sometimes, but maybe that's just me. It's good, but like many things in this world it could be better.

Love it but not for online: Lose about a second per lap in cockpit due to the lower visability. :( I think you all have to agree when I say that the attention to detail PD put into the premiums is stunning.

I can't stand the bumper cam, really. It's too low to the ground, meaning you can't see around any cars near you.
The chase cam feels rather cheap to me, though it does have its uses (ex: Toyota 7).
I love the cockpit cam, but tend to get distracted looking at all the gauges and dials and such in the cockpit.
Roof cam is my preferred for when every last inch of the track counts.

The "bumper" cam has the same height as the cockpit view. It seems lower because you can see more of the road below the normal line of sight (due to the lack of cockpit).

I love the cockpit view.
I wish this view was a feature for ALL the vehicles in game.
(even if we had a generic version for standards)
I play Gran Turismo with my G27 wheel, and STILL use the cockpit view from time to time.
I think the cockpit view adds to the immersion of a driving/racing game.

Same here. I'd use cockpit view if it wasn't too low and too close to the dash. The horizon needs to be up close to the rear view mirror. But roof view gives me a more lifelike view of the road, great feel for the car's center of gravity and how it's handling - except those few dumb cars in which it's actually some stupid hood view.

I did play around with it, and those who can do it well get applause from me. Those who can't stand the shaking though are just strange. It's very minor, not nearly what you experience on the average road. You should watch some Shift replays if you want to see annoying cam shake. ;)

I agree here.

I use cockpit view for every single PC sim with no issue at all. No trouble judging the car width and sense of speed, direction and feel connected with the car. But for some reason I have none of that in GT5 and just feel completely unconnected and strange. I just cant really put my finger on why.

So I just use the roof cam and be done with it, really is a good view actually.

I only use the bumper cam. Like the other have stated, the cockpit view shakes too much especially at high speed.

About the midget comments, there is a big difference between this:

It's very important to adjust the player and game view acording to your setup(screen size, view height, angle and distance from the screen and gt5 cockpit view angle). Also the ride height of the car is realistically translated into the game. The POV of an Elise is significally lower to the ground than a BMW M5.

I really wish that we could turn off the steering wheel and only see the dash because I don't need to see 2 wheels and 2 sets of hands. Mine are enough!

I find the best cockpit views are the smallers cars. The honda Civic for example, The dash board is very low on the screen so it let's you see more of the road.

I ran alot of NASCAR online before and I tried using the cockpit view to make it more authentic but couldn't deal with the massive amount of shaking and horrible 70% of the screen taken up.

But yes being able to move the camera even up or down would help. Also an option to turn off the shaking.

I don't dislike it, I can clearly see the road ahead so I've no gripes tbh. However I don't use it though as its different for every car and you have to adapt to the different driving positions, When I use a car in cockpit view and then get into another I'll hit hardly any apexs due to having to learn it again, which is no good when your only doing 5 lap races online. I always use the bumper cam for that reason but its nice to use the cockpit for cruising :)
