Having played the game for a few weeks now, I have to admit that for the most part I don't have such a problem with standard cars anymore. Mainly because I always race in bumper cam, so the graphic quality of my car is irrelevant for the actual race.

Reason for this is that while the cockpit view for some cars is very impressive, I feel that it always gets in my way. I honestly can't play more than a minute or two inside the car before having to move to the bumper cam.

I'm not sure why this is? Maybe it's because I never actually look at the interior, and as such it's only a frame making the area I look at smaller?

Looking at other threads it seems that quite a number of GT5 players, and especially the ones taking the game very seriously (I'm just at level 16 myself) say that cockpit view is essential. But not for me, anyone else feel the same?

I love the cockpit view for the immersion and feel that no other view provides. I will use the cockpit view even in race cars that obstruct most of your view, it just feels right to me, like I'm actually sitting in the car driving it. It's also cool to see the interior of cars that you would never get the chance to see in real life. I'm warming up to the hood/roof cam though because that's the view I use for Standard cars, and it seems like my lap times are somewhat faster because of the clear visibility. I still prefer cockpit view at the end of the day though.

Cockpit view adds to some realism, especially when your tv is of an appropriate size.

I agree! 42" 1080p TV does the job nicely! The cockpit view is also very helpful i find.. especially when the back end of your car starts to slip and you need to correct it... especially while drifting.. you can see which direction your wheels are turning and correct it easier.. i find that on the other views i tend to over correct and end up spinning!

especially after you upgrade the tv, going from a 25" relic to a 42" HDTV makes it easier to see out of especially the C4 WRC. Anyway i find im able to hold those minute slides that happen when you carry too much rear brake or brake toolate into a corner much better

It took me awhile to get used to the cockpit view in GT5P. I've use it before even as far back as NFS:Porsche Unleashed and Grand Prix Legend (and Crammond's GP3 and 4). If your screen is too small or you sit further back from the screen, it may make more sense to use bumper cam. And bumper cam is still the best view to go fast regardless of how well you've adapted to the cockpit view.

It's only when I've bought a wheel and moved my sitting position right in front of the TV (32" screen) that the cockpit view becomes more immersive. And with GT5's added FOV options, you can choose the one that gives you more of the track view since it's the closest to a bumper view. One thing you need to consider is that when you decrease the FOV (you see less of the side), the sense of speed also decreases. But if you're willing to adapt, it's probably the best compromise between a bumper cam and interior/cockpit view.

What he said! :)

I love cockpit view, but for GT5 it just bothers me, it cuts off too much of my view even sitting at my desk with my 32" 1080p only 4-5ft away.
I can play PC racers all day on my 24" at the same distance without the feeling, but something about GT5 irks me.
I can't tell if its the HUD, extremely little view (in some cars) or the rearview mirror that bothers me, but something is just wrong about it.
A wheel may help...
The interior also feels really floaty and kills the sense of speed.

When you are driving a real car, you look out the windscreen and get a pretty much uninterrupted view of the road. You look down to see the instruments.

With the in car view you get all that as one view which is not what the real thing is like. The in car view is like you are sitting almost in the back seat!

If your windscreen took up the whole of the TV screen, with maybe a bit of screen pillar and you could just glance down to see the instruments then maybe I would use it. The better option as things are, in my opinion, is the "bumper" cam view.

Holy crap! Another elder has resurfaced after GT5's release!

I'm not sure how many people are aware, but pausing while driving gives you an option to change the cockpit view. It isn't perfect; it's just an easy zoom, at two different levels, but it means less of your TV's screen real estate is taken up by interior, but you still get that proper feel of being in the car, rather than sat on top, or slightly behind an invisible bumper.

Cockpit view definitely isn't perfect, but I chalk that up almost as much to the viewing mediums we're stuck with for now as much as PD's designs. A customizable in-car camera location would be perfect, but this is PD we're talking about; something like that doesn't seem too likely!

Oh... and driving the McLaren F1 solves a lot of the issues ;).

I shift between cockpit and bumper. I am faster with bumber view.

But sometimes playing in cockpit is a lot more fun. I love to drive in the facebook Jaguar with cockpit view :-)
