A few days ago, Codemasters tweeted about a community survey on their DiRT account, asking us to 'take part in our community and help us shape the future of off-road racing games'. I took the survey, and be warned, it's very long, with 70 questions, but they're all decent questions and could be a sign of things to come.

You can read the Codemasters blog about the survey here. There is also a link to the survey in the blog.

Are they possibly developing DiRT 4, or another off-road racing game? Could they be developing a game based on all aspects of off-road racing and not just rally/rallycross?

I like the idea of racing off road, but after doing that survey, it really shows I'm not a huge fan. Of all the offroad games listed, I've only played DiRT3

Another funny thing about the survey is that I basically answered the second half of the survey in the "what you liked most about your favourite racer and what makes it desireable"

You know what I really miss? Test Drive Off-Road. Those were the best off-road games of their day & the last one, Wide Open, was the best! Also 4x4 Evo was the NFS Underground of off-road racing. If Codemasters delivers a game that's a combo of TDOR & 4x4 Evo then they have my money. Of course this means the rally cars will be a small part of the game compared to all of the trucks, SUVs, Crossovers, etc.

If they are developing it, then I hope DIRT: SHOWDOWN signifies the removal of the arcadey elements from the game. I don't want gymkhana (as fun as it was, even though it was limited in scope) or rallycross, or any circuit-based racing. I want rallying.

One way to ensure that Block doesn't get in is to not check off "related" when they ask you how closely you associate each driver to rally sport.

I actually liked doing the Speed Runs in Dirt 3. The execution level needed was amongst the highest in the game thanks to the ambiguously gripping tires. I just hope they put in the effort to make difficult routes or at least the ability to create your own route from scratch. I mentioned about Rally Cross 2 and how its map editing kept me playing for a longer time, despite how you're fixed to grids and block pieces.

That would be amazing 👍.

Personally, I'd like to see rallies that contain individual stages, rather than just driving over the same pieces of road in a different order. They managed just fine in Colin McRae Rally 2.0 - the only repeated stages were run in reverse, usually at night, and they were distinct enough to feel quite different - so I don't understand why they did it in Dirt 3.

Didn't someone from Codemasters posted a Dirt 4 picture hint showing Ken Block...?

Yes Paul Coleman posted this on his tweeter.

But there was no hint of dirt 4 in it and that was some month ago ...

That's not for DiRT 4. That was part of BBC 2's documentary about Colin McRae.

I thought I heard somewhere that Dirt 4 would go back to proper rallying which would make sense given the release of Dirt Showdown which could be acting as a spin off series for the Gymkhana stuff.

DiRT 4 will be a proper rally sim that was the whole point of them making DiRT showdown so they could have the 2 different sides get what they want properly

I hope to Cthulhu that you're right because Lamekhana really dragged DiRT 3 down for me. Cut that out, or even just set it off to the side as its own bullcrap mode, and I would have loved the game. As-is, I enjoy it for a bit and then Codemasters forces me to eat a turd pie (or else drop it and move to another game.)

Must be the only one who wants Gymkhana in DiRT 4. What I liked about it in 3 was that it used the realistic physics so it felt like a proper achievement when you pulled off a successful stunt; Showdown's felt arcadey and unrealistic.

Somethings afoot on the DiRT Facebook page perhaps.

Tuesday:
Introducing the new R5 Fiesta...

...Who wants to take her out for a spin?

The DiRT series has gone downhill since Colin McRae's name was dropped. DiRT 2 was a good game but it signalled the start of a downward spiral since Ken Block was brought in as the new face of the series, which is why I never bought DiRT 3. The series might as well have been renamed as Ken Block: Gymkhana from DiRT 3 onwards.

Codemasters posted a teaser on their Facebook page. A new DiRT game or a HD version of CMR2?

Unfortunately, it is a stupid iOS version, so nothing good here.
Well, they haven't confirmed or said anything yet. But while it's not unlikely, I sincerely hope it's not the case. Damn them if it is. I personally would love to see Mcrae's Martini Ford Focus in DiRT4.

So, with the PS4 and Xbox One on the horizon, it would seem that DiRT 4 will be on the next gen consoles, which would allow for a more proper rally game. And here's my idea for what they SHOULD do:

- Keep the multi-disciplines, 'cause it's fun.
- Bring back the "any vehicle on any course" from Dirt 2
- Bring back the different careers, tracks and vehicles per discipline from Dirt 1 and add to those
- Keep the unusual cars like the 350Z and Z4 from Dirt 2 and Camaro and Mustang from Dirt 3
- Increase the Rally stage distances.
- Have full seasons and multiple classes for each discipline. You could even tie each discipline to it's own, real life series. Like WRC & Group B for Rally GRC and GRC Lites for Rallycross, etc.
- Keep the gymkhana from Dirt 3 and expand it.

GRC would be a perfect addition to the Dirt franchise and bringing back the semis and Raid courses and gymkhana would be great. I do, however, miss the any car on any track idea from Dirt 2. I don't really know why they took it out for Dirt 3. (Although, Dirt 3 was published by THQ, so that could explain some things.)

And, one thing I LOVE about the Dirt series was the unusual rally cars. Weaving cars like the Pontiac Solstice and Ford Mustang around the rally stages is a blast.

Really, all they need to do is take all the good parts of the first three games, expand on them, add GRC and extend the Rally stages and you'd have an awesome Rally game. Although, come to think about it, the first Dirt was a lot like that.
