Anyone else notice how Nintendo's consoles always tend to have really awesome codenames but their actual launch names.

I mean, the last three:

Codename: Project Reality - Actual name: Nintendo 64

Codename: Dolphin - Actual name: Gamecube

Codename: Revolution - Actual name: Wii

At this point we can guess that the actual name will never be as cool as the codename. Which kinda sucks. I mean, for a while, I actually thought the Wii was going to be called the Revolution, which fit with it's design and what they were trying to accomplish, and then, at the last second, Nintendo broke our hearts by announcing that it was actually called...the Wii.

64- Awesome name, simple and explains what exactly is different about it compared to other systems. "Project Reality" isn't really a name and never was, in fact the original name was actually the "Ultra 64".

Gamecube- Terrible name, seems like the name of a Chinese knock off console. Better than Dolphin though, could you really imagine saying to your friend "Hey want to come to my place and play some games on my Dolphin?".

Wii- From a marketing standpoint it's ingenious, it's extremely catchy and it's not easily forgotten. Even non-gamers know what a Wii is, they probably don't know anything about the 360 or Playstation 3 other than that they are game consoles.

Considering that now you tell your friend, "Hey, you wanna go play with my Wii?" Dolphin doesn't sound that bad. Revolution was an AWESOME name for the system. And really, I think "Wii" was cuter. But, I think they could have gone with Rev and satisfied the cute quotient just fine.

Don't try and teach your father how to...... Well you know.

How many of these things have they sold?

I don't hang out with people who have the maturity level of a 12 year old so I don't think there would be a problem.

Cute sells, Revolution just sounds like yet another game console, it doesn't attract the mainstream buyers like Wii does.

On the cute note, I'm constantly seeing girls of all ages wearing dolphin necklaces, earnings, shirts etc... I never see males(the main video game market) wearing dolphin accessories.

80+ Million.

I agree with the Revolution bit. I loved that name when it was first introduced, but if you sit back and think for a fraction of a second, you'll realize that the name was a perfect fit since day one.

Only? Thought they'd sold about a billion, already.

Wii is marketing genius. Cute. Funny. Naughty. The more talk shows, comedians and internet sites that make jokes about the name, the more people know it exists.

"Dolphin" would've been a great console name, too.

Except...no one's buying Wiis any more. Its sales have dropped considerably. The went from being the top selling console, to...I think it's last in global monthly sales at the moment. So, the Wii fade has dropped off.

Although, in the wake of the Earthquake/Tsunami in Japan, Sony could see a drop in sales for the next few months if there's a shortage of Japanese consoles...or, in support of Japan, Sony could see a massive increase in sales of the PS3 and PSP. (Nintendo is a "Japanese" company, but I believe their world HQ is in Washington State, USA)

Well, eventually sales were going to start falling since eventually everyone that wants one will have one.

Speaking of the Wii, has it died compared to PS3 and 360?

All I see are get this blah blah game bundled with 360 (Really xbox? That's the only catch line you got?)

Or Kevin Butler doing something strange, yet arousing on PS3 commercials.

Can't remember the last time I saw any commercials for the Wii on TV.

No, that's just the headquarters for Nintendo America. All the big calls are still made in Kyoto. It would be weird for a Japanese company to have the main hq on foreign soil.

If I released a game for the 64 called, "Army Attack Unleashed", it would be called "Army Attack Unleashed 64".

Likewise, "Army Attack Unleashed GCN".

Worse, "Army Attack Unleashed Wii".

yeah, Wii doesn't advertise nearly as much.

As for sales, Wii got to about 85 million units really fast and has pretty much stalled there. It's still selling units just not nearly as much as it used to. PS3 is only 2.1 million units away from the 360's 50 million units. Sony's sales have been increasing and MS has kinda stalled as well. You have to remember that the PS3 was the LAST system to be released.

Wii was released last, actually. A short while after PS3.
