It would be great if GT5 had a color shade suggestion system. It would be like this:

Best Shade Of:
Pure White
Dark Grey
Sky Blue
Crimson Red

I think you get the point.

I know people are always looking for a "real" white (looking at Q&A), etc.

Is this a good idea?

I think that wouldn't work due to difference in opinions.
My idea of the best blue maybe be way different than yours.

I am the same way with Grashopper... But they need to clean the paint menu up, badly. I can go into mine can count 10 shades of pure white.

The problem is that GT5 sticks to the manufactor provided paint colors. The exception is the PD provided chromes and other special colors.

You know what GT needs in the colour/painting department? An RGB colour wheel to select pretty much any shade you like which you can apply to any car at any time.

I know what you're thinking, this sounds very tricky and somewhat revolutionary but I think it can be done. You know why? Because every other racing game that allows you to paint your car has had this simple yet effective setup for at least 10 years!

Midnight Club 3 and LA, to my limited memory, had the color wheel feature and it was very useful. It also had body part customization, vinyl, and wheel dimension editing, but PD won't implement any of those.

It doesn't just stick to the manufacture, but the model too, why else would I have 10 pure whites, from all the Miatas and RX-7's...

I remember playing Top Gear Rally on the N64 back in 1997 and you could do almost any paintjob you'd like if you had the talent to do so. I had a lot of "police cars" ! (black car with white doors). PD needs to add that to GT. Seriously, that's all I'd do.

I agree. At the very least, colors should be stackable, maybe a higher level of grouping colors together (ie. red's, blue's, etc.) I don't know how PD would determine what shade of a certain color would be best, because that is simply a matter of opinion. On the other hand, I am happy that PD stuck to real manufacturer colors rather than "make your own" paint. It makes the game a bit more realistic.

It would be even better if the next GT games also uses actual real life car paints color chips, taken from paint catalogues of House of Kolor, Sikkens, PPG, 3M, Dupont, Spies Hecker, Max Meyer, Glasurit, Nexa Autocolor, etc. I still want PD to use manufacturer paint color like in GT5 in addition to aftermarket paint like above, but a color wheel can also be added for custom paint. So we have 3 kinds of paint, manufacturer, aftermarket, and custom, everyone would be happy then.

Going even more off topic, but Rage Racer had a fully customisable paint system and it was released in 1996 (in Japan at least).

I won't be happy until I have access to the Krylon spray paint color catalogue and I can give my Dodge Ram the DIY black primer finish that it needs to complete its transformation into hillbilly supercar.

We need something along the lines of this.. paint chip system is ridiculous.

Nothing against the idea, but I do respect that PD tries and does respect car manufacturers and their paints overall, Ferrari red is Ferrari red, cannot be mixed with Mitsubishi's Red (for example) like in so many other games that has the custom paint possibility.
A car enthuasist wouldnt bother with stickers especially when speaking about some classic cars like E-Type Jaguar for example, or how many people would actually want to see one in Matte Pink or Gloss Pink ?

Ferrari Red is Ferrari Red only by it's name. It's nothing more than a set of RGB values that can be duplicated on to any car. It's not like in real life where it's an exact mix of pigments, clear coats, and primers.

Why PD devoted such time to naming a bunch of colors is beyond me; and why they made such an atrocious paint system to begin with is just, sad.

Not to mention that even in the real world you can colour match pretty much any paint which is basically the same as having a colour wheel in a game.
