Colored Rims

Let my start by saying that this is not a complaint thread. I am very happy with GT5 and all of its progress. But I do have one little question. Why can stock rims that are able to be changed, not be painted? I'm sure there is a reason but id like to know. I personally think in many cases that painting a stock rim would make the car look better than changing the rims. Such as with the 458 or ZR1. Any feedback or ideas? Thanks 👍

Not sure why either, but yeah I agree.

Love the stock rims on the 458 and R34 GT-R but I would love even more to be able to paint them!

There used to be a glitch that would let you change the colour of the stock wheels, but it was later patched.

Not my pics.

It's a strange thing why they can't be painted, more often than not thanks to the paltry amount of aftermarket rims on offer in GT5 the stock rims suit the car miles better and would look even better painted.

I would think that you can't paint them due to licensing reasons. Manufacturers usually offer rims in one color and I would imagine that's the way whey want to keep it, for what ever reason.

They would have to re-model all 1000 rims to be able to be painted.

I don't think that's strictly true; not unless some wheels use textures, anyway.
Some Standard cars have wheels that are the wrong colour in GT5, but were fine in GT4 - many of these are the same generic grey colour. This suggests to me that they can be treated exactly like the car bodies and have practically any colour applied to them.

Additionally, I remember from GT3, when scrolling through the colours in the dealership, it used to blend between them, rather than "snap" instantly (it looked pretty cool); for those cars whose wheels changed colour with the body (I think the ZZ-II was one), they used to blend, too, rather than ping; the blend "animation" was different to how it would look if it were just blending two textures.

In short, there seems to be no real technical reason why the stock wheels cannot be painted, on either the Premiums (of which there is direct proof, above) or the Standards (less immediate, based on differences in the cars between games).
The real reason, as mentioned, is probably manufacturer Angst / control compulsions (Ferrari...) etc.

It's listed in the feedback section, give it some love. ;)

Personally I think it's got nothing to do with the manufacturers, you can put spoilers and splitters on the cars plus paint the entire car any colour you like so why would they be so picky about wheels? It doesn't make any sense.

How do we explain the pics above, though? PD clearly weren't bothered by the disparity between the Standards and the Premiums, since you couldn't even change the wheels on the Standards, so that's got nothing to do with it either.

What's left?

I think it was just an oversight by PD and they never thought about people wanting to paint stock wheels and since it was essentially a glitch in the game which allowed you to "paint" the stock rims they removed it because it was a mistake in the game. As for why they haven't added the ability yet I can only assume that there hasn't been much call for it by GT5 owners.

Well, if that's all it is, then I guess we know what to do... ;)
It can't hurt, even if it is those silly manufacturers :p

Personally I think it's a pain in the arse, especially for cars like the HPA FT565 Audi TT and the Merc SL Coupe '54 where the wheels are colour coded with the bodywork so you paint the car but the wheels remain the original colour unless you fit aftermarket rims.

That's assuming car brands always base their decisions on common sense even though I agree with you that painting stock wheels isn't any different than painting a whole car, or putting aftermarket (and paintable) wheels on them.
I don't think PD couldn't foresee that people would like this option, as I do think it's a license issue somehow.
It might be that those wheels perhaps have a separate license and that unlike the aftermarket wheels (where they did reach an agreement with the wheel manufacturers) some manufacturers objected (for reasons which may defy logic) and they simply didn't offer this option for all stock wheels.
If I'm not mistaken, it's also not possible to paint stock wheels in Forza so it's not an exclusive issue to GT5.

I really can't see that even being brought up when the developers are discussing the licence with the manufacturers to be honest let alone it being an issue, it seems too far fetched when you consider that the entire car can be painted. Also when you buy a car in real life you can do pretty much anything you like with it so I don't see the manufacturers objecting to it in a video game, plus there's games out there where you can paint stock rims, Midnight Club LA being one right off the top of my head and possibly NFS Shift and Shift 2 (although I'm not 100% on those as I havent played them in ages) I'm just pretty certain that if it was a manufacturers issue then it would apply to a lot more than just painting wheels.

I'm hoping they will have a used wheel shop in a future update with all the premium cars stock wheels available randomly.

They would have to re-model all 1000 rims to be able to be painted.

This is what I figured but it seems if some of the cars already come with different colored rims depending on which paint scheme you purchase, then many of them should already be modelled. And I figured any rim that is fully textured would be able to be color altered, but I'm also no programmer.

This is very possible but it seems that if they allow the external appearance to be altered through aero kits and aftermarket rims then there should be no problem with changing the rim color. Especially when many companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini offer their rims in several colors. I'd be plenty happy just with having the factory options if nothing else.

Sorry about the double post but I'm not sure how to put 2 quotes into one reply.

I would like that option, if I'm honest. I would also like a much larger selection of aftermarket rims and bodykits, so that cars can be made very unique.
