I was just sitting here browsing Gtplanet when I suddenly heard a loud boom followed by a rattling noise. Opened the dvd-player up and the cd in it was in pieces. I opened it up and managed to get all the pieces out, and now I've been testing it out and the dvd-player seems to work fine.

Now to my question. Is the cd explosion most likely due to a crack/fault in the cd or could it be the dvd player itself? Because I'd rather not sacrifice another cd, nor do I want to buy a new dvd player if I don't need to.

Anyone else got any experience of this?
 
What was the DVD drive doing at the time? because you said you were browsing GTPlanet so did you even know there was a CD spinning in there?

Also I assume we are talking about a PC drive and not a stand alone DVD Player right?

It's likely to be a cracked CD, thats whats happened to me but theres a small chance it might be the drive. I would find one of those old free internet CD's and stick it in to test a few times to rule out the drive.
 
I don't think it was doing anything. It was quiet at least. It was the cd of a game but I wasn't running it.

PC drive, correct.

I've been testing it and it seems fine. I just get a bit paranoid about it. I'll do some more testing I think.

I guess it was an old game, it's no secret that cd's don't last forever & to top it off they're sensetive to temperature.

If you haven't already seen it, check out when MythBusters try the myth that cd's can explode when spinning fast enough, hilarious! :)
 
It must have been in an idle spin if you weren't using the game because there wouldnt have been an explosion. If it was an old disk then its likely it just failed.

I have a 15 year old CD game which has a crack around the hub and I can see thats just waiting to explode! luckily I hardly ever use it.
 
It was pretty old (9 years or so) and had been used extensively. Guess that's what happened. Glad I don't have to buy a new player. :)
 
The old 52x cd rom players could destroy cds very well. Just a small crack and the pieces were flying everywhere!
 
It's more fun when you take the casing off. Safety goggles on and let her spin up. :lol:
 
During the early 2000's their were the 52x(10,400rpm) and 56x(11,200rpm) drives.

Cheap CDs and some good ones shattered and this caused the CD/DVD driver case to get big dints.

I would not use that drive as pieces will still be inside the drive and may cause more issues.

If you are up for it you can open the drive and clean it out or just shell out the $25 bucks for a new DVD-RW drive.
 
They still have 52x Drives for sale.

I swear you can get a 52xCD-R/DVD-R drive too. But a pure 16X DVD drive would spin faster than a 52x CD drive.

Anyway, I also had a DVD shatter in a drive recently. Unfortunately my drive was Fubar afterward. I wouldn't use it either.

It actually spins faster.

A 1X DVD spins at around 1530rpm at the inner edge, a 1X CD is around 500rpm at the inner edge. So a current max standard 18X DVD is around 27540RPM, whereas a 52X CD ROM is only 26000RPM.

I have cleaned it out quite thoroughly though. There doesn't seem to be any rattle in it anymore.

And not talking about inside and outside edges.

Just saying that the motor spins slower than CDs

BDs spin slow as hell but write faster than DVDs
 
I once had a game CD blow up and shoot pieces out of the slot loading DVD player I had in my computer at the time. It was awesome.

Well, yeah, exactly because of what the Calvin and Hobbes comic pointed out. I was just being an ass, obviously, cause that is what I do.

Though I know some people would jump on "correcting" either of our comments :rolleyes:

CAUSESE YOU AREE A TROOLLLL!!!111

Though if we really want to get down to the nitty gritty. As the disk is not perfectly rigid molecularly, the outside rotation probably does lag behind the inside rotation ever so slightly.
