Computer doesn't keep time

there was a 10 minute difference between the actual time and the time on my computer so i decided to reset the time .........after 1 hour, the comp. is already 3 minutes behind .......it's ridiculous ......what a piece!
Does anybody know why it might be doing this?

If you are running Windows XP, then it Auto Synchronizes the time to a server on the internet. Could that be the difference?
As Pako said, it could be the battery on your Motherboard is getting weak. :nervous:
Otherwise I'd blame it on the momentary power surge that happens when you turn on, or off your PC. Sometimes that interrupts the Motherboards Processes and the seconds you lose each time can add up to some significant slowdown. A good surge protector can take care of this. :)
And actually a last idea... are you playing around with the voltage and clock settings of your chipset? Nothing good can come of this... ;)

i'm running 98 SE .......battery on my motherboard? .....didn't know about that but i bought my computer in October ........haven't turned off my pc in about 5 days ........and trust me, i know little of computers so i don't think that i'm playing around with the voltage and clock settings of my chipset .......no idea how to do that .........it is now almost 5 minutes slow

it is now 6 mins slow .....it's like my comp thinks there is 62 seconds in a minute or the second hand is just lazy

it's 46 minutes behind now .........it never used to do this when i'd turn my computer off every day ......it's been running for a week now

Oh my lord. 46 Minutes!!! Did you try restarting?

I would think so. Maybe?? Not to sure. Ask Pako or something. He's smart. I am only 15 don't want to go and like break your computer on accident because I tell you the wrong thing.

My main work computer seems to "forget" to carry over the digit when the hour changes. AT least once a week it's off by exactly one hour.

Somebody's playing with me, right? No, once I actually waited by the computer when it was 10:59am.............sure enough, it changed to 10:00 almost a minute later. Darn eMachines!

The lesson here is to consult a watch.

For those of you that are having problems with your Windows clock, does your computer 'hang' every-once-in-a-while? Just sit there for a couple seconds and then start working again? During those times the Windows clock doesn't advance because it honestly doesn't know that time is passing. The computer has completely hung for one reason or another and time is not passing for it.

However, the hardware clock that is on your motherboard continues to run. That is a critical piece of computing and must be 100% accurate. So when you reboot, Windows check the motherboard's clock and resets itself.

A few reason why your computer might be hanging on occation ...

You've got bad hardware somewhere.
  • The disk controller for your hard drive might be messed up and when it goes looking for data it has to reset itself before it can do anything. That would cause the computer to sit while the controller resets. This happens with floppy controllers quite frequently.
  • You could have bad RAM. If you have a fairly inexpensive computer from a couple years back, this is a high possibility. They tended to use super cheap RAM when it was sooooo expensive. Now a-days, you can get a gig of the best RAM for a couple hundred dollars.
  • A network device on your network is sending out bad packets. This sucks and is very hard to track down. If you have a home network with very many devices, you aught to be on top of the situation anyway.
  • I've actually had a short in a keyboard cause this to happen with a computer before. Quick fix - buy a new keyboard. USB has been much more reliable on this front.
There could be an application running on your computer that is spiking the processor on occation.
  • If you dable in the ways of warez (and you know who you are), most likely you've contracted a bad virus or trojan. Format re-install. Don't touch warez anymore. Cleansing the system is the only true way to remedy this illness.
  • You have installed legitamate software, but unfortunately it's configured incorrectly. If you have an FTP, web, telnet, or any other various server running on your computer, make sure you have it configured correctly.
  • You have an application installed that was poorly written. It has a memory leak and your computer is struggling for RAM. Rebooting will quickly fix the problem, but you need to track down the application and STOP USING IT. There is no excuse for a program with a memory leak. These programmers should be shot on sight.

I would guess that our dear friend schumy has a program with a memory leak, since it was getting worse with time.
