in the land of stupidity
I'm having problems with this computer. It has been reinstalled (yesterday) and still all the problems remain.

  • Websites freezing up
  • It takes abnormally long for windows to start
  • it takes ages for youtube and other videoclips to load
  • sometimes when watching a videoclip, youtube, trailer, playing Superstar V8 racing, the computer shuts down and restarts on it's own. Or like a couple of hours ago, doesn't start anymore.
  • When playing Superstars V8 racing, the FPS drops from 55/60 to 10/15 and the game freeze for a split second a couple of times.
  • It's AMD 64 dual core 5400+, 2.8Ghz. 2 Gig RAM. Gigabyte motherboard. 8 GeForce 8500GT 1000 GB.

I have a similar problem, don't understand enough to help.
I can't play LFS or look at my own vids or phone download.
It's not the video card either cause mines fully upgraded and according to the system, it's working fine.

That sounds like a power supply issue. It will probably fail soon. It seems to happen when the system is loaded fairly well.

Sounds like faulty RAM to me. A PSU tends to fail, rather than slowly die, although this is often obvious through it getting noisier, it should still perform at normal rates.

RAM is cheap (unless you are on DDR). Long loading times for Windows screams that out. Check that the sticks are properly connected.

DDR2!

I just had the opportunity to try another graphics card (9500 GT). PC didn't shut down anymore but there was still a significant drop in FPS. Not as bad with my 8500 GT but still visible.

I want a programme to test/check RAM memory.

I haven't used it in a while, so I don't know the instructions.

My PSU went out slowly and blew up in the end. It was a cheap unit, but it didn't take anything out. Power supplies age and over time their potential output decreases.

Memtest86 is teh pwnge

You do realize going from an 8800 to a 9500 is a severe downgrade right?

Did some test with memtest86+, 3DMark06, FurMark, SiSoftware Sandra 2009, Everest 4.60 and all is fine. No errors, no broken things :D etc...

THE problem; video card is too weak to play games.

Results of 3DMark06

That would only explain this part

Just in case, you can check for bad sectors on your hard drive with this program:

Hasn't been resolved, yet. Computer shuts down when I'm playing Superstars V8 racing but not all the time. Sometimes I can keep playing without problems and sometimes it shuts down after playing less than 2 min.

When I tested the 9500GT, the computer didn't shut down. So, I think it's the graphics card that's causing problems.

There is one other problem though. Sometimes, certain programmes stop running, they freeze.

Every test I did, shows no errors what so ever.

Know a friend with a good power supply to test with?
Maybe. :sly:

A very good friend of mine owns a computer store and maybe he can/will help.

I think I'm going to upgrade this pc. If I install a new graphic's card, I definitely need a new power supply.

My problem: I can't choose which card I'm going to buy. I read a lot of reviews and benchmarks on Tom's hardware news, tests and reviews. and Futuremark and now I'm even more

The only games I play are race games. Isn't it so that certain cards perform better with race games than with the game they use for benchmarking? If so, which nVidia card is good for race games?

And another thing. Is nVidia still better than ATI? In 2004 - 2005, I had an ATI card and I sold it pure out of miserie.

That is more of a Nvidia vs ATI issue. Some games may play better on Nvidia or the other way around. I think Nvidia might currently have the edge. I have seen some racing benchmarks, but I think they used GRID. There may have been other racing games, but I don't remember.

I went with ATI for my new computer. But I read that Nvidia has better driver support. Each has their pros and cons. ATI cards support directx 10.1, but Nvidia's card don't support it now. But Nvidia has the whole CUDA thing, where their cards support Physx.

Take a look at this hierarchy chart. It's a bit outdated mainly at the top, but I don't think you'll be shopping there.

Some updates, on the Nvidia side you can add the GTS 250. It would be at the 4th tier down with the 9800 GTX+. On the ATI side you can add the 4770, it's performance is between the 4850 and 4830, so around 4th tier. It's a very efficient card, but there has been a good demand, so you may not see it in stock.

Clean the fan/power supply with a bursh/hoover. My PC did the same thing and that fixed the problem striahgt away.

I think I solved the problem. It's soooo simple.

I just deactiveted anti virus :sly:. And I upgrade from 2 GB DDR2 RAM => 4 GB DDR2 RAM.
