Confessions as to Why I Dislike the XBOX

XboX is a PC in a smaller package.. (don't say it's not a PC cuz they even run Linux on it) no doubt about it... this isn't necc. a bad thing tho...
Xbox does cost MORE to manufacture then a PS2 BUT is sold at a loss on M$'s part to stay competitive...

Xbox controller is cumbersome but the JDM controller is smaller and better to use so not a biggie

Until recently i never owned a console.. I was a hardcore dedicated PC fan.. and avid overclocker and hardware nut... always felt my PC was more powerful then a rinky dink little console...

in the end Alas I caved...

I coulda Chose between a new Xbox or a New Satin Silver PS2

either way I was gonna have the Console Chipped and both ways i can get boot leg games at $5/piece....

in the end I chose the PS2... all because i knew GT4 was comin out... and to play GT3 and mostly Winning Eleven 7 which is a great multiplayer game for me and my friends...and some other not so big deal titles like tenchu and Metal Gear and such

memory card isn't such a bad thing.. makes good for portability if i wanna bring my Garage over to my buddies house and exchange/swap etc...

hardware wise Xbox is superior... hands down... but in the end it's the TV that's the limiting factor.. it has such low and crap resolution of what? like 640x480?? so they crank up the AA to hide the jaggies...not everyone can afford a HDTV either...

If all titles were sold on all platforms.. i woulda never strayed from my PC... and woulda been happily drifting on my keyboard :P but because i can't.. i chose the older generation console but with IMO a few really Outstanding titles that made it the superior choice

I have both PS2 and xbox, both have their ups and downs :) I prefer neither over the other. The only system I wont buy is gamecube. When PS2 and XBOX2 come out I will buy both :)

Kinigit and ottoman you both have good points from different perspectives. But saying Xbox doesnt have enough good games cant be used anymore but for along time it was like that. I play Xbox more than PS2.

I just played Full Spectrum Warrior for about 3 hours straight and it is a pretty fun game. Being able to control 8 guys on the battlefield is a cool concept. The graphics seemed ok but the controls were a bit hazy at times when it switched from one group to another. The game was starting to be the same thing over and over again but ill play it some more tomorrow before I bring it back. Mabey Ninja Gaiden or Riddick will be in so I can check them out.

"Hmm... bottom line to me (even though it sounds cheezy to a non-gamer) xbox is for boys where PS2 is for men.
"

What the hell, it doesnt just sound cheesy, it sounds pathetic. I can't believe someone could actually write that and not feel stupid.

Well like I said, someone wondered about why I don't really like the XBOX. We all have reasons for why we like and hate things. And all because I said I hate something doesn't mean that I'm a corrupt person. Except SOME PEOPLE have to always wait until I screw up something or have a good time at least, to ruin things and prove that I'm as hateable as any lowlife. What's wrong with expressing views? So what? I said I didn't like it for the reasons specified. But if this can be made better to where I don't have to vacation from GTP, or continue to feel as if I should be shot between the eyes, this may change things. Read below.

I will admit that the racing games are pretty nice on XBOX. Yes, you read right. I played Rallysport Challenge, Project Gotham, and Apex for what I know. Had a chance to play DOA 3, but didn't really get a chance to. And it doesn't require a Memory Card. If possible, four people can tag along for some multiplayer action, and even more online with XBOX Live. And you sports fans will finally get EA Sports games online after PS2 players pitied you for not having this feature earlier (not saying I was one of them. Never was).

I never said the XBOX was a total disappointment. There are games that probably look best on the XBOX. I just was never a really big fan. You can't expect me to love everything you do. Some like rock music, I don't really. Some enjoy being troublemakers online, I rarely hold a grudge. So as I said, do what you want with the thread. I've confessed already. That's being a man, isn't it? When a man cheats on her girlfriend, he has to confess somewhere down the road. And I did my part. So let the thread die or do whatever. I'm not expecting to be perfect on GTPlanet. And pardon me if I'm such an ass for what I did. Having said that, stupid reasons or not, I've spoken. Oh, and by the way. When people have fears of something, don't you want to know WHY and HOW that person developed that fear? Anyhow, do what you want. Came to confess and get hated on. That's all.

And by the way, I AM apologetic about this. I initially didn't care to discuss why I haven't been a fan of the XBOX. As I said in the introduction, I'm not expecting people to win me over about this. I'm not saying that I'm going to make fun of something and show absolutely no remorse. Instead, I am just being honest. Everyone has their reasons for why they like/dislike whatever.

heehee... I love these discussions. I like all these fanboys all bashing each other. I find most fanboys to actually be little junior or high school students who got his PS2 for christmas from mommy. Thats why i find it pointless to argue with fanboys because they're usually young and still need some time to mature.
College students, even when they're poor, find a way to play PS2, Xbox and (maybe) Gamecube games. I remember my PS2 was always in use by SOMEONE when I first got Gran Theft Auto. That goes for Ninja Gaiden and KOTOR on the Xbox.
And of course if ur out of college, you can probably afford to buy another system and if you don't buy an Xbox because of some flimsy reason like "hyped-up gaming rig" you are just missing out on some great games and you should really open your mind.

A couple of games I'd recommend on the Xbox would be Ninja Gaiden and KOTOR. Riddick was okay but short and I kept wishing for a Third-Person View so I could stare at Vin Diesel's shiny head. Splinter Cell and SC2 were also great games.

I also own both the Xbox and a PS2. But for now and to me, the clear winner is the PS2. Although I like nearly all games, I am first and foremost a racing fan, and as a racing fan I like driving with a decent wheel.

This option is not available for Xbox and so the Xbox remains a no-no. Games like Prince of Persia are indeed better on the Xbox, and the internal HDD is a great option.

If you are a racing fan who likes to race online and is not interested in using a decent wheel, then the Xbox isn't bad. Race Driver 2 is far from a perfect game, but it has good tracks and the DTM cars are pretty decent to race with. Online racing allows for far too much cheating, but it works and it's fun. The same goes for PGR2 - here the tracks are ultimately its downfall in my view, because there are no real race tracks - ironically the only open track in the game is the Nurburgring, although it's a slight bit too cartoonish a version for my taste. In some respects, PGR2 is a better game for it's single player, which is very well thought out with all the challenges, kudos, and the showroom which is done very nicely. In the end, though, all Xbox racing games are very accessible, but lack depth. Sega GT Online is almost a GT3 clone and not bad with decent physics, but unfortunately looks outdated and has lousy On-Line support (which could have made it great) and also somewhat disappointing tracks.

If you are a first person shooter fan, on the other hand, you can do a lot worse than getting the Xbox. There is little question about that. If you're a racing fan who isn't looking for too much depth and don't care for wheels, but do like online gaming (which is great fun) you can certainly do worse than getting an Xbox.

But in so many other things, the Xbox has dropped the ball. Many of the games that are available on both platforms are slightly better to play on the Xbox, thanks to it being a newer console with more recent hardware (contrary to what someone said on page 1, the PS2 only has 16mb of memory, as opposed to the Xbox which has 32mb). But thanks to its restrictive online policy, very few of those games on the Xbox actually support online play, and this is where the PS2 wins out. Tons of EA games, but also a great many games from smaller publishers like THUG, can all be played online on the PS2 but not on the Xbox. Slightly smoother gameplay doesn't nearly make up for that, online play really adds a lot to a game and gives it so much more durability. Finally, requiring a credit card for going online is a stumbling block for many also.

Finally, the PS2 has a great many good games that don't appear on the Xbox at all, or only much later. They may be easy to forget about, but games like Jak & Daxter and Ratchett & Clank, Final Fantasy, PES/Winning Eleven, Time Crisis 2 and 3, and so on are superior games to anything the Xbox has to offer in the same genre. While the PS2 does have a lot more crap games, it simply has tons more games in the first place and even the small percentage that isn't crap makes up for a great deal of more and more varied class titles that the Xbox just can't match. Also its compatibility with not only old PSX games, but also hardware, and it's two USB connections (easily surpassing the use for four controller connectors of the Xbox) allowing for easy attachment of PC keyboards and mice are a great bonus. Even in the graphics department the Xbox isn't always superior - the GeForce3 hardware has a pixel anti-alias that cannot be turned off and that makes it impossible for the graphics to really shine like some of the PS2 games can make them. Granted, they kill the jaggies that sometimes turn up in PS2 games, but there's no option to turn it off and find another way to get around the issue, like PD has with GT, and I'll wager that however good and detailed the graphics of an Xbox game may get, no game will ever be able to equal Gran Turismo's realism in terms of how cars reflect and shine.

Xbox has made a lot of unnecessary mistakes in its past, and it's almost surprising it's doing as well as its doing in spite of itself. But by focussing on FPS games it has successfully targeted a very specific audience among the PC gaming community, where FPS games are the leading genre, and this audience is more comfortable with the Xbox partly because of it's familiarity to the PC, minus the constant need for upgrading.

Should they be able to include FFB in future racing games, make online gaming accessible for non credit-card owners, and treat third party developers with more respect (so that they will support online play), then I think the Xbox will continue to grow as a viable competitor of the PS2. But for now, they are needlessly keeping themselves back.

Well heres what I do, ps2 for Virtua fighter 4 evo and Gt4, xbox for everything else. With the amount of hours I clock up on Vf4 though....truly sad.

Arwin, some of you points I'd say were pretty valid, others I'd say were utter crap. Another person pretending software graphics are better then hardware, just stop it! lol. PD had to waste resources finding a way around problems, while with the xboxs 3d chip set, you just do it in hardware, thus faster and easier for everyone. Don't tell me that's not better.

Gt's cars look as good as they do because of PD's skill, it's hardly because the PS2 can do some kind of uber car shine other consoles and pcs can't do :P

That disconnect is nice I agree. I absolutely hate the headsets. I like the design and the volume control right on the control but I dont like how they cut into my ears. Mabey I just have a weird head but I find them uncomfortable.
I will be renting Kotor and Ninja Gaiden tonight if they are in.

Arwin, you make some good points. Some things didn't make sense, but you've got your head on straight, so respect is due. You also aren't aware that EA makes live enabled titles now. I really hate EA (except burnout 3, damn them!) so it doesn't matter much to me. I agree with code_kev about the "graphics through software" shenanigans though.

Oh yeah... I can't believe I forgot about Winnin Eleven in my PS2 summary! I am truly ashamed.

And some more words for John, I may have been a little short, but I'm not "hating" on you. You posted junk and I called it. I can have an opinion also, can't I?

The headsets are crap IMO, not by design, but by construction. A stupid little plastic tab broke on mine, rendering the whole unit useless.

Notice something, like it was mentioned above, it's Live enabled.

There is not better.

If you want the full experience, you got to have both, which i do.

Right now i'm playing GT3, because i recently purchased a PS2(my brother had a ps2, but i moved out on my own earlier this year).

Being biased and saying that "The Box" sux blah blah is just plain stupid. You hate Microsoft, ok, but don't say that the box sux. It's freakin' awesome, unlike back when it was released, this thing has tons of games now, better graphics, and Live>PS2 Online.

Yes you have to pay for Live, but it's like $6 a month, if you can't afford that, you must be in H.S. or below. But anyways with Live, you can actually meet play games against other ppl, get to know them a bit, add them to your friends list and play with them at a later time. With PS2 online, it's wham bam thank you ma'am. Which don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that, but with live you feel more like a community and it makes the MP that much more fun.

As for the controler issure, the new smaller version is great. I will admit, the old skewl controler was HORRIBLE, and I am glad they made the new, petite one.

Also about the whole it's a pc, arguement. Yeah it's a "PC" that only costs $150.

Yeah the headset is kind of cheap, my g/f broke mine on accident, oh well, not like it's hard to replace it.

I bought a PS2 for two simple reasons, GT4 and GTA:SA. I'm impatient, i can't wait that long for GTA to come out on the Xbox.

On a side note, i got my Xbox for free, it was a Christmas present from my g/f.

I just recently tried a couple more games for the x-box that I liked. Riddick was a pretty good game. I also tried Unreal Championship which was a LOT of fun online. Up to 16 people. And you can talk thru the headset the entire time. I cant wait till Doom and Halo 2 comes out for the X-box.

@code_kev: that's exactly what I'm saying. That because this pixel blur is always on, games on Xbox cannot achieve the same effect. The very same criticism was leveled at the GeForce3, and that was wisely corrected in the GeForce4 chipset.

@kinigit: I watched Microsoft's E3 presentation this year so I'm certainly aware of this. But there are tens of online enabled games already out there on the PS2, and on the Xbox EA is starting only just now. That's what I was referring to, and the long EA/Microsoft negotiation was a good example of MS's arrogance towards third party developers.

Feel free to point out anything else that doesn't make sense. :) And keep the game titles coming. I'll certainly be trying one or two out. I might go for Doom3 sometime, see if the suspense is really up to Resident Evil's standards, if the port to Xbox turned out good, and if the co-op play adds something or not. I've steered clear of fps games because I had an overdose in the days of Quake and Descent, which I then already played in LAN. ;)

And dammit MS, next time put in USB ports and keyboard/mouse support. ;) Guess they were just too worried that people wouldn't believe it was a console, and not a PC in a box. :D

Even with the pixel blur, the games look better in general, simple case of more power. Games like Ninja Gaiden (with it's god smacking bosses), Riddick, RSC2, doom 3, halo 2, otogi, doa3 etc should make this very clear. OFC I think the ps2 has some stunning games, games like ico blew my mind (stunning locations, amazing animations etc), but but even at moderate distances you can see how low res textures are, something evident in most PS2 games, heck, even on GT4:P you can see pixelisation on the textures on some of the cars (it's very evident on the crowds, and buildings). The pixel blur may be a pain the arse, but the added oompth, and the nice crispness of the graphics, I think, more then makes up for one short coming, i have yet to see a game on the ps2 that can match NG for graphic quality, hell I've yet to see another game on the xbox to match it! Anyways, as they say, graphics maketh not the game, but that's my opinion anyway, I'm sure you could say some ps2 games look better to you, and that's fine, but we would both know that this was from an artistic stand point and not a technical one.

BTW with doom 3, probs best off getting it on the pc

If MS add some usbs, sony can add 4 joy pad ports ;)

I have been trying to rent Ninja Gaiden for over a week now and they never have it in. I just found out that my girlfriends brother in law wants his X-box back in about a month so more than likely I will end up buying one. I will just try to find as many games as possible for it so yeah keep the titles coming.
Ive never tried the sports games online besides golf but I think I will try it sometime to see how it is.

well, John i think the reasons you listed in your first post were pretty lame. Not very good reasons at all. But whatever.

And to those saying the XBox has crappy graphics..... you can't be serious....Maybe you should play more than 1 game to judge a system... Does anyone remember Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions when that came out on XBox, the graphics blew my mind. The lighting effects in that game were amazing. But, i also just played Burnout3 at BestBuy the other day, and wow, some good graphics! oh, yeah that was PS2. And, hardware/feature wise, you get way more for your money with an XBox. I own both, because you have to in order not to miss out on all the great games. Now, i haven't played either in over a month because of SWG, but the last console game i was actively playing was Knights of the Old Republic for Xbox, and that was a really really fun game. I'm waiting on Halo2, GT4, GTA:SA, and the next Armored Core before i pick up the controllers again.

I agree that generally the Xbox graphics look better, though also because of the often better framerate. The GameCube however also often can produce clearer, better contrast graphics. Anyway, I am well aware I was only talking about a very specific specialistic problem with the Xbox graphics hardware and a very specific instance where it allowed the PS2 to literally outshine the Xbox. ;)

One thing I really dislike about Ninja Gaiden in terms of graphics is that with the v-sync turned off (which is obviously what the game has done to increase speed), when the background has to move quickly it gets split in two halves that appear to get drawn separately (because the screen is redrawn by the TV out of sync with the graphics hardware). Let's not forget that it doesn't look all that much better than a game like Dynasty Warriors IV, even if Ninja Gaiden is clearly a better game - depending of course on taste, but I'd say generally people like Ninja Gaiden better - faster, less repetitive gameplay.

As far as the 4 controller inputs go, I find the USB ports more useful. Every bit of hardware I buy, wheel, gun, camera, printer, digicam, keyboard, mouse, etc. can be connected to both the PC and the PS2. Heck I can even connect the PS2 to the PC thanks to this. :) Very few people need more than 2 regular controller ports anyway, and even then there's the option to get a multitap, after which you have five (I got one of those), and you can use old PSX controllers as well, good stuff.

I say if MS has to choose between four controller ports and 2 controller / 2 USB, go for the latter. Even better, go for one controller port and make the plugs on the controller link-through, so you can just plug in as many as you want. :D

I think what I personally like best about the Xbox may well be the harddrive. Not worrying about memory card space and having the right one in is very pleasant. I look forward to having that on the PS2. Also, the integrated Live functions are pretty good - seeing what games your friends are playing and having one account to fit all games really works well. That said, they owe us some extra service for the extra cash we need to fork up ... ;)

Oh, and the sound of the Xbox is great too, the inclusion of hardware support for 5.1 was a good thing. Too bad I had to buy an extra cable to actually get a digital out 👎, a port which my PS2 has standard.

As far as PC's go, I hope to one day have the time to fix up my AMD XP 1800+ PC with 256mb and Radeon 9600 Pro and Audigy 2 so that it doesn't crash with just about every game, but I'm not holding my hopes up, it's not going to run Doom 3 all that well then anyway, and it's clear that spending time and money on upgrading and tweaking my PC for games is one part of PC gaming I no longer enjoy. ;) (I certainly used to)

At least Doom3 will run its best on the Xbox, without me having to do anything more than insert the DVD.

i think the answer is simple, give a console 6 usb ports on the front :D

I never noticed any problems with NGs backgrounds my self, and I zipped about everywhere lol. Everything looked very very solid for myself. And those bosses...wow, the bone dragon looked incredible for a game. Hmm might start playing it again :D

"Let's not forget that it doesn't look all that much better than a game like Dynasty Warriors IV, even if Ninja Gaiden is clearly a better game - depending of course on taste"

or a matter of visual impairment. haha.

Seriously, I own DW4 and it's a great game, but one of the least exciting aspects of it is graphics. I like the style too, the graphics just aren't there. Blocky polygon models swathed with low res textures and noticeable pop-up.

Whereas NG has astoundingly detailed models, much, much better animation, fantastic lighting and texturing that makes you go wow. Ooooh I almost forgot; spurty blood (courtesy of the awesome particle effects system).

I was quite frustrated last night while playing Unreal Championship. I was online and I was 15 points ahead of everyone else then all of a sudden something glitched and the bullets and all my weapons were just shooting right thru people and walls. I couldnt kill any more people. And when I respawned I didnt have any guns for at least 5 seconds, and by that time your dead again. This has happened almost every time I played this game online at least one point or another in this game. At first I thought it was a 1 time glitch or LAG but last night was frustrating especially when your winning then somethign like that happens and you end up loosing.
Any ideas why this happens? Old game? Bad connection? I never had anything like that happen on the PS2 before when I was online.

kinigittSeriously
Are you talking about DW4: Empires? And do you have a PAL or NTSC Xbox? I don't think I've seen the game yet on 60hz mode so that might help. I'll ask my colleague if I can borrow the game for a short while.

NTSC (Canada). The title I own is simply called Dynasty Warriors 4, for xbox.

It is a decent looking game on it's own, but compared to the likes of any team ninja offering it really pales, as most games do. Of course, I'm not speaking about the style, as some may find Ninja Gaiden's art style flat (I personally prefer Otogi's more authentic mythical Japanese style), but simply how good the graphics are.

TV's don't change polygon counts, alter blurry textures, reduce clipping, or help get rid of pop-up. They can simply change the resolution and maybe screw with the framerate at worst.

Some screens for comparison:

Ninja gaiden

dynasty warriors 4 (xbox)

Dynasty Warriors Empires (ps2)
