Configuring which programs run at startup?

Hi

I've decided to get my old desktop running, and it goes painully slowly due to the ammount of programs that run at the startup. So, i was trying to figure out how to configure which programs run at startup. I know there's a way of doing it - i had to do it on my old laptop with the help of pcworld over the phone. I remember booting in safe mode, and that's about it.

So can anyone help me? I'm running Windows XP home sp2 if that helps.

Start > Run > type in msconfig and press enter.

Go to the start up tab and untick things you don't need or want. When you restart, you'll get a warning telling you that you are using a selective startup, which you just OK.
 
You might also want to look at services.msc and tweak your background processes through that. Be careful though, you can kill some extremely sensitive background processes such as the RPC if you're not careful.

AFAIK you can only do that on Professional or Corp editions, not Home. Most users will have Home edition (of XP anyway), since most computer deals come with either XP Home installed or Home as the only OS choice. Only people who've bought Pro separately or have acquired Pro or Corp by some other means (ahem or getting it free through a place of learning), will be able to do this.
 
Thanks everyone, but i've managed to get it running fast enough for me. The poblem was messenger, mcafee, yahoo, jmessenger, skype, windowblinds, object bar, object dock, and various other stuff opening at starup. I don't even need them on there - i need to take the pc somewhere to show a movie. Thanks for all the help anyway!
