On winning the Ryder Cup again, this time on US soil. Most of us thought Europe would retain it with a 14-14 score, or possibly a narrow win - given the US's classical strength in the twosomes, but the US team managed only 2.5 points out of a possible 12 on the final day.

The final score was 18.5 to 9.5, which is bloody good considering the US team fielded the number 2 and 3 ranked players in the world.

See you in 2006...! :D

Hurrah! Damn we're good. Look forward to kicking American arse again in two years' time.

Is this about Golf?

I assume so.

I don't realy watch golf though, or have much intrest in the sport. But I suck, so there.

But yay we beat the Americans! (At a game of golf, to make it clear) Congratulations to us.

Hello? Ryder Cup? The Ryder Cup?

Golf tournament. US vs Europe. Started in 1937, played every two years, except 2001's was delayed to 2002 because of fears around 9/11? Matchplay, consisting of foursomes on the first day (8 matches), fourballs on the second (8 matches) and twosomes on the last (12 matches)?

Finished yesterday, with an 18.5 to 9.5 win for Europe?

Any of this ringing any bells?

Yay for Europe.

What was it we won again?

(Again being the operative word) :D

Haha! I'm also more than a little surprised not many people recognize the Ryder Cup, Famine! Many congratulations are deserved for the Europeans, the Americans looked like a joke out there. You guys came out with a strong game and really played like a team, definitely earning the cup.

I'm no big fan of golf myself, but the Ryder Cup is different. I find it odd that Tiger Woods - and for that matter Phil Mickelson - don't really perform in the foursomes and fourballs of Ryder Cup golf.

For reference of everyone:
Matchplay golf - Each hole is worth an imaginary point. Players start off with zero. If you win the hole against your opponent - even by 78 strokes - you get a positive point. This can either be credited to you, if you're ahead or the scores are tied, or taken off your opponent, if he's ahead. If you and your opponent make an equal score - be it a hole in one or a quadruple-bogey 9 - you half the hole and no-one gets any points. You play until either the round has finished or one player can no longer win. The earliest possible victory in Matchplay golf is "10 & 8" - that is 10 holes up with 8 left to play. If both players are equal at the end of the round, the match is halved.

Fourballs - Four players - two from each team. Each player plays a matchplay hole. The winner of the hole is credited to the team, as above.

Foursomes - Four players - two from each team. All four play a tee shot. Each team picks the best one and the players take it in turns to play their team's ball. The winner of the hole is credited to the team, as above.

Twosomes - One vs one matchplay golf.

So what you're saying is, it's a bunch of old wrinkly men playing with eachothers' balls? I mean, wacking them? Or ... well you know what I'm getting at.

I wouldn't refer to Tiger Woods as wrinkly, Luke Donald as old or Colin Montgomerie as a man...

Golf? Bah!

Wake me when you beat us at a real man's sport, like basketball................ooops.

Or a REAL real man sport, like sailing.

No, give back the America's Cup! It's OUR'S!

EDIT: scratch that - it's New Zealand that took it away this time. thought it was a European country.

We won it, we defended it and last year gave it away. Our second defence was a complete disgrace and our boat was as strong as toothpicks and took on water faster than a white man after eating some hot curry.

The Swiss team, Team Alinghi currently hold the cup.

This is ludicrous. Why is America so consistently ****ty in the Ryder Cup? They obviously have better individual players.

Congrats, European players. You obviously care more about this than the American players.

I'd like to see Golf become an Olympic sport in some form.

bah! golf is sooooooo boring to watch...how about a real sport....like Hockey,
why no one congratulating Canada on wining the world cup.....eh?

Golf isn't boring. I went to Wentworth this year and it was excellent. My bro and i got free passes because he's mates with one of the caddies. Had a great time.

Always nice to hear Europe winning stuff, especially when it involves golf and America :D

I watched it and was again (following on from the Belfry), how Europe's players outplay their big name American counterparts, with apparent ease. Mickelson should be ashamed of himself, as should Toms and Woods. Top players my posterier.

I grew a new respect for Love III though. I thought he showed great sportsmanship when Clarke gained two shots in the last two holes 👍

Yes. Hockey IS a real sport. Not like that crap you have to play with skates and armour-plating.

Start your own thread. Then there will be someone congratulating Canada on winning the World Cup.

I would like to say congratulations to the European team for beating the American (*cough* amateurs *cough*) hands down! :)

And also to the only Scot in the European team, Colin Montgomerie. Since he's been through a hard time recently I'm happy that he helped us to victory. Oh and he's slimmed down a good bit from all that stress. Still a fat boy though!
