I'm having a spot of bother connecting my PS3 to the web. I've plugged everything in, but when I've doing the test, it detects my network ok but fails on the internet connection test. I'm running it through the same router as my XB360, though they're not both on at the same time (I only have 1 TV in the room). I'm with Virgin Media, I don't know if anyone knows anything that could help me or if anyone could tell me step by step how to set it up, from switching the router on.

Do I need to re-setup the internet on my PC?

It's wired, I'm getting an error message "An error occured while resolving the name with the server 80710102".

Sorry to hear your having problems with your connection. Are you wired or wireless?

Ive never set up a wired connection before, but I could do a step by step guide on getting connected with wireless.

Sorry dude I didn't have any problems and don't know how to fix that sort of thing. All the computers and consoles I have ever had have plugged right into the router and was online. Maybe you have a firewall on or something.

edit: Actually, now that I think of it, for playing NHL 2K7 I had to open port 13something something, maybe try searching around for some better answers.

I think it has to do with my DNS servers or something like that, that seems to be to root cause of most peoples problems with this error. How do I find out what my routers DNS settings are?

I still haven't got my PS3 online, I'm still no closer to knowing what the problem is. I have a wired network through a Virgin Media cable modem running through a MENTOR router that connects my PC, XB360 and hopefully my PS3. I've tried changing the DNS settings to match my PC's, I don't know if I'm matching my routers or not becuase I don't know how to check and a google search provides suprosingly vague answers. I just can't find anytihng online that is helping me with my problem. I've seen people wit the same error code as mine, but the solution they're given doesn't work for me. It's always DNS solutions but I have no idea how I'm supposed to know what I'd need to change the DNS settings on my PS3 to. I've also heared some routers might not be compatible, does anyone know of a list what is and isn't?

I also have no idea how to open ports, honeslty, I'm a complete novice when it comes to networking. I struggle to follow the Broadband setup instructions for my PC. Me and networking just never seem to work without a big struggle in between.

To go online when I used to go online on my PS2 and still on my PS3 I have to completely restart my modem by unplugging it from the electrical socket, if not it'll never connect and have a DNS error. Try unplugging your modem before each time you go online. Hopefully that might help.

Sadly not, that was one of the first things I tried. I have heared some routers are the problem, but I don't want to just buy a new router without knowing if that is my problem. The 360 by comparison was a breeze to connect, and for that I needed to buy the router in the first place.

It would appear to be the router that is the problem, I can get it online if I connect the modem directly to the PS3, but not through the router.
