So the ultimate Bentley is no longer alone in it's segment. Rolls-Royce has finally unveiled the production version of the 100EX concept, although, it is a bit more realistic...

LLN.com
BMW's Rolls-Royce division will use the Detroit auto show to launch its latest ultra-luxury product: the Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe. The two-door convertible will cost around $350,000, and is essentially a production version of the popular 100EX concept.

A 6.8-liter V12 was sourced from the Phantom sedan, rather than the 9.0 liter V16 used in the concept. Rear-hinged "suicide" doors and a chrome hood made it to production, however.

Zero to 60 mph will take around 5.5 seconds — impressive for a vehicle weighing 5,800 lbs. Top speed is limited to 130 mph.

...Me? Well, I think I like the Bentley better. It isn't that the Rolls doesn't look good or doesn't perform well, it just seems far more German than it should. However, neither are the ultimate drop-top large convertibles. That honor may end up going to the long-rumored drop-top S-class, or if they end up doing a drop-top CL. Twin-Turbo V12, who loves ya baby!

And you know what, the moment I saw these pics I instantly thought of that new Mercedes Open drive concept.

It is far, far far better styled than the Phantom is.

This doesn't compete with the Continental GT-C. It competes with the Azure (which is also better, in my opinion, anyways).

lol what a slow car, boy racers will be baiting whoever drives this to race em 24/7

I';; have a bentley, and whilst were on the Continental GTC Anton ferdinand overtook me today in his at canary wharf. He managed to run a redlight at the same time.

A 6.8L V-12 with a top speed of 130? No thank you

Right, and 5.5 seconds to 60 is slow.

On the motorway doing over 100mph and the roller will be done for
Volvos and ladas will be overtaking that thing

You shouldn't be doing over 100mph in the first place, let alone 130mph. Anyone that goes that fast on a restricted road is an idiot. This car isn't about top speed, it's about being driven around in luxury, you don't see people hammering Rolls' around tracks because they are the exact opposite of a track car. The bottom line is this goes nearly 50mph faster than the highest restricted speed roads in the world, that's what matters. I don't care if my next car can only do 110mph, I'll never take it to 110mph. So if by some miracle I was suddenly super rich, and suddenly lost all concept of monetary value and decided to spend an obscene ammount on one of these, why would it bother me that Mr Hot Head has a Subaru that can do 155mph, when my car is still 100 times better in every other way. As though 130mph itself is slow. Some people act really stupid when it comes to these things, like top speed actually matters 90% of the time.

You never do over 100MPH on the motorway L4S? I do it quite alot, and down my neck of the woods its common to do so when possible. You are right though, but I cant see footballers agreeing.

No, and not because the police seem to setup camera traps almost every half mile up here either, but because imo it is stupid. There's far too many unpradictable drivers on our roads and motorways, the ammount of times I've seen people changing lanes without indicating in heavy traffic at 80mph is astonishing. I don't always stick to the speed limit, I'm no super saint behind the wheel of a car but there are certain things that I categorically class as stupid and unessesary and thoes are things I never do. Incidentally, 100mph+ is the speed you can get automatically banned for. On a motorway I tend to follow the flow of traffic, which has never once in my life of driving been as high as 100mph let a lone 130mph which I'm pretty sure is not a common thing even near London. I've seen people driving 100mph and more, but I've never been driving on a motorway when that's been the speed of the flow of traffic which is usally about 80mph give or take 5mph.

Because your rich friends at then country club have cars that are arguably as good, but go 38 MPH faster. It doesn't have to make sense, as the super rich are eccentric. They want the best in every definition. Not "the best in pretty much everything."

Maybe its just us south london and essex boy racers lol. In france most people give their cars a right good welly on the accelerator pedal though, but then againt their motorways are really smooth and hardly any speed cameras!

You can't have sometihng that's the best at everything and most people rich and poor know that. Nnd no, if you think most super rich people buy a Rolls Royce and are overly concerned about it's top speed, you are mistaken. Some rich people will buy a Rolly Royce purely based on what it's like to ride in the back. There's a guy down the road from me, owns a Bentley Arnage and has owned it since it was new, he actually drives it himself, he's not a member of the super rich yet. He loves the car, but he's never once talked aobut it's top speed. He's talked about it's power, and acceleration, but if you think for one second he'd be bothered if that car topped out at 120mph you'd be wrong. That car has probably never touched 100mph either.

Explain the Veyron, then.
I'm not saying that they care. I'm not saying that they would choose one over the other based on it, either. I'm definitely not saying they will use it. But it is a form of one-upmanship that is undoubtably there, and it is ridiculous to think that it isn't. Furthermore, I'm sure that someone would find it appealing as a way to be better than someone if they owned a Bentley Arnage, which tops out at 168, as opposed to this, which tops out at 130. They may not use it, notice it or care most of the time.

At my dads work place in canary wharf they are a host of top exotic belonging to celebs, buisness men and footballers, and I think L4S is right what he says about top speed, cause my dad always tells me how these cars never even get driven let alone do 60mph. (actually thats a lie they do get driven, when the ferrari guy come salong to take it away for a service)

Explain the Veyron, then.
It's not the best at everything, it's just the fastest production car in the world, and it happens to be quite luxurious, it's not the most luxurious, it's not the best track car, it's not the best economic car, it's not the best passenger car ect. You cannot have a car that is the best at everything. The Veyron, as good at a lot of things as it is, is only really the best at one.

Thank you l4s, you said everything that I wanted to pretty much. Rollers are about comfort and super supreme luxury. Not blazing down the motorway at 130mph. I prefer this over any Bentley. This to me says class, Rolls says class. That front end with those lights are brilliant.

My approval rating: 85% (not 95%+ because I will NEVER see one much less own one)

Sounds good if you're an old rich guy with hemmorhoids.

Too bad it's uglier than 🤬.

...Well I'm sure some computer whiz-bang kid will figure out a way to take off the limiter, but I'm still confused as to why anyone would want to go faster than 130 MPH in the car. If I recall, the Mercedes S-Class (S550) is restricted to 130 MPH here in America, generally for no apparent reason other than "they can."

Wow, 130mph only outta of a 6.8L V12? That car is gonna get spanked on the Autobhan.

I thought the car was better suited to non-highway use through the country, or maybe a quick jaunt through the city...

I don't think anyone in their right mind would take a full-size convertible out racing on the autobahn...

I knew the 100EX would go into production since July 06, since I got the info about it from one of the PR people.

Yeah. The car is designed to get rappers from their houses to a club. Most of them have never heard of the autobahn, anyway.

What does get me is that the Continental GTC is about $130K less, accelerates faster to 60 MPH (4.7 seconds), and tops out far-higher than the Drophead (scratching at 190+ MPH).

...I think anyone who goes against the Bentley in that situation needs to get their head examined...

And again, I will say that this doesn't compete with the Continental GTC at all. It competes with the Azure.

Ah, but does the RR Phantom (upon which this car is based) not compare directly to the Continental Flying Spur? I think that qualifies the car for some comparisons...

...But even then, the Azure even seems like a better idea...

Ah, but does the RR Phantom (upon which this car is based) not compare directly to the Continental Flying Spur?
Actually, no. The Phantom competes with the Bentley Arnage, which was out long before the Flying Spur was. The Flying Spur and Phantom are in a completely different price range, with the Arnage T being the Phantom's main competitor for price.
