Control Your Computer With Your Brain?

"Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems, a company based in Foxborough, MA, has developed software to enable quadriplegics to use computers as well as any enable-bodied person. The hardware, called BrainGate, requires a silicon chip to be placed on the motor functions of the brain that control arms and legs, and a hole to be drilled in to the skull to allow a plug to interface with the chip and computer.

Available on normal desktop computers, this hardware will allow quadriplegics to surf the 'Net, write e-mails, and even play video games as well as the next person, and all by simply thinking the action.

The beginning of The Matrix, or just the greatest step in technology ever conceived? Either way, the future is here."

"Scary"... is the only word that comes to mind right now. :boggled:

...so if your mind is controlling it, what's to stop it from opening up pr0n sites in the middle of class or something?

^^ Good point.

It's interesting (and I don't doubt that in a hundred years it could be something that everybody does), but they've got to make it so that your head doesn't need to be drilled. That's just too barbaric.

But I think I'd want a hole drilled in my head if I ever became a quadraplegic so I could use a computer again. Not just because computers are fun, but think of how it would help in the real world. Tons of jobs require use of a computer, so that's the first real benefit I can see from this.

Its been done before to an extent... they've been able to train people to move a mouse cursor with their mind I believe, but that's about it...

And you guys KNOW that the opening-of-pr0n-sites-at-inopportune-times problem would be a real issue... I mean you're not thinking about verbs and nouns and semicolons in English... you're not thinking about cube roots and imaginary numbers in math class... and you're not really thinking about that expense report your boss wants you to have on his desk in the next half hour... nooo, you're sitting there thinking "mmmmmm.... boooooobieeeeeessss"

That's a step in the right direction.

What I am still really waiting for, though, is the day when we will be able to download any kind of information (a la Johnny Mnemonic) into our brain 👍

No more schools, Highschools, Colleges, or Universities.

From complete idiot to Doctor's degree in 20 minutes :D

Now that would be awesome :sly:

The Wizard.

Yes, that too. But the movie I was referring to was Johnny Mnemonic, also with Keanu Reeves.

If you have never seen it, I advice you to do so. It's quite good, and gives you an exact idea of what I am talking about 👍

I already control my computer with my mind. It just has a few more stages to it. :P

Freaky shizzle. Aslong as it doesn't become normal for us to be conneted to everything, eg cars, guns etc.

Driving along, "I hate that guy so much I could just run him over" *boom* *bang* *squidge* "Oops."

sprite
dose that come with force feedback for games. :)
Now THAT would be something that I would love to see. Quite an incentive not to die in the game, eh?

check this out, it's an actual video of a guy using it

that's pretty insane, one can only imagine where this technology will be in 5, 10, 25 years? i'd guess it would be developed to be less invasive, more precise, and eventually cheap enough for everyone

maybe one day you'll buy a videogame console, and it will be a headset only, that uses small high-capacity memory chips for storage, and feeds you stimulus and gets your response directly from your brain. just you sitting on the couch motionless, driving around nurburgring :)
