If I do a full system copy of my XMB inc all users onto a external HDD. Can this be reloaded onto another [new PS3] or only the machine it came from. Also the copy was done on main account will sub accounts work on new PS3 or even the old PS3.

Many thanks.

I think most of the data makes it through. Stuff like your music, videos and pics will all transfer over, save files as well, game data I'm not sure. You might need to reinstall/redownload some games.

For that matter I've often wondered what happens if you take the HDD out of your old PS3 and just slide it into your new one. I might have to upgrade to a slim model next year, my old chubby 80GB is showing some signs of aging.

Changing your HDD wouldn't help, it'll just format when you install it into another ps3, the only thing I suggest is deactivate all accounts, copy game saves onto memory stick or external HDD then recopy it onto your new ps3 then reactivate all account then redownload

Doesn't work at all. When I put the 320GB HDD I had in my 60GB fat which YLOD'd into my brand new 160GB slim it didn't even ask or tell me to format the drive, it just refused to even start up at all. Having said that I tried to change the drives before it had even been powered on once so I suppose that was the cause of that particular error, but each HDD is encoded to only work with the PS3 it was formatted on so swapping them over does not work. The only methods that exist for transferring data from one to another are a system backup (which copies almost everything), individual save file backups onto a USB flash memory or HDD (which can't copy copy-protected saves like Assassin's Creed 2 and many others, backup might be able to copy those) and the Playstation Plus save game cloud backup. I know practically nothing about that beyond the fact that it saves your games on the Internet for you to download if you lose them or get a new PS3.
