I am looking for a hosting packages & website design services that offers the following.

1) It must be setup so that payments can be taken throught the website
2) It must have a system of creating memberships & accounts.
3) Different members must be able to send Personal messages to eachother.
4) Members must be able to upload pictures & text into there account. (For example, imagine it is a car advertising site, members would be able to upload pictures of there car & text.
5) I also need a company that can design the site & maintain without me having to worry about it.

I have obviously looked through Google at the different companies but I wanted opinions from different people & what to look out for when choosing a company.

If anyone has suggestions on a suitable, reputable company, please feel free to post them.

If you need more info, just let me know.

Avoid any and all contact with www.hostexcellence.com and www.affinity.com (they have a few other sites under their overall name).

Hostexcellence, hosts my old company and my wifes current site. Both have "misplaced" emails that they send. Apparently, hostexcellence.com has occasionally made the spamcop list and many of the big (and a more than a few small) providers block the email coming from hostexcellence.com

I hosted my current site on hostsave.com for about 2 months. They tried to hold my website name hostage when I tried to leave. I had an email success rate from them of about 2 in 10. Hostsave.com is part of affinity.com. they were on the spamcop list, and used an ancient version of Php (with many published security holes) which provided anyone with access to others webpages, and the ability to exploit webnames for spam.

I'd move my wifes site, but we paid for a year in advance. :(

Good luck in your search. I'm interested to hear how it goes (and especially prices involved).

Thanks for the advice, I'll make a note of those companies. I'm also in the process of getting quotes for magazine advertising. I'm actually doing this on behalf of a client, so at the end I'll make a summary of all the costs involved in setting the company up.

Hard to say without outlining the exact requirements. But all of the above will run into thousands of pounds.

I'll try and get a copy of the business plan for you. It does go into a lot more detail. I think my client has budgeted £10,000 outlay for the website.

Don't get hung up on using the same company for design as well as hosting. The larger hosting companies offer better deals and reliability, but a smaller design house will give you more personal service.

For the hosting, try 1&1 Internet. They're very very good, and provide the features you need for about £17/month.

Thanks for the advice, I have noticed that the design companies seem to be cheaper if that is all they specialise in. I have seen 1 & 1 and I think they have the best prices by far. I'm just gathering details about 10 companies at the moment so I can compare them.

I use godaddy.com for hosting. They're dirt cheap and seem to be quite reliable (no downtime to my knowledge in the past 4 or 5 months I've used 'em
