They should make a 'vette with some of those rotating headlights.. you know, they look like pop-ups, but rotate all the way around to look like regular headlights... imo it isn't as much character as real popups, but better than regular headlights.

Like the Porsche 928?

DO NOT WANT!

Slightly OT: I'm hoping that the new Camaro brings back the hidden lamps like its predecessor had. My guess is that it won't happen, but damn it would be cool to have these back:

On an XJ220, the lights are covered but don't move, and the cover drops down out of the way.

I was just thinking of that! I used to think they slid back and forth, but after a while, I saw they just dropped down. It was still pretty cool and different either way.

Poor aerodynamics? As if that matters on a car primarily used for daily driving, or even the occasional backroad sprint.

Poor safety for pedestrians? Yes, because getting hit by a car with regular headlights is painless.

Higher cost/weight and greater complexity? We're already adding those qualities to modern cars by the bucketful. What does one more gadget matter when entry-level cars currently weigh more than 3000lbs and come with an assortment of electronic gizmos and safety features that luxury cars of decades past couldn't even dream of?

I actually think the pop-up headlights give a car character. Some of my favorite cars had pop-ups.
QFT.

exactly when they are adding random easily breakable things to cars you would think that something added to a car, who's life expectancy is about 5 year, that lasts 5-10 years would be easily done.

That made me think of a hilarious joke at the expense of the Mitsu 3000GT, and namely its first redesign.

That they bothered to remove all of the complex mechanical parts (active aerodynamics, flip up headlights, headlight washers, active suspension and tuneable exhaust) to achieve a far less cool automobile that stilled weighed as much as some small houses.

note: he included the flipies in his list of makking the car less cool o.0 but i agree that was possible the stupidest thing they did if they wanted to car to wiegh less they should have done something about the engine or the frame.

There was not a single 3000GT that was anywhere near as cool as the original model with flip-ups was. Except the Stealth, which was far cooler, but that's another story.

Personally, I always thought the caps on both sides of the hood (to cover the tops of the strut mounts?) ruined the original design, and I, for one was glad to see the re-design.

Well I think they changed the headlights to keep up with the times. Flip up light used to be very popular during the 80's & 90's but now, how many cars do you actually see with pop up headlights that are brand new? Not many. Infact I can't think of any car with them from 2000-2007. They have gone out of fashion now.

It was also for other things too... but I'm more intrested in the design aspect. But I do like Corvettes now they have got rid of flip up's was never keen on them.

2000-2002 Pontiac firebirds, had them.

What's a Corvette?

Hah, nah I think it is a pretty good change, keeps it fairly fresh.

i like those flipp up light. RX7 from 91 to 02 looked sexy with them. so did the NSX, old Chargers looked mean with them. a black Corvette C5 or the 02 Firebird Ram Air suits those lights pretty good.

If you are a child of the 80's and didnt lust for a car with popup lights there is clearly something wrong with you.

Mind you they ran out of childrens souls after the 80's anyway.

But yes there is a slight effect on the mileage you get with them up, although it's marginal at best.

Lots of 180/200sx guys have commented that after their mad tyte jdm sil80 conversion their mileage has increased due to getting rid of the weight of the popup housings and mechanisms.
