I would, but:
a) that would have put me behind the pack

More than spinning did? Also it really wouldn't have given doing it right results in you gaining on everyone on exit.

b) it's difficult to 'roll' onto the throttle when the R2 button is your accelerator and you have a sweaty palm.

R2 would make it easy actually. Squeeze, not pull.

Well, if I span, at least it would hold them back a bit! And not really, not when your fingers slip off the R2 switch every so often
