I think (having played most racing "sims") this game is as good as a "sim".
Instead of almost perfect physics and disgusting graphics you get almost perfect graphics with awesome physics.

see my point ?

A funny thing that always strikes me about the iRacing/xFactor snobcrowd is how easily they downplay graphics. Spot-on physics are very important, and I'm sure we all agree to that, but when you're simulating reality, visual fidelity isn't exactly a marginal factor.
A sim can simulate even the effect of specks of dirt on my bodywork, but if my eyes bleed while playing it, I'm not going to feel much immersion, to be honest.

Personally I find GT5 the perfect balance between simulated physics and visual fidelity, and that helps my immersion much more than sims too unbalanced in that area.

I definitely agree with the person who spoke about weather changes, why cant those be in beginner????????? (or anywhere) more?

also, SNOW!!!!! i love driving in snow and we didn't see that in career mode?? I thought your "career" was suppose to be unique and mean something, it was none of those things??

It's strange really, how they can make a perfect simulator with such a bizarre game to go around it. Why am I racing the same events over and over, when there are other either unused or barely used tracks that could have been made into additional events? I mean, I'm in the expert category and I've not even had to make a pitstop once in the game so far? There's been no rain? Actually programming an 'event' is a copy and paste job, just change the entry limits, the venue, number of laps, weather & time, XP and cash rewards, and the AI car list.

The engine for this game is exceptional; tracks, cars, physics, graphics (for cars at least). But the lack of variety in the events is disappointing the more I play; mainly because it would have been a partial solution to this ridiculous 'grinding' we have to do to unlock further events.

I wouldn't say 5/10 game with 10/10 driving, it's probably 7/10 game with 11/10 driving :P

Well said. My expectations for the game were very high, but so far the negatives are out weighing the positives for me. For every moment that I enjoy, something (usually a bizarre choice by PD) always brings the experience crashing back to earth.

Cote d' Azure or Monaco Grand Prix circuit is in the game in arcade and practice mode under city circuits. I have no clue why PD did not put it with the world circuits but what ever. I also do not know why they did not call it Monaco because every one else does.

yep. indy's road course is used 1 time!, cort de is used only twice. sr7 IS NEVER USED. i just dont get it. whats the point of making us the the same TRACKS OVER AND OVER AND OVER, and not using other tracks. make me do 30 laps at london if we have too. make us race them BACKWARDS!! they are in the game, WHY NOT USE THEM. i just don't get it. i am finally old enough to own a sony product and gt5 is my first GT that i actually OWN. and im disappointed with how short the career is, but i love this game and im gonna solider on. its just i cant earn money in practice i can only have fun. which doesnt get me new cars.

Unless you expect that in 2010, with the power of the PS3, that they could model proper damage and rolling physics into the game. One of my main problems with GT5 is that it doesn't really know what it wants to be any more, its a simulator, but only in the areas PD chooses to simulate. The illusion of reality is ripped up when cars bounce around like toys, instead of like a ton of metal and carbon fiber.
I think PD really needs to decide what it wants for the future of GT, peoples expectations have moved on but they seem rooted in the past.

I noticed the mentions of SSR 7 and Cote d'Azure here and agree it is bizzare.

What I find even more bizzare is the Toscana Rally course (used twice, once in the Grand Tour once in Loeb Rally), Chaimonx (used only in Loeb Rally), and the massive Eiger Norwand which is used only in Loeb Rally on the full trail, some of the alternate trails are never used! Instead we have these randomly generated rally tracks for the GT Rally. I don't get it, especially that these tracks are so detailed and huge, they are barely used. Theres also a ton of nice Rally cars in the game that basically have no value because there is nowhere to use them unless you seek out online races or practice. Otherwise once you beat whats there theres no value to them as you can't win money with them or XP afterwards.

Also some events like the VW Lupo cup, or the Gallardo Cup, one race thats it? I mean the Lupo one is a blast and its a long race, but just one?

It feels like they cut parts of the single player campaign out (especially Rally), hopefully they don't add them back and charge us for them later.

THE GAMEPLAY SUCKS.

We all know this. So let's all stop complaining about specific things. This is a 5/10 game and a 10/10 driving sim. As IGN put it.

BEHOLD, the all knowing and wise IGN... Besides I dont see why people use that ign review to bash GT5... 10/10 driving sim sounds pretty good to me, as thats what GT5 set out to be.

I dont know about you but I bought GT5 for the simulation side and the thrill of driving, so did close to 6 million other people.

So what IGN are saying and you, is GT5 is a perfect driving simulator for people that have grown out of burnout... GO BUY IT!

Great review, Thanks :P

IGN may not be the best reviewers in the world but in this case they nailed that part of the review.

The driving part of the game is good, everything that supplements it is poorly designed. That's what's odd, this game has many of the most oddest design decisions i've seen in a many years.

Huge bummer. I loved Cote d' Azure and was looking forward to that for some great pics. I had no idea it wasnt in the career at all.

The fix could be quite simple:

Community Career path's... when you log in online and go to my Community page you should be able to play a Career of races of my choosing, XP could be calculated based upon car level and the AI settings.

I guess the first thing is to make a race creator, where we can choose what cars on what tracks with what weather, tyres, day / night, and any other options we like.

All this should be patched in, seriously we can't wait for GT6 and the PS4 for such basic functionality that I'm sure was promised at some stage.

definitely agree with that

and you can still take pics at the Azure with your cars, just favorite the car and go into arcade and pause replay...

RANDOM EVENT GENERATOR.

How hard is it PD? I love the game but I'm stuck at lvl 23 right now having completed all the events aside from the one I can't do because(thank you PD) there is no way I can get the F1 car.

Have randomly generated events that give you xp and cr. Randomly generate the criteria(trucks, 1970-1979, one make races, ect.) on randomly picked tracks. The longer the race, the more money and credits you get. It's that simple and would turn my gameplay experience as it sits from a drag and grind that makes me detest the game till I unlock the endurance events to something fun and always new.

As above! I want a random event generator if they can't make enough good events which they clearly haven't.

How about El Capitan that was a great track in GT4 it really showcased the level of detail GT stads for and breathtaking views it's tailor made for GT but sadly its not here and some tracks from GT2 like Seattle and another cheerful track at the beggining of carrer mode forgot whats its called.

dude just continue leveling and do the races you can do i mean you get so many different cars and at some point youll have the dough to get the Formula GT but have patience so many people are beyond that point don't get discouraged it's not the end.

Seems to be some confusion here, let me add to that:

1. Cote D'Azur is in GT5, in the Career/GT Mode. I'd have liked it to figure more, but it's in a fairly early event for classic cars (I forget which but can check) as well as the Historic Car Racing Cup.

2. Cote D'Azur is effectively the Monaco GP Circuit, under a different name. I'd always assumed this was some sort of licensing issue, possibly the fact that there is an FIA F1 license which I don't think PD hold, though there are other GP circuits in this and previous games. Something similar seems to have happened with the Ferrari F1 cars though, presumably they are in because Ferrari are in, but there are no F1 events. The GT Formula car & event (or whatever it's called) don't actually mention "Formula One".

3. Although the Cote D'Azur track may have been kinda upscaled from GT4 like the standard cars, as some suggest, it's not the same. Most notably the chicane after the tunnel is more realistic now, is flat with rumble strips (which you can shortcut if your car doesn't totally flip out) whereas in GT4 the chicane was walled off (less realistic but less scope for cheating too). I expect there are other subtle differences too but would need to check.

4. Citta D'Aria and Costa Di Amalfi aren't in GT5, which for me is a great shame as I liked these tracks a lot, but hey I like Cape Ring and the Nurburgring GP circuit too :)

The track/car appearances in the game are outrageously unbalanced for sure. I am shocked that, being well past half of the a-spec events I have yet to race in the rain and I only drove once on SSR5 so far (amateur section, not exactly an exciting race), which I would have considered a signature GT track, at least until now. On the other hand, if I have to race against a Miura on the Rome circuit one more time...

That would just fix completely th whole grind issue. And as pointed out by other people, it probably wouldn't be very hard to code. Wasn't the game supposed to include an event creator of some sort as well ?

This monotonousness is a testament to how I feel about GT5 so far, it is definitely an incredible game with extraordinary content but the little things always end up ruining your experience by making it tedious or frustrating. I still think it's a great game, but the flaws and feel of unfinished product every where reek of wasted potential.

I wonder how flat the GT5's Monaco is. The section at Casino is well known for being very bumpy but in the game it's completely flat. See 0:13 here:

Surface modelling is the thing that many circuits lack and therefore the experience is not as good as Nordschleife for example.

Le Mans is realistically bumpy in GT5 and that was in GT4, well the Mulsanne Straight is, and has some funny cambers.

On a similar note though, I wonder if there would be more of a feeling of undulation (I typed "sense of relief" at first) if the cam stayed "flat" and you saw the car and road kinda going up and down? In chase cam at least. I remember seeing Top Gear where Clarkson compared laps of Laguna Seca in GT4 and "real life" in an NSX, and man that corkscrew section is steep but doesn't feel quite so steep in-game

Spa would be awesome if it made it in and was realistically hilly :)

EDIT: Actually that "fixed" cam idea would look way arcadey and not good at all...hmmm
