Interesting. I notice there are only 3 turns that are listed for 1st gear:

Suzuka hairpin

Monaco Casino hairpin

Montreal turn 10 hairpin.

There are many other tight hairpins where I drop into 1st, for example:

Magny Cours at Adelaide

Nurburgring at Castrol

Turn 1 & 2 at Sepang

Turn 13 & 14 at Istanbul

Turn 1 at Monza

I'm wondering if I should be sticking to 2nd at these corners in order to improve my times? Anyone else care to share their gears?

Uncertain as I've always driven in auto. However it does sound like a good idea that's worth testing. Maybe also try the same corners in auto to see what gears the CPU selects.

I think the point about changing down to 1st is the extra engine braking it gives you, however, having tried a couple of the courses sticking with 2nd, I can say that it allows for smoother cornering: just coasting around the first part of the corner with a more aggressive steering angle & then easing the throttle back in... smoooth.

icelt: I'm a bit surprised you would drive auto - running up & down the (seven!) gears is one of the things that I find most fun about F1:CE.

I always use auto too, I've tried to use manual a few times but it was always a disaster so I always went back to auto. I'll try manual again with GT5P and see if I can master it, but I doubt it , there is just to much to be thinking of going through a corner!

great thread! I love manual in F1, it was such a challenge at first. Going from GTR2 and obviously GT4 where i always used manual, F1 was different, there were more gears to remember, and the functions of each one fascinated me. Now that i have pretty much mastered the gearing, it is as fun as it was on the first lap. I really recommend it to you to get even more out of a great game. As for first gear corners, it really depends on how you have the gears set i think, but there are definately a few where i drop into first i think. When i get my PS3 back, i will have a loooong tour of each lap just to find out!

Like anything in gaming (& in life!) it just takes practice. However, it is difficult to switch when you've become very accustomed to another system. I used to play Forza with a controller using automatic, but when I got my G25, I also started playing GT4 (& then Enthusia) using manual, so I never got used to automatic with the wheel on the PS2.

In F1:CE you have to deal with 7 gears - at first it's easy to get "tangled-up" in the gears when you have to downshift rapidly, but now I know, almost instinctively, what gear I should be in at any given point. One of the most fscinating parts of F1:CE is figuring out exactly how to change down through the gears at critical braking points, matching engine speed to the correct gear to maximize braking force, control & speed through the corner. One thing I have noticed is that it's very difficult to do this without hearing the cue given by the engine noise - I can't imagine playing F1:CE effectively while listening to music!

With regard to 1st gear: if, in fact, the gearing of the course circuit maps is accurate IRL, it still may not reflect what works best in F1:CE. I am finding a number of corners where I definitely still seem to be quicker shifting down to 1st, although I have discovered other corners where coasting through the corner in 2nd seems to work equally well, or possibly better, as it allows a better grip & angle through the turn.

So naturally anytime we got together to play a little split screen we were most concerned about beating the other and talking smack. Trying to learn a manual at that time would have just meant repeated humiliation for that driver. So now I'm so used to the auto tranny crutch I don't know if I could ever go back. But now I'll mull it over some more thanks to the recommendations.

What are the chances that Valencia and Singapore will be in the new F1 2009 game? I'm praying to God that those tracks will be in that season again... must be pretty darn cool to race at night... also Spa better not be left out again like in 2006...

oh i usually do a lot of research, but i just didn't assume the tracks to be confirmed that early! that seems great to me to see those tracks on there...
and hopefully a night race in malaysia too...i almost forgot about abu dhabi...seems like a great track to me already...

Driving Manual it's so much fun. It is like making music with your engine. Hitting the right notes, hearing the engine screams, it is thrilling!
