well i was trying to beat the rx7 race with my fd (course = opera)....i could NEVER get 1st place..closest i ever got was 2nd place a few sec. behind 1st... :guilty:

now that i can sorta drift with the bp falkien rx7..i tried that race again....and beat it on my first try... đź’ˇ

i think it was because of all those 1 gear hairpins that i just easily drifted through
(i didnt catch up to the 1st place AI until the final section with all those turns) :sly:

what other courses are there that drift would stand a chance against grip?

The only reason you won, because the computer is god awfully slow. In a true race, grip will always win.

:( so no matter what course...grip will always win?...theres gotta be atleast ONE course...

It has nothing to do with the course. Drifting is not about speed. Physics dictates that grip will always beat drift. Even if it's by the smallest of margins.

All these people looking to beat grip driving with drift...Does everyone believe that Initial D is real? :dunce:

F1 drivers tend to drive with several degrees of slip angle and schumaker tends to drift into corners so you really need to define your terms.

D3p0, welcome back. Glad to see you haven't lost any of your previous tone.

Anyway, do they drift in every corner that they could? Also, slip angle sin't drifting.

There is not to say that there aren't possible situations where drift is faster than grip. But for an entire lap of any track that I can think of, drift will loose.

yea i agree with swift. an entire track, it will be slower. but on a few handfull of turns drift will be faster around it with certian cars.

Awwwwwwwwe.. don't cry.. Well, you can use a combination of grip and drift to win at Tsukuba on that long last turn you can get pretty sidways and overtake grip cars with the right technique... I remember in the special conditions race, tsukuba wet, I ran my spirit-R RX7 and gave a 787 a beat down... :sly:👍

I think this might be what your takin' about

For pure lap times, grip will always win. Now, for battles and chances to overtake/block opponents, drifting opens up some options.

not all the time in my RX I got a 47.1xx at tsukuba and I use the four wheel drift to get through the last corner super fast faster than any grip car with the same h.p.

That is an isolated corner. Again, it can work for some, but not ALL. That's what I'm saying.

yeah, the real trick is tuning the car to be sticky most of the track but able to break it loose when you want it to.
so long as you're not worried about tyre wear.

Thing about drifting, is if you make one little mistake, you can throw the car in to a spin and never catch the AI. If you grip race through, you can draft the AI (if you get close enough) and just over take at a good point, such as a turn. =) I grip race when against friends or AI, but when I'm alone, I drift! =)

I drift against grip cars and win all the time in arcade mode, its not that hard, the AI is good in this game but not that good.

And everybody was saying:

OMGWTF? YOU'RE A CHEAPASS WANTING TO GRIP RACE A DRIFT ZOMG TEH FIZZICKS SAY TAHT TEH CARZ ARE SLOWER DRIFT LAWLZ

Some people! :indiff:

Basically people tried to murder me in my bed for suggesting that they drift against my R32 Skyline GT-R. :nervous:

lol ok i shouldve made it less vague...i didnt meen PURE drifting like d1...like for about only a handful of turns (about less than 1/3) in a course....heh even in initial d they dont drift every turn like d1 :)

As someone pointed out before, it depends on how you define drift (e.g. do you mean in the style of D1, rear wheels spinning a lot quicker than the fronts, smoke billowing out of the wheelarches and a few armfuls of opposite lock, or do you mean something like a four wheel drift). Back in the day, four wheel drifting was employed by drivers like Stirling Moss as it was quicker than "grip" driving, but four wheel drifting isn't really proper drifting, IMO.

I agree with the majority here though, grip driving is almost always going to be quicker than drift driving, even on an isolated piece of track specially chosen for drifting.

yeah i agree on that :) ...like you said .."almost always" so their are exeptions 👍

Trial Mountain use FC N2 tire and let the AI use N3 tyre hardest you will win.
Trial Mountain use S2000 N3 Tyre let the AI use S1 tyre hardest you will win.

I've tried it and race Drifting "can" beat grip

I CHALLENGE YOU TO A MATCH

My R32 Skyline GT-R versus your FC or S200. One Lap around Trial Mountain. You grip, I drift. Send in a replay or a picture of your time. I will post a replay of my time. :sly:

you're talking about GT4 AI, that proves nothing. We're talking all things being equal.

And captain trips, why don't you finish one challenge before jumping to another one, huh?

because he is scared

i'll be happy to grip race a drifter.

I dont think any 1 course is faster though some corners maybe. Tokyo R246 corner before the last hairpin maybe faster to drift than grip.
