CPU cooler question

I tried asking this somewhere else and it turned into a debate about how I should spend my money. I am looking to upgrade to a new cpu cooler due to my current one not being enough for the overclocking I want to do. I already know what I am going to get depending on the answer I get. I am wondering if I get something like a Cryorig R1 or a Noctua D15/D15 or a Phantek TC14PE and mount a 120MM fan on it, not a 140MM fan with 120MM mounting holes on it, will it cool all of the heatpipes/cool it effectively? I feel like I am overthinking this which I tend to do with a lot of things.
 
Heatsinks come with fans already so why would you take them off and switch them with a different size?

Because I own a pair of Noctua NF12 Industrial 3000PWM fans with the Chromax corners on them, they look amazing and have amazing performance.

Performance, noise, size, or all of the above. :)

In my case I needed a cooler with a specific height to fit my Fractal Design Node 605. Since I wanted to mount it on an i7-4790k (hothead), I replaced the fan with a Noctua that has twice the amount of air displacement (and at a lower amount of noise too).

I know cheap AIO coolers aren't worth your money, its at least 240MM or go home. I was considering getting a Kraken X61 but I don't want to spend that much money on something I am going to replace in about 6 months with a custom loop.

No low profile for me, I want a beefy HSF in my Fractal Define S which can fit any AIO or HSF you can buy. I know for certain I am getting of the ones I mentioned in the OP, most likely the Phantek cooler due to the color of it and it being one of the cheapest with comparable performance to the others.
 
Noctua fans do have a weird color palette but at least it's somewhat remedied with the LTT edition fans. I wished they were available when I bought my cooler.. :(
 
I just found a Coolmaster Nepton 280L for only $75 :eek: I am going to go with that instead of any of the HSF I mentioned above if my current cooler isn't going to do what I want with my new cpu which I doubt it will.

I am overclocking, heavily. My goal is to get my 860K to 5Ghz. I know you are probably going to say isn't cost effective to get a $75+ HSF or AIO cooler, I plan on changing sockets later this year When Zen comes out and will use that cooler on it until I get my custom loop, and that I would need a very good motherboard which I have, its a Gigabyte A88X UP4 which I got for basically $40 brand new.
 
I have my i5 3570K running at 4.3Ghz.

I would just save money for when you upgrade then go with a custom PETG water cooled loop

Saving roughly $10 on a cpu isn't going to help much with a $550ish upgrade for a new cpu, ram, and motherboard and with my custom loop, I honestly don't know when I am going to be able to afford doing it since that is going to cost around $750 if not more to do the exact way I want so saving about $40 to $90 if I sell my current HSF for about $30 isn't going to help much.
