Crap Drag physics

On an episode of "American Muscle Car," there was a segment on the Dodge Viper. During this episode after showing some wonderful GT racing, there was talk about a certain Viper that was called "King Snake," I believe it was. I think it looked a lot like what you'd see a professional drag racing team race, but it was street-legal and put in some wicked ETs.

I don't know who had it or something, but it's kind of rare to see a Viper in drag racing. And I say it's rare in drag racing because the Viper (unlike some muscle cars) made a name for itself on the road courses). Of course, never count out American cars for doing only straights and ovals. But as far as drag racing goes, almost ANY car or truck can be used. Don't just assume that American cars are going to own the strip. Perhaps we can have rather unusual events including drag racing Lotus Elises. Maybe you want to have VW Beetles in action. Maybe you want to put the Toyota Supra to the test. Or (98Cobra, you might like this), you can have your own NMRA (National Mustang Racing Association, if I'm not mistaken)-style event in GT4. And as I said, I don't think GT4's drag physics will be crap. There's drag racing in Japan I've heard of. I don't know if PD would work off of Japanese drags, FIA Drags in Europe, or American drag racing. Whatever it is, I'll perhaps think it will work successfully.

But if I'm not mistaken, wasn't drag racing supposed to be implemented since GT2?
Yes, I would like that JohnBM01 :) . Imagine Pro 5.0 with their 6 second runs. But I think PD will do drag racing perfectly just like they do every part of GT. They are perfectionists and they will make a perfect game and they will make sure every feature it perfect. And if PD does drag racing, you know they are going to do it right. 👍

You gave me an idea John, what if GT4's drag mode have different classes that include for example: super stock, pro stock, and an unlimited class. And in each one you have to use a specific sized tire. :sly: Might be asking for too much, but wouldn't that be nice? We could also have different country classes like a Japanese, American, European, Australian, etc car races to make it even. :)

In terms of an international rivalry, it would be nice to have a Chevy Camaro vs. a Holden Commodore on the strip. Both tuned crazily. And granted that Australia Town features Holden. Should be a good matchup.

Yeah that would be coo too.

since NAWWZ is in the game we should be able to do this.

OH YEAH! 👍

LOonIE
is that true? i hope not...
It is so far, but like somebody suggested, there could be at least one more. Because Infineon raceway has a drag strip in it, apparently.

Tire pressure makes a difference in all tires, slicks or not. I would LOVE to see this be adjustable, but I think we'd be getting a bit too detailed.
Maybe not. The real life Toyota MTRC has real-time adjustable tire pressure. If that feature is in the final release of GT4, then it should be possible to at least statically adjust tire pressure in other cars, too.

Cheers.

ANY car can be a killer on the drag strip. Long ago (easter! hmmmmm... chocolate) i visited Mini's Vs Beetles (other events were held on same day) at York Dragstrip ,UK and saw a VW camper do low 13 ET's as well as an old beetle do 10's. However one of my favorite cars at the event was a Reliant Kitten beat an AC cobra. We should be able to CRAZY with tuning and turn anything into a monster for drag racing to be as true to life as possible.

yeah there should be distinct paths you can take while tuning your car, instead of the universal "buy next stage kit" that has been featured in GT thus far. There are huge differences in the way engines, trannys, suspensions and other components are built and tuned for different motorsports.

They could do a bunch of things with drag racing. Like a "Import" class and V8 class. All racing against their own plug in times... If anyone here has actually done any real drag racing, thats what its like. Sure you can have a car that runs 12's, but if you "break out" (run a faster time than your plugin time) you still loose.

Plus they could do cool stuff like paint your ET on the Windsheild and stuff like that. But you could offer some different variations to drag than circut. for one, any car runs faster on a drag strip than on asfault, outside tempature affects times, elevation affects times (especially with N/A cars)... there is lots to consider.

Yeah, I know what you mean. You could write in your dial-in time so it would be fair against other cars.

Braket racing is what your talking about, and yes it would be cool to have in the game. But, im just hoping for HP or weight classes atleast.

The drag racing portion of the game could be a game in itself. Seriously when you think about it, there are alot of factors in drag racing. I just hope that PD tried to implement as much as possible.
James-

To continue the conversation, how do you prefer to have drag racing done?
A.) Staging and pre-staging, then race off the line
B.) Auto-staging, race begins with the tree aglow
C.) Auto staging, race begins with tree aglow; cannot red light
D.) None of the above (explain your method)

Im totally for "A". There should be no TCS for drag racing and reaction times should at least be optional. Maybe with an option for a auto stage and RT for the pansies out there.

"A" and no traction. I would also like them to show you your reaction time and e.t. I would also like for you to be able to "red light." :)

Im thinking FORZA will be more like that, than GT4.

Saw this picture and.. Is this a dragstrip? Might be old but since about three weeks ago my comp have been everything but ok so its news to me. :p

Edit: Just saw the "Lasvegas_Drag_Strip" in link.. :scared: Maybe should go back to bed..

Can't have proper drag physics without a proper clutch. Takeoffs aren't going to be beautiful in GT4 because of that. ;p

Also, when you go to drag tyres, several deformations of the tyres become paramount to the handling. These are things that i am adamant that GT4 doesn't simulate in enough detail. Nor should it have to unless it was a drag racing game (and you certainly wouldnt waste the processing in other forms of racing).

You've seen the sidewalls of a tyre wrinkle on a big dragster? You've seen the way tyres get 20cm taller when the wheels spin up? Those and footprint ripples make massive differences to the handling, often with strange results, like the car jumping from rear tyre to rear tyre.

GT4 won't have proper drag cars, and it won't have proper drag physics. If you want that, there is NHRA 2. ;)

It will probably have street drag, using somewhat standardish slick compound tyres. I hope they have the staging (shouldn't be beyond their grasp if they can score drift racing!).

Oh, and i hope GT5 goes an extra step further and gives us a clutch pedal, freestanding handbrake, and a h-pattern shifter. Those with the 900 degree wheel = awesomeness. :D

If you notice in that pic. The cars had to start right in the background since the street isw blocked off, adn there are people all across the street. But look right in front of their, there is a stoplight, I wounder if they utilize that as the "tree" to make it almost illegal street racing. Just a thought

Viper Zero
GT4 will suck even more without proper drag racing.

That's just rediculous... The game has always been about GT racing (hence the name)... Drag racing will be a nice addition to GT4, but let's not get too far off track here...

BTW, what exactly would be the point of having more than one drag course?... Different scenery?...

;)

Not to offend drag racing fans, as I joked after seeing the Las Vegas video with the Trial Celica and that Nismo Skyline (is it?)...

"...I guess drag racing cars will have to learn how to turn." -myself, 0?/??/2004

I said this because there are a few little turns with this Las Vegas course. And of course, some like to say that American cars can't do left and right, so that was a bit of a joke. Of course, I'll be sure to take a Mustang or a Camaro to rule Las Vegas. Don't like American cars? That's why there are many alternatives. I don't mind going import-style. I can do a MKIV Toyota Supra and take on its rival, the Nissan Skyline. For you "Fast and Furious" types (not trying to bring up any negative attention), you can get yourself a black Honda S2000 like Johnnny Tran and take on a souped-up VW Golf like at "Race Wars." And as I said, drag racing isn't just for American cars. We emphasize horsepower and 1/4 speeds, but drag racing is for everyone. If you like quick acceleration and high speed, drag racing may just be for you. And not to come up with something else some may like while others may not, but maybe the Test Course can be a nice place to drag race. I don't know about the Metric system all too well, but according to the "Convert Measure" link in my signature, 1/4 mile = 402.336 meters, but we can estimate it to 402m. So it would be suitable to have the tesy course to do away with high speeds. The only thing would be that concrete barriers similar to street courses (without catch fencing) would have to be used so that you can better tell which lane is yours. Also speaking of Las Vegas, not only is it an (let's face it) unusual place to go drag racing, it's pretty scenic with all the lights and stuff. I'm sure the groupies at the casinos and stuff will be watching you and be willing to greet you in the Winner's Circle. But if you're a GT GIRL, well. You'll have to think of some males to accompany you in Winner's Circle. I'm done, your turn!

what i would like to see is like step outs when cars take off like v8 supercars so you dont just floor it as soon as its green to make it interesting
