So I have most parts already in mind.

If I plan on having a good sized Steam library, how big a hard-drive should I aim for? 1.5 Terrabytes?

Could someone link me to a good 24 GB SSD as well, I plan on loading Windows on one.

Even after you install windows the SSD will continue to fill up. I went for a 30gig at first but it filled up within a month or two, even though I was installing stuff on my hard drive. Pako said that even 60 gig isnt enough as he has a similar story. I would go 120 gig minimum.

The same thing is happening to my 120 gig after about 2 years. I haven't put one game, pic, video or anything on it and there is only about 10 gig left. I have no idea what's on it and haven't been able to find much to delete off of it.

I would though agree that 120 would be as small as you should go unless you are really good with computers and managing memory.

Even after just installing windows when I first built the PC it used almost half of my 120 for some reason.

What's the best way to convince the parental units? Good grades of course!

I'll be purchasing the parts to build my computer soon, so far it's looking similar to Sharky's build. (I lied, it's pretty much exactly the same... )

Sometime within this month/next month this build will be complete! I'll keep you all posted on the progress!

That'll be $50 in copycat system tax. :D

Have fun with the build and enjoy the insane performance 👍

So tomorrow is the day I purchase. I went to read reviews on some of the products again, and found that the GIGABYTE Graphics card tends to get Artifacts after around 6 months? I'm a little weary on purchasing it now, and am leaning to an EVGA 2GB 670 FTW.

EDIT: Unless I hear otherwise I'm going to go with the GIGABYTE. It has superior cooling, and most of those reviews were either from serious overclockers (Something that I wont get into just yet) or from back in August when the card was relatively new. Since then they have released multiple BIOS updates fixing these issues. Not to mention most people recommend it, meaning it might just be a bad 1st run. Here's hoping my card is nice and safe! :)

I just bought all the parts!

Setup!

Hopefully this goes well! Should I purchase an electrostatic-wrist watch? Or would the touch of the case every now and then be okay? Should I wear a pair of elastic gloves to keep my finger oils off, or is that not needed either? Sorry for the noob questions...

Grounding yourself is overrated and wearing gloves will serve no other purpose than making you look like a forensic scientist  Exercise care and you'll be fine - just don't go rubbing your hands on carpet before you handle your components :)

*Looks at keyboard*

$4.99 shipping when everything else has free shipping, IKR.

 That shipping! It's horrendous!

Don't worry, many pictures will be taken! Both me and my girlfriend will be working on it, so I can let her be the cameraman while I'm doing some of the stuff with the processor.

Very excited right now! Hopefully I'll be able to get everything built in time for dinner, cause it's looking like I'll have to build it after school. Four hours seems like a good amount of time to get the build done, right? It's only installing drivers and things like that that take up a lot of time?

FTFY.

Why spend 80 bucks on a non-mechanical keyboard? For that kind of money there's all kinds of vastly superior mechanical options. Even something low end like a Razer black widow is $60 and will be so much more satisfying.

As for the build, looks great! I'm going to be building one soon (in April when I get home from university and sell my mac), likely with the same GPU and CPU (on Sharky's advice of course). Seeing everyone building PC's gets me excited to build mine.

Two packages arrived today!

Inside was 20 miles of paper.

Beyond that was this! Now I just gotta wait for the mouse, keyboard, CPU, RAM, and Hard-drives!

I'm using Newegg's YouTube guide to building a PC because it seems very thorough and detailed. Now during the third part he says that when doing your first boot that you should leave the side panels of your case off. What exactly is the reason for this? Why will it not boot if they're on? What time would be good to put the side panels on?

I'm guessing it's to check the motherboard lights if anything goes wrong.

Once windows start you should be ok and close your panel.

Not a 100% sure tho but I always do it like that when I install something new.

Forgot to post this up, but look what came by yesterday!

That's right, it's my Western Digital 1TB HDD! One good thing about being brought down with a cold is that I can get my precious PC parts off the front step when they arrive. On Tuesday my Mouse will arrive, hopefully with my SSD too. Then will come my Keyboard, Processor, and RAM! Then on Saturday I'll get to building, and have all of Spring Break to play!

The mailman brought something shiny to my front door!

It's very nice looking!

Tomorrow I should receive my Mouse, then on Thursday is the rest of the Amazon Order.

Because you may not be done. I run all of my client builds without the side panel in case there was something I missed or didn't see. It helps to be able to just get into the guts a little bit faster by having it off. What if you mess up the front panel connectors(I mess this up on occasion, no MB manufacturer is the same). I also wont do cable management till I know the machine is running so it tends to be a bit messy on the inside when I first start em up. Imagine breaking all the zipties and things you may have made while managing cables just because some part was dead on arrival.

The only thing I tend to not agree with is building the computer outside the case then test running it outside, THEN rebuilding it inside the case. It's a waste of time.

Build threads. Sigh... Every time I look at one I have to spend half an hour telling myself I'm not going to spend £400 on another graphics card, I'm not going to spend £400 on another graphics card, I'm not going to spend £400 on another graphics card, I WANT to spend £400 on another graphics card but really shouldn't. Can't, even. Well, can, but then I'd be in my overdraft and wouldn't get back out for a while. Still, aaaaaaaaah. The sight of those boxes and ESD bags gives me an itch to go and buy some components.

Maybe I'll build that Hackintosh I've been wanting to put together for ages now.

Nothing like that good look of a fresh PCB!

Got my mouse in the mail and boy is it fun! Haven't done much but surf the internet with it but the mouse scroll adjuster really comes in handy switching from the Internet to Minecraft.

The processor, keyboard (Using it now, awesome!), and RAM came today! Awesome! Hoping to get this build started on Saturday!

The keyboard in action!

The brains of the operation!

RAM, with a Vengeance.

Hope you all enjoy! I'll be taking lots of pictures during the build!

Looks awesome! Good luck with the build and post the pictures here!
