This is a bit old, but it looks promising.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit developer Criterion Games is looking for staff to work on an open world racing game.

Given EA's Call of Duty-style strategy to alternate Need for Speed development duties between Criterion and EA Black Box, which is making this November's game, the job ad suggests November 2012's NFS will be an open world game.

It naturally is not a solid confirmation, but when you place it in combination with this bit of news from June....http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-13-ea-criterion-wont-make-a-game-a-year
EA has promised it won't force Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit developer Criterion Games to make a game every year.

Instead, with its Need for Speed franchise EA is employing a two-pronged development strategy, alternating between games made by Guildford-based Criterion and Canadian studio Black Box.

Last November's superb entry in the series was Hot Pursuit. This year's entry is Need for Speed: The Run.

This gives Criterion the time to craft November 2012's entry in the racing series.
...it certainly looks like Criterion may very well be taking their 2nd shot at NFS. Add in Criterion's latest Burnout being a Download-only & it looks to be a recipe for greatness after Hot Pursuit's successful return to classic NFS gameplay.

Of course, with Criterion stating that Burnout is far from dead, there is always that possibility.

Well seeing as the last Hot Pursuit was the greatest thing with NFS written on it to come out of EA in years its really not surprising. It could possibly be another Hot Pursuit title but with a more open world focus but in any case they are the best people for a job.

If they keep doing good need for speed titles EA might buy Criterion and make them in house... I shudder at such a prospect!

Robin.

If it has to be another Hot Pursuit title, I'd rather it be more like Hot Pursuit 1 and 2. Those games are incredible, just with open world in it.

If it's not, it shouldn't be another Burnout. Remember, I go to Burnout to play Burnout, and NFS to play NFS.

Criterion is already a subsidiary of EA & works in the same building as another EA developer. But, as one of the links said, EA doesn't want to make Criterion lose their creativity & with that, they share little interaction with the other developer in their building.

Well its good EA are taking that approach because they have a bad track record of running perfectly good studios into the ground once taking them under the brand. A creatively free Criterion is a good Criterion.

Maybe one day we will see a Burnout Paradise sequel, Burnout crash looks like the biggest pile of junk is history, what a let down to the franchise (even though its a PSN/XBL game).

Anything made by Criterion = insta-buy. HP was a ton of fun, enjoyed it a lot more than Shift 1 & 2 in particular.

That said, a Criterion NFS every two years doesn't tickle my fancy as much as it should - with a Criterion game you know pretty much exactly what you're getting (heck, HP played so much like Paradise you could mistake them for the same game) and as such I think their releases could start getting a bit samey.

Or maybe it's time EA put the NFS franchise to rest and came up with a new racer IP...

Such CG fans we are...

I'm down for a classic-styled HP... HP3 is nice and all, but the game can be ruined quite easily...

I also sincerely wish Criterion Games smartens up with their programming. If there's one thing I've always hated about Criterion Games, it's the stupid long loading times... especially in Burnout Revenge and HP3..

Do an Open World, but load it before anything else like BP does.

Either:

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: Most Wanted (We can hope! :D )

Or

Need For Speed X Burnout

I'm going to be disappointed if this turns out to be true. It's been over three years since Paradise came out, its about time for the next Burnout retail game.

I was thinking a while ago.. what if EA remade NFS:I-IV? Like a direct port, with some updated graphics. Thundering up Rocky Pass in a Diablo was probably one of my favourite memories...
