The owner of this Porsche 917 says he gets fed up answering questions abut it so he put the answers on a board.

Wish I could've gone again this year, the V8 Firenza Can-An is always a joy to see.

Some things to note , if it was the same as last year, the Legacy will have been driven by David Llewelyn, former Factory Metro 6r4 and Ford RS200 driver.

And I think the 'Metro' is a RWD Honda Type R engine replica, buts it's still pretty quick.

My vid of Firenza from last year.

No Firenza this year. There was a Chevette but it wasn't quite the same...

On closer inspection, yes, it is David Llewelyn driving, which he was doing most excellently.

Not sure about that but there were another couple of 6R4s on the rally stage.

EDIT: Last one seems to be this Clubman.

I got a Nikon D3200 DSLR with 18-55 and 55-300 Nikon lenses at Christmas and when I bought it, I also bought some training. I'm now on Jessop's mailing list and in amongst the usual email offers, was one titled, "Jessops Academy Motorsports Course in association with VW Racing." "Hmmmm," I thought, "that is relevant to my interests" and promptly signed up.

The day was to be at the first round of the British GT championship at Oulton Park on Easter Monday. I turned up and was escorted to the VW hospitality unit where we were introduced to Ian (Jessops) and Jon (Hobley, photographer.) We then watched the drivers' briefing and had (free) breakfast. After a lesson on what settings etc to use, we were let out to the side of the track to take some photos.

Normally, I'd just be mucking about trying settings that I thought would work, but to have professional help on hand at any point for tips and advice was invaluable. I also got to try out Ian's Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens  Gotta get me one of them...

After a lovely (and free) lunch we headed back out again for some more photo taking.

All in all, it was a great day and I would highly recommend it.

[shameless plug]
They are planning to do the same course at the rest of the British GT rounds this year (with the exceptions of Rockingham and Spa) and with the price a pound short of £200 I thought it was great value for money.
[/shameless plug]

Now, onto the photos. I noticed that most of my favourite photos came from later on in the day, so that shows it must have worked.

Cracking stuff for a first effort! 👍

Did you score any good snaps away from the action? I always find there is only so much to base a set of motorsport shots on just panning as its largely just different cars in much the same setting, composition and technique. I end up turning away to focus on other scenes going on around the pits as they can offer some really interesting shots.

But overall, yeah! Good stuff :)

That Bentley is a work of art.

Awesome pics. 👍
It's ear porn too. Sounds like a Spitfire...

No, we were basically just trackside or in the Milltek hospitality unit, although I did have plenty of chance as we walked through the paddock a number of times.

Thanks for the comments 👍

He stopped and got out the car just after the gravel trap, but it drove away after the race. Hopefully no serious damage done.

Fantastic pictures, and the Bentley sounds half like a Spitfire and half like a Corvette

Nice shots. Out of interest, were you trackside for this course or not? It's difficult to tell! There's a couple of angles I'm not actually sure you can get from spectator areas...but I don't know Oulton that well.

My crit (if you were asking for any) is that these all appear to be pans. Whilst panning is great and it's a technique that certainly requires practice to nail, you seem to be lacking any head-ons which often helps to tell the story of an event. Head-ons are more about what angles you can find too rather than just panning. If you're interested this was my set from Oulton here.

If you're at Le Mans with the GTP bunch then I'm more than happy to give some tips & tricks as I won't be working there. :)

Rumour has it a customer of Bentley Glasgow has ordered one and it will be in the showroom later on this year.

We were limited to the spectator areas. I did suggest that they could improve the course by giving us a certain amount of access to trackside areas but they said insurance would be prohibitive. I then said I'd sign a waiver...

Most of my shots that turned out are from the inside of Druids, and the other side of the Avenue, and a few from inside Lodge. I didn't really take too many head-on shots (the nearest I got is when they were coming out of Lodge.)

Looks like a very worthwhile course that they have put on for you. And as you mentioned at £200 it's a relative steal!

I'd certainly be interested in getting some tips and tricks from yourself at Le Mans.

Stick a post up in the Le Mans thread, we are trying to work out who will be going and where they will be

In fairness, that's kinda what I hoped to hear! Not that I've got anything against people coming trackside but it's busy enough and dangerous enough as it is in places without a group of people being taught photography. Perhaps on quieter club meetings it would become more of an option. In regards to the insurance, even us with the required insurance (min of £5 million public liability) we still have to sign a waiver!

Shame you didn't get to do many head-ons with the 70-200 2.8, you would have really felt the benefit of that 2.8 in those.

I'd certainly be interested in getting some tips and tricks from yourself at Le Mans.

Sure, give us a shout nearer the time and I'll happily give some photo tips! :)

Yeah, it was definitely panning only while I had that just down to where we were standing. There was one on ebay for £380 but I missed it while deliberating on whether to get it or not.

I could probably have done with a monopod for head on shots too.

Try Ian (flash camera on ebay) he might be able to get one for you?

I headed down to Croft at the weekend for the HSCC Nostalgia Weekend. There was a full card of historic racing (with a couple of "famous" drivers) as well as a load of military exhibits.

Kelpies (pronounced kell-pee, and add an s for the plural)

Wiki
The Kelpies are 30-metre high horse-head sculptures, standing next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal in The Helix, a new parkland project built to connect 16 communities in the Falkirk Council Area, Scotland.[1]The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and were completed in October 2013.[2] The sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project. The Kelpies are a monument to horse powered heritage across Scotland.[3]

Wiki
Kelpie, or water kelpie, is the Lowland Scottish name given to a water being inhabiting the lochs and pools of Scotland. It has usually been described as appearing as a horse, but is able to adopt human form.

Anyway, pictures...

Tried to find this earlier but I just went ahead and wrote on your profile.
I'm looking at getting the Sigma 70-200 (and all the fancy letters here) for pretty much the same thing, probably near the end of the year. Is there any reason you went with the Tamron over the Sigma? Both are really good from what I've read, and the Tamron has better images when comparing chromatic aberration, but the vignetting is worse and I don't like to change an image that much in post. I'd rather the camera and lens be setup perfectly the first time.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman.

As I'm making quite a lot of British GT liveries in GT Sport, I decided to go to the British GT round at Oulton Park. It was a really wet day, but I enjoyed it and got some decent photos. Unfortunately the 2nd race was stopped after 3 laps behind the safety car, and the meeting abandoned due to a load of standing water at several places round the track.
