A friend of mine recently said, "I halfway feel like a failure, and half feel like a complete slacker, and half like a complete loser." to me in an instant message.

My standard reply to comments like that is, "Welcome to your early 20s, young male in the modern society". But surely there's more to it. I follow with advice to find some goals, spend time with friends, and develop some inexpensive hobbies. Basically distract yourself from the crap that this world is putting out.

Do other 'adult' members have thoughts / suggestions on this? Do some of you younger guys have comments on this emotion? I'm in the middle of both mentalities right now - I'm 25 and I feel the "why do I even try anymore?" syndrome right along with feeling like I'm an adult and knowing what I can change. It's a constant mental battle to keep myself on track and pushing toward better days ... when in fact it's pretty damn good right now.

One-half plus one-half pluse one-half equals three-halves. Your friend should be put on display!

My question is: How can someone be a failure, complete slacker, and a complete loser in his early 20s? It seems to me that his life has just begun.

No Its One And A Half

1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 = 1.5, 1-1/2, Ect.

Doesn't the world "put all of these things out"?

Also known as three halves, 3/2. Math is fun (:

Perhaps I should have been more spacific. All of the bad things the world puts out. Like evil marketing. And the social status in which we "should all be". Physical images we should have. The person we should live up to.

Well, I think you're just making it too complicated... do the things that you genuinely want to do, find the job that satisfies you and makes you feel like you're contributing to society, avoid being a phony, love the people you want to love, and don't get in jail (thus making all of the aforementioned stuff much harder).

I think that's where a lot of depression and what not stems from... people not realizing that if they just did the stuff they want to do, they'd be content!

"Just do it" - sounds like a marketing campain I've heard before ...

But I agree. Most people just sit around wishing they could do what they want, when in actuallity they just need to go do it. If it requires lots of money, then save. You can't have everything but you surely can have a few great things.

I think a little bit of the 'problem' is that parents in today's society tell their children "you can be anything you want" and "you can do anything you want" and "you can have anything you want" which they back up with an absurd amount of toys. Then when the kids get older, real life hits, and they realize they can't have anything they want, they can't be anything they want, and they can't do anything they want. You have to work for what you can have, and it's a lot of work to get there. BUT IT'S WORTH IT. Actually earning the payoff makes it worth so much more.

Can't agree more with everything you said above. :)👍
