I don't like new computers. I was writing a 15,000 word essay (don't ask) when I heard a loud hum from my new Dell Dimension 4400 Desktop. I figured it was nothing, and so I kept writing. Finally, I finish the essay and am about to click the print button when the machine just shuts down and smoke starts coming out the back. come to find out, the CPU had gotten so hot, it melted some of the micro-circuits on the motherboard. I was so mad. and so, My dad sent the tower back to Dell and had them fix it. That is why I haven't been here. I'm sorry if I got anyone nervous or anything. I wasn't making a deadly computer virus that I was going to attach to the board and destroy everyone's computers. My computer simply broke.

Don't like it, don't use it. As simple as that...

I have a brand new Dell Demension 8200...it's great.

Hey, I've got an 8200 as well and of course, I love it! :)

Jordan, that's cool!

Mine is 1.8GHz
normal mouse(with scroller wheel)
normal keyboard
17" monitor(any bigger would not fit in our rolltop desk...)
CD-R drive

We don't need all of that stuff that you have, but you are running this site so you need it.

Has anyone tryied putting GT3 in a DVD player/drive? Just wondering what it does...

The DVD drive would be the only thing that I wish we had...

But we got it for $1500 for the tower, monitor, and the keyboard and stuff. Back in '96 we got our Presario(my PC now)for $2100...expensive crap literally.

My computer is pretty old, but it has never given me any problems, it stands firm as the first day I bought it.

Dont laugh, REALLY DONT DO IT

Amd-k6 with 3d now
400 mhz
64 megs
SiS530 *poop*

But the 56k modem is really stable, my ISP is stable as well.
I think I get the most of it, 53.33333kbps.

With the two games I most play online (Rogue Spear & Half Life Team Fortress) I can say I am happy.

my Presario is worse than your PC Tercel:

166MHz
8bytes of RAM(or something of the sort)
33.6K modem

It's 6 years old!

Nice system for a nice price! I know what you mean about the monitor, though. It took forever to find a desk that would hold this one! Desk manufacturers really don't take large monitors into consideration. :(

hah......I have a 1981 Commodore VIC 20. It's like a keyboard you plug into your TV. My normal comp is a Dimension 8100, P4 1.3, GeForce 2, CD-R, ANd I have a pinnacle video capture card. My fav comp i have, though, is my HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC (picture a laptop, but half as tall.) The thing's got everything, all the office apps, IE, 56k modem built in, PC card slot (mine has a LAN card in it), and a 640x240 screen. Check it out at simplyhpc.com.

How about everyone says hom much disk space they have left?

I have 13.1 gigs/18.6 gigs. ;)

Dells suck, I don't understand why people buy those things for at least twice what they're worth.
"Tech Support"
Ohh sure, You really have lots of problems like
Woman:"Help, I can't open this file in word!"
Tech Guy: "It's a .zip file, you need to unzip it"
Woman: "I Can't find the zipper to unzip it"
Tech Guy: "Hold on while I transfer you to our 1D10T Department"

Mm disk space...
30gig left on my 80gig hd and 16gig left on my 30gig, and 8gig left on my 8gig :)

MistaX, have you ever actually used Dell's tech support? A few years ago when I was still learning the more complex ins-and-outs of computers, the hard drive died on my Dell. I called tech support, waited on hold for less than 20 minutes, and was then gladly walked through procedures for attempting to diagnose the problem and recover my data. The very next day, a Dell technician arrived at my front door with a new hard drive and installed it completely free of charge. Personally, I think that's great service.

People buy Dell's not for their price, but for the quality of the product and the peace of mind knowing that the company that made it will stand behind it and make sure it works.

I haven't needed tech support ever in my life.
I am my own tech support.

Quality?
My comp is quality, 5 years in the making. This comp is a work of art, and total, I think I've spent under $1500, and hell yes I know it works.
This machine is never shut off, only restarted, about once a week or so, never freezes, never randomly shuts off, never any weird noises. Nothing. Just a perfect machine.

No Dell can surpass my machine, by speed (Test wise, not by the numbers) or price and no support can change that.

So, if you haven't ever used their services, you have no right to bash Dell like that. It's great being that confident in yourself, but that kind of dedication and knowledge is hard to come by for the average PC consumer.

It actually lets you explore the DVD. It's got tons of unknown files on it. the computer goes: :thatsodd: and just ignores it.

Jordan, you don't see the long term in a Dell.
Try and upgrade it yourself. The warrenty isn't long enough for them to do it when that comp is outdated. They want you to buy a new one.
Dell comps (and any other big company's) Are O.E.M
As in, Original Equipment Machine.
Dell makes their own parts, parts that you can't go to the store and buy, which means it's imposible to upgrade it yourself.
So in 5 years or so when you look to fix it up with whatever is out at the time, you'll need a new machine.

In the long run, comps like that are not worth it.

true MistaX, but they make them not to break (except when they've been running all week during a 100 degree heatwave)

The only, like only problems I've had with the Dell is that the CD drive makes I high pitch sound when running, and sometimes doesn't want to let go of the CD in it...

And I sometimes get the cooling off hum cause the tower is in the desk, and doesn't have a lot of air movement(if it starts to hum, I usually open the desk door where it is and let it cool down, and it's back to normal).

I agree that's not good for people like yourself, but you've got to look at this from your average computer user's point of view. Take my mom for example: she surfs the web, e-mails, and looks at and edits her digital pictures - that's it. She doesn't want to mess with hardware upgrades and she doesn't know how. She would much rather order a nice new machine rather than trying to learn how to replace her motherboard, flash her BIOS, upgrade her processor, or reformat the hard drive. That's just the way it is for most people - Dell doesn't force it upon anyone (but usually if their first experience is good, they will be a repeat customer).

So far I have been very happy with my 8200's case; it is laid out very good and all the components are easy to get to and work on. I don't see anything that I wouldn't be able to add/modify/upgrade on my own.

I like the new Dell computers. Although I dont have one, my school uses them with Windows 2000. They run damn nice. I would much rather build my own computer then pay a butt load of money for one like a Dell or Compaq.

yeah, i'd rather pay less money for something better than a Dell than waste all that money. I'd just have to learn what I'm talking about first.
