After 4 years together, my Launch PS3 40gb has packed itself in, by refusing to read my Blu Ray discs. It started last night, when I placed GT5 into my PS3. I loaded it, and after the PD Logo, it froze. I couldn't quit, there was no "Loading Data" message. Restarted my PS3, tryed GT5 again. Didn't even read it. I done a temporary fix by Rebuilding File System but now its packed in altogether. It will sometimes read discs, but very often it won't. I get a replacement PS3 very soon. R.I.P PS3 40gb.

:( :banghead: :grumpy:

You can get it fixed for $100 or less. I did 2 years ago. Worth it, I looked online for ps3 repairs in my area and found a shop that fixes all systems.

same thing happened to mine when GT5 came out. I bought a new eye for it but it didn't fix it (I still have the eye, I really need to sell that thing lol), I needed a whole new blu ray reader and they were around $150. So I said the heck with it and bought a new slim.

Nope, Sonys issuing me a free replacement, another 40gb.

My 60GB's laser went after just one year, thats when I found out that all the fatty lasers were pretty poor quality and don't tend to last long (there was a massive shortage of Blu Ray diodes at launch and they were rushed through manufacture resulting in a sub standard construction). Also the original laser module design was overcomplicated in the first place.

I replaced the laser myself and it works now but I hardly even use the console anymore for fear it will break again really easily. Luckily no YLOD..... yet.
