Yeah, Renault won't fly.

If you told everyone who walked into a Nissan dealership that they were tied strongly to a French car company, how many do you think would keep the same positive view of Nissan?

Call em Datsuns, make em cheap, let kids get decent starting cars without having to dig through 15 year old used cars again.

Let's just say that public opinion isn't that high of France in this period of Bush fed stupidity.

Some people still say "Freedom Fries"...I kid you not.

Like was mentioned before, the Datsun name was being used for trucks in Japan up until August 2002! ( http://history.nissan.co.jp/DATSUN/D22/0105/index.html )

Nissan has always had trouble managing its names... yes, the specialty cars of the 60s were branded as Datsuns even in Japan. The US got quite a lot of Roadsters. This was the start of the demise of the British sports car - the 240Z (similar model called "Fairlady Z" in Japan [though they did also get the Fairlady 240Z, but let's not confuse things!]) sealed the deal. The best selling sports car of all time. This car re-wrote the rule books for sports car and is heralded as one of the most important cars of motoring history. The Z33 "350Z" is still called the Fairlady Z in Japan.

So please, some respect is due for the Datsun nameplate.

The original Fairlady, the S211, was not exported though. Only 20 were built. In 1959.

By the way, people go on and on about how 120Y's etc. are such lemons, but how often do you see an economy car from 1973 that isn't a Datsun, or at least Japanese made? You can laugh at these cars all you want, but it only shows your ignorance. They served a purpose, and they arguably did it better than anyone else at the time.

So bring back the Datsun nameplate? No thanks. Renault couldn't do it justice. Let the legend live on without being tarnished.

Bravo, Alfadog. 👍 What a presentation. I had never seen a President with custom rims on.

Seriously awesome pictures Alfadog! 👍👍

I agree with you on Datsun, I didn't even know about the S211 (only 20 made! wow), learn something new everyday.

BTW Welcome to GTPlanet Alfadog :)

I agree. It's become WAY too hard for a young, first time buyer to purchase a new car these days. Even a new Mazda3 hatch at $20k would cost me $400 a month.:scared: We need stuff in the $10-14k area.👍

It's even worse here; Canadian car prices are a lot higher compared to the States. We pay around $24k for a Mazda 3 hatch, and that's the base model with some options. No wonder lots of the cars at my high school parking lot are 15-year-old (halfway to) beaters. Although there's always the stinking-rich Chinese runaway officials who buys M-B CLK55 for their kids....(this is true by the way)

Its so funny though, these automakers coming out with their 'youth' brands and the median age of buyers is 50-ish.

Dude, you mean Honda Elements and Scion xB's aren't hip and cool?

They've got loads of cargo space, great gas mileage, are easy to park, and come with great warranties.

I would think kids would eat that up.

...

Kid's don't want more FWD crap, if it must be Flawed Wheel Drive, make it light as hell, cheap as hell, and run good.

Funny how that worked out for Scion... I still laugh every time I see an older person driving one, as they are "meant" for my 18-34 year old age group that I belong to.

...Quite frankly, I'd never want one, despite the money that it "saves" me over buying a used car.

I'll stick with my Volkswagens and Chevrolets, as they seem to represent my "youthful" attitude quite well.

I will come out and say that I would love to have a Scion xA...

For my mom, so I can stop worrying about the reliability of her car, and she can have enough room to haul brats and stuff around, with good mileage.

I've never seen someone under 30 or so in a xB, and I don't think I've seen anyone young in an xA. College chicks love the tC though.

...Thus proving once again that the tC is a chick car...

The automakers thought the same way you have. But like I've said, the median age for new car purchase on these 'youth' brands in in the mid 50's.

scion brand is too crap for any "youth" person to consider buying. I mean ones a crappier version of the celica and the others look like a stubby version of post man pats van.

Definetly not "cool" or "gangsta"

The offical marketing movement that Scion seems to have been using is an "underground" feeling to everything.

...What is "underground" about a massive marketing campaign targeted at younger folks who like hip-hop?

I like hip hop. I dont like scions. Most people who are in the urban scene would want a BMW or mercedes, after theyve gone through the hot/warm hatch stage and theyre insurance has calmed down.

My favorite thing with these brands is how they try to promote individuality in a mass production market. It makes me laugh and cry all at once.

Another funny thing about Scion is how they say they want to help first-time car buyers by giving them "good deals" on interest rates on their loans... Ha, I almost rolled over when I herd that. For me to go and finance a Scion, it would cost far more to operate the car there than it would for me to buy a used Audi or BMW.

I think you guys are buying into Toyota's B.S. marketing little too literally. Corporations just uses these kinds of tactics to trick the consumers into buying their products. Always remember their bottomline: $$$. The rest doesn't matter as much to them.

As for the affordability, I thought Scions were priced reasonably. Just don't go out of control on expensive options. Cars already has all the basic options you need.
I believe they base the trade-in value in wholesale pricing too, which means that they will rip you off just a little. ;) And their cars have set MSRP, so you won't get ripped off too bad there either. If you suck at new car buying, Scions would be a nice choice for you. I'd imagine Saturn works the same way.

On car loans, unless you have flawless credit(which 99% of young people don't) and are looking to finance for like 3 years, why even bother getting loans at a dealer? In addition to the price of the car and the trade-in, loan is where they will try to rip you off. I always ask for car loan approval from my own credit union, first. Even then, shady salesman will try to get you(or trick you into) to go thru their "banks".

Oh the joy of car shopping. :D

I think you could talk down a Scion pretty easily now that the novelty of the cars have offically worn off. Quite frankly, there isn't much that is too special with their cars now that they are using a chassis and engine that are out of date in the Toyota lineup. It all makes me wonder how long it will take untill they jump on the Yaris ship, but I don't know how that will effect the prices of the Scions given their "value" attitude that they are supposed to have.

...Quite frankly, with the Rabbit on the way, the Fit allready available down the street, and the possibility of the Astra comming soon as well, it further solidifies my reasoning NOT to buy a Scion...

Simply put: they don't offer interesting alternative or a compelling reason to buy the car. tC is about the only fun car that's in the lineup, and that can get costly once you start ticking the options box.

IMO, the Scions just aren't fun to drive at all, and that is the first HUGE turnoff for me. Secondly, the cars just feel cheap overall as well. They just don't offer the solid feeling of the VW's and Hondas that are similarly priced, and thus I wouldn't look at one.

Granted, there was a point in time where I thought that the xA could eventually be my next car. But, alas, that dream came to a crashing halt with the introduction of the Fit, Versa, and later the Rabbit. And now that Scions have been out for a few years and they are on the streets more often, the novelty of the cars really have worn off. They are no longer the only "cute" cars on the road, and by no means are their designs "edgy" like they had once promised. But even if they are customiseable to the point where no one could have the same car, why is it that every one I see is either Silver, Gold, or Purple, go without alloy wheels, and use the same 4-speed automatic?

xA is nice, but I'd also rather have Honda Fit. At this point, xB would be the only Scion I'd consider. Many hates the design, but it indeed does appeal to many as well. I thought Nissan's Cube was better looking at one point, but now I think xB is much, much nicer. tC doesn't really do it for me. It's pretty decent looking I suppose.
