The reason:
When you push down on VW manual trannies, and put it in first, its reverse.

Or so I've heard. I can't say thats true, because I haven't driven a VW.

You mean like the bimmer's shifters(I think it was the bimmers), where one gear on the far left is the "R"?.

Early Holden Commodores were like that also, you had to push the shifter down though like mistaX said.

My dad's 65 stang 4 speed has "R" up and to the left and then slightly up and left is 1st. I don't think I've ever mistakenly put it into R before. My car is down and to the right for "R".

The S2000, you have to push down and put it in 6th. IMPOSSIBLE to put it in reverse by accedent, basicly. I know this from experiance.

Theres no seperate thing for Reverse, you just press down on the shifter.

Yea that's true, that's the way it is on my VW. You'd have to be an idiot to put it in reverse though, you have to give it a push down and then into gear, not just push it left and forward like you would for first.
