My and some friends had an idea for a pretty good race, we had this Grid lined up:

Citroen 2CV '54
Fiat 500 '65
Subaru 360 '54
Volkswagen Kubelwagen '44
Volkswagen Schwimwagen '43
Volkswagen Beetle '49
Honda Z ACT '70

(Sorry if the years are wrong, I'm away from my PS3)

But we couldn't decide on a track. Anyone else done a similar race, because we need a good track for this, one that isn't too long (Cape Ring) or too boring (Indy or Daytona). Any suggestions?

You could build a couple of short custom tracks, Tokyo kart for example ( it's flat ).

Eiger Tarmac track might be OK, test going up the hill though, could be a bit slow.

You need a track with very tight turns in order to be interesting at those speeds; otherwise you can take all turns flat-out and it becomes a contest of meager slipstreaming (between the same models) or of top speed (between different models). Imagine a NASCAR oval race, but very slow.

Looking over the stock tracks:
  • Kart Space I may work well, if you have it.
  • Eiger Nordwand Short Track could be interesting with the downhill hairpin complex, but otherwise would be just a pleasant cruise. Unless you add rain. :trouble:
  • Autumn Ring Mini, maybe. It’s a bit small for regular cars, a bit large for actual karts, but may be just right for 2CVs and Fiat 500s and the like.
  • Top Gear Test Track may make things interesting as the field spreads out and starts overlapping itself. :trouble: Otherwise, Hammerhead is the only actual challenge at those speeds.
  • Circuito de Madrid (full configuration) has a lot of sudden tight turns and even a chicane, which are points of conflict which can sort out the winners even at walking pace, but otherwise it’s just cruising.
  • Côte d’Azur is tight and twisty enough that it may work well.
  • If you want something different, dirt/snow tracks may spice things up a bit! (Although everyone will have to buy dirt and/or snow tires for their cars.)
If I were picking, I’d go with Kart Space I or Côte d’Azur.

Otherwise, you may want to roll up a Course Maker track, probably using one of the Kart templates (Eifel Kart or Tokyo Bay) – don’t use Mt Aso, I’ve found that 2CVs sometimes can’t climb the hills there – with perhaps only 2 sections (to keep it short) (for comparison, Tsukuba Circuit is about 2000 meters or 1¼ miles long) and with Section Complexity at 10 for each, and perhaps Road Width very narrow to squeeze a crowd together and sort them out. Don’t use Corner Bank Angle, that would make it too easy to corner.

In any case, I’d suggest limiting tires to Comfort Hard (or Comfort Medium at most), so it can still be a contest of driving skill, and therefore interesting. So it can still be a race even if, half the time, it’d be faster to get out and go on foot!

Thanks guys, we have decided on doing almost a series of it. We picked

Tsukuba
Cote D'Azur
Top Gear Test Track
Tokyo Bay Cart Track

Thanks again for all your responses, will probably do a Race report or two :-)

Are they tuning prohibited races?
If so, inclines are always an issue with that.
Luckily there are flat tracks like Tsukuba & TGTT.

Cote Dazur has that uphill that's kind of an exertion for the Fiat 500. Found that out when jackargent & I used them from the rec garage there & were struggling up the hill. However, aceboy127 & I managed to get it up Mount Hop Top incline...

I have a twisty little Tokyo Bay kart track that's pretty cool with the really low power cars. We've used it in VCRC races for the Z Act, the Subaru 360, and some others.
Toyko Bay is always flat, and narrow, so it's good for small super low power cars. In fact, I think they're more fun there than karts. (I rather do karts on Rome, frankly.)
You can also design some Eifel Kart tracks that are good w/ low power cars... provided they're not too steep with inclines.

Tsukuba is an excellent track for lower power cars because it's also completely flat. Tsukuba is great for most cars really.

I know of 2 Toscana Tarmac custom tracks that are really good w/ low power cars. One is by cc570 called Lagunitas Kei, and another was made by chuyler1 called Lemons Country Circuit. But I think even those, which do not have much elevation changes... I felt were a bit too much for an unmodified Fiat 500, and certainly for the Z Act or 360. Those cars, unmodified, can be a drag on any sort of incline, even slight ones.

Anyway, in looking at this line up of cars... I really want to highly recommend 2 other cars you may be delighted to race...

Toyota Sports 800
&
Honda S800

These 2 cars are in my top 5 favourite cars in the game!!! They are a blast to drive! :) We've had several event races with these cars, unmodified, and we all had a lot of fun with them, over the past couple years. :)

The Honda is great on any number of twisty tracks and can sustain on an incline pretty well actually, and I highly recommend the Toyota Sports 800 on Eifel Kart tracks, where the inclines are never too steep for it. :D

A friend and I did something like this to but with big old muscle cars vs small old nimble cars and we had a lot of fun on Eiger.
