The all-new replacement for the Land Rover Defender is scheduled for launch in 2013, only the fifth time in 60 years that the iconic model has been renewed by the company.

Land Rover is currently in the exploratory stages for the new Defender with design, engineering and marketing teams looking at the early engineering and business case for the new car.

The significant date, six years away, is critical because of future emissions standards, rather than crash legislation. Land Rover is confident it can get the revised 2007 Defender, a revamp of a car whose lineage goes back to 1983, through the next phase of pedestrian-impact legislation in 2010.

What is known about the new Defender is that it will retain rugged go-anywhere durability and the styling will be an evolution of today’s look, influenced by design director Gerry McGovern’s new ‘premium adventure’ styling theme.

It is already clear that the business case must revolve around a hefty rise in annual sales, from today’s 25,000 to closer to 50,000 units.

That rise will come from extra sales in new markets like Russia, China and Asia, but more significantly North America, where airbag legislation killed the current model in the late 1990s.

It is also clear that the new Defender will be built on a dedicated platform. Land Rover could share componentry with the ‘integrated bodyframe’ structure from the Discovery, but sources confirm it’s too costly to underpin a utility model.

A key issue is whether a future Defender needs to be offered with today’s range of around 170 different variants such as tipper trucks and fire engines.

They better keep delaying it indefinitely, because Ford would only screw it up. Look what Mercedes did to the replacement of the G-Wagen (yes, I know it is still on sale), or what Mercedes did to the Jeep Wrangler. Hell, look what GM did to the Hummer brand.

What is wrong with the new Wrangler? I mean people whined a lot when the YJ came out but it's pretty accepted by now...

Oh, its nice. But Chrysler made it too civilised, and they completely screwed up the styling. The two door had its wheelbase stretched, for no reason. The Unlimited Rubicon is officially the best American SUV on the market, but the two door has lost a lot of ground in my eyes.
And its missing the engine it deserves as a Jeep.

The last one was called the TJ I believe, the current one is the JK (ha ha). There is a new Rubicon Unlimited that I see quite often at school, and while the Jeep looks excelent, the door handles have always bothered me...

...Still, go Defender! I love it when old-school designs continue to go on, and on, and on, and on. My guess is that even after Land Rover discontinues the model, someone is going to buy the design and continue building them. They are just such a huge icon to the 4X4 community the world over, I see no reason why a private company wouldn't build them continually...

At least in America, the only thing that is comparable to the Defender off-road is the Wrangler, and thats a make-your-pick situation. I'll go Wrangler Rubicon in that round (personal preference), but both will put up a good fight...

...Now I just wish GM would do a hardcore H3 with the V8, strip out all of the unnecessary crap, and throw some outrageous off-road equipment underneath it for right around the mid $30K range...

Yes, I was referring to the purists that complained when the long running CJ was replaced by the YJ in the 80s. No one really stood up and took notice when the TJ was introduced because it was so similar to the YJ, as I understand.

lets hope they keep the defender a true decent landie, not turn it into some luxury road car like the rest >.< land rover still the best :D
