Defense against offline AI behind me?

I'm pretty frustrated with AI drivers spinning me off the road from behind in A-spec, especially in high-horsepower races where handling requires much more finesse than, say, the Lupo cup. :-)

I want to drive at the limit of the car I'm in (or at least at the safe limit of my own skill) in a relatively realistic fashion. I want tough races. I want razor thin victories, and to lose if I make a mistake. That usually means entering with an underpowered car with Comfort tires against cars that are faster, and/or have better cornering, which means they pretty much all out-accelerate me and come into corners faster, meaning I get bumped, a lot.

I race cleanly. I even give the dumb AI far more room than they need because I've learned over the years that GT AI cars are eight feet wide and weigh about two tons plus driver. GT5 seems to be not too different in this respect. Also seemingly unchanged is the AI's penchant for following the racing line without braking or swerving even if it means smashing into the back of the slower car in front on a straightaway.

I drive with a G25 wheel on Simulation mode with no driving aids (maybe ABS at 1 depending on the car). With a clean track, I run clean laps. But out of frustration, I took three deep breaths and tried turning on some driving aids for the first time since GT3, and, while that made me relatively immune to the AI, I also found I could take the inside line into a 2nd gear hairpin accelerating in 6th and not really burden myself with frivolous details like the brake pedal. Not fun, either. I do not want to win the game this way.

What can I do about the AI? It feels like I need to resort to artificial tactics (either driving aids, overpowered car, or being a right a-hole to the AI) to not get spun off the track by the clueless AI. Offline is important to me.

Whoops, I guess that was a rant. Anyway, am I missing a better way to handle the AI in my rearview? Would sure like some input!

It's sad but you have to drive around the AI instead of against them. This means checking your rear view mirror religiously and getting out of their way. I see where you're coming from but there isn't any special trick to make the AI less crappy.

Completely agree with the OP, I feel the same way.

Why does an AI driver need to push me 400m down the straight on my right rear corner with my counter steering like crazy before he realises that this isn't going to fly and he finally brakes, by which time the whole field has passed us

Why do I get disqualified from the C-10 licence when I'm on the apex of a corner right behind a car, unable to move because we are boxed in, then some other AI driver arrives at the corner like there is no one there and rams into me, i then ram into the guy in front and bob's your uncle, disqualified

you would think if you hire just a single AI programmer to come in on Wednesdays for 3 hours for six years. (Thats 117 full days by the way), that he would be able to sort the damn AI out.

But no, they were too busy doing... oh right I dunno what they were doing for 6 years
