The online world right now is a lawless post apocalyptic destruction derby. How do you defend yourself?

You see an Elise coming up on your inside corner getting ready to punt you. What do you do?

One time I hit the brakes and pushed into him when he got along side me. We both got a penalty but it was better than just being punted off while the offender was rewarded.

We need some defensive vigilante techniques! Any suggestions?

Sorry, but how did you know that the Elise was going to punt you off and also I believe you "brake tested" him/her, which is just as bad IMO.

Are you one of the guys who pull a gun and shoot every time someone walks towards them as they're obviously closing in for a robbery? Guess so. Just for your information, there are clean Elise drivers who race for racing, not crashing. I'm one of them. And we surely as hell don't like the ones - like you, it seems - who make it impossible for us to have a good race just because of the car we're driving.

Because I had the line and there was no room for him but he was forcing himself in.

If your near the apex and you see an elise squeezing it's noze in on your inside you're about to be punted.

Later in the race I saw him punting other players. I wish I rememberd his psnid..."makimbo" or something like that.

Just because your elise can corner really well doesn't mean you can overtake people on the inside.

We need some defensive driving techniques.

Defensive vigilante techniques? How about just being faster than the guy 'trying' to take you out?

Given that you want to drive online and you want to stay clean, what to do is quite obvious. You just look at the situations you get taken out at, and avoid them. Meaning...
  • approaching corners after long straights, brake beside the racing line to avoid being rammed by too-late-breakers
  • don't get into direct 1:1-fights in corners. Just let the aggressive one pass, he'll probably lose it anyway a few corners later
  • try to avoid driving beside other questionable players for a longer period - it's likely they will try to gain an advantage by ramming you off the track
In conclusion, just drive clean and calm and stay out of potential trouble. It'll probably feel like you're just giving in and letting them pass, but in the long run, it'll pay. At least you'll be the one that has done it the right way...

I'm a clean driver. I'm one of the good ones. I'll only overtake someone when it's safe to do so. I would never try to beat someone to the inside when I know it's impossible.

The guy I took action against was running around punting everyone. I was totally justified.

Of course you shouldn't be paranoid and take preemptive action. But let's not pretend that you can't tell that someone is trying to knock you off the road.

And let's not pretend that there aren't some people who do nothing but go around punting everyone they can in their elise. And it's not the Elise's fault. It's just that because it can corner better it can get on the inside of most other cars rather easily.

Again, it's not the Elise, it's those jerks who use it like some kind of weapon. These people will continue doing what they're doing just as long as they can get away with it.

Edit: the Interceptor makes a good suggestion. Basically just let them pass they'll crash later anyway. And that's really my intention. I want to discuss various defensive options for surviving in the Mad Max GT5P online world. Let's discuss how to deal with these overly aggressive drivers.

You've just gotta let em past.

It's not worth losing so much time over. Getting into a one on one fight does loose you time. It might be the difference between a couple of positions too. When I see two cars ahead having a nudging battle I know if I watch them for a few seconds they'll shunt each other off the racing line giving me a clear shot to get past them both.

Remember, while you're trying to figure out how to nudge back against the Elise I'm sat right behind you both in my Scoob looking for a gap.

Bumpers or not, if they get past you (WITHOUT bumping you) and you can't catch them up then that's nothing to do with them cheating, they're just faster than you are. Of course, they bumped people who were between you and them to get the opportunity to pass you which IS cheating, but that's nothing to do with them being faster. If you let them pass and you catch up, just apply the pressure and they'll mess up eventually. And if they bump you and get past, you might still be able to get in front of them again without resorting to their level... Its more fun that way, anyway.

Or we can wait for PD to update the dreamcast era options and have some proper races.

just using a line around the corner that is slightly different to the proper racing line, its a tiny bit slower but you only use it when you got someone dodgy behind you.

Have you seen the movie MAD MAX? Thats how.

We don't need better car physics, we NEED machine guns and missiles on our cars! :sly:

Hehe...sometimes I feel like Mad Max dealing with The Night Rider and his lawless crew.

Anyway, I want to add that sometimes you hit someone by mistake and if that is the case you pull over and wait for them. That way it's clear that it was an accident.

Now, I gotta put on my black leather gloves and go back out there.

So you never gonna win any single race...

I drive clean as long as the others stay clean. When someone tries to push me off the road, im gonna push him too.
And i do it a lot better then them.

i have to admit i sometimes don't try my best to race to the utmost cleanness, but when i get punted off from the track (usully by an elise or GT-R) i don't seek revenge, just let them be... they usually punt themselves off without need for assistance, especially at suzuka :dopey:

Dreamcast had its own era?

I have to agree with this though. The only real solution is more options for racing. Anything else is a half-measure.

you guys dont forget that crashing is a part of racing, and there are cheaters and losers, and winners as well. just look at the glory days of btcc. that's what i think about when i get punted off the track. just makes me smile. in the end, you're only racing for fun anyways.

[*]approaching corners after long straights, brake beside the racing line to avoid being rammed by too-late-breakers

Yesterday I did that with a Elise driver. I pulled to the side and mashed the brakes, but the Elise driver didn't get the message. He pulled to the side trying to slipstream me and Bang!!! I was out there flying!

I don't know if he was trying to bump me or slipstream me, but I sure ain't gonna try that again!

...Or atleast for the next 2 minutes

Here's a good technique. I was racing at London against 2 people. Approaching the first corner hairpin and braking I looked back and seen the person in 2nd was going to ram me, so I feined my turn-in (made it look like I would, then held the outside line just that little longer) and sure enough he went plowing up the inside trying to hit where he thought I was going, so he missed me, then I turned into the corner and just as I was going around the guy in 3rd flew past just behind me trying to hit me also but missed.

Lots of defensive driving techneqs and most of the good ones were covered earlier in the thread. One thing to remember is if someone is trying to punt you theres very little you can do to stop them! just be ready to react quickly to counter any punt LOL Majority of people are using the elise in the 650 class now (real shame) but I supose if you want to race at the front all the time then you have NO OPTION, this is due to PD making a mistake and one which should be put right on the 15th! quick one about the bad press the elise is getting (I don't have one) first up the majority of people drive one (you need one to have a good chance of winning) those who don't drive them are at a big disadvantage in the corners so are a little miffed at this, but most importantly, those drivers who lean and punt to win drive the elise to win, it's there fault not the cars, there are plenty of good drivers in elises out there and I've had many a good scrap with the good guys in my pace car (F40 and other non elises LOL) A final good one for defense, try and keep the inside line closed, lrt them go round the outside, if they over cook it they have no where to go but off it's down to there skill if they pull it off, just remember on the exit your going to follow the race line to the outside as you feed the power on....try not to lean on them if there still there!

The Elise can out brake anything, full stop, ergo if one is close behind you he's gonna punt you off wether he means it or not, best defense is to keep the inside line as tight as possible, make them go the long way round. And in reply to the people who are clean Elise drivers, i have yet to meet any Elise drivers who weren't extremley aggressive drivers, making space to overtake by simply pushing other people off the track, I hate to say it but if i see an Elise, it's fair game.

I have yet to be offered drugs by someone who wasn't black. I hate to say it, but if I see a black guy, it's fair game.

Oh no, wait, that's a ridiculous thing to say. Phew.

Defensive driving on the inside lane is the only acceptable form of defence. Taking someone out just because they have a faster car than you is not in accordance with proper rules of racing whether that's online or in the real world.

Well I have never been offered drugs, and thats a racist comment my friend.

My comment is purely based on fact, simple really.

Not racist, stereo typing which a sarcastic twist drawing parallels with your original comment. Unfortunately your comment wasn't humorous as you seriously feel all elise drivers are the same and are "dirty" drivers, this is FAR from the truth! Trying to win an argument by calling people racist really sums you and your attitude up! Your comment was based on your opinion and possibly you experience with the game.....this is in NO WAY "fact' you just compound what your saying by making that statement!

Oh dear.

My comment is purely based on fact, simple really.

You failed to see the subtle comparison I drew between my statement and yours, I notice.

Me being prejudiced against ALL black people because everyone who has offered me drugs has been black is exactly as retarded as you being prejudiced against ALL Elise drivers online because everyone who has been aggressive on the track has been an Elise driver.

Luckily I don't hold that viewpoint. So I'm not a retard (well, not for this at least).

Actually, he just did the same thing you did, with a different subject.
Do you see the similarities now?
EDIT:
Wow, in the time it took me to post that, there were 2 new replies!
