Hey all, recently I've found that while I was designing some wheel stands/racing cockpits my current computer desk was becoming all cluttered with paper all over the place leaving very little room to actually work with so this became the inspiration for the design of my new table.

My 'Design Desk' features a large working space of 2 square metres.

It contains two long drawers for storage to keep the desk space uncluttered.

The integrated shelf with it's generous width allows for higher placement of larger objects that would normally take up the desk space below it.

The rear board provides mounting space for a large power board to eliminate cable mess from the floor while making vacuuming the area a simpler task.

The ability to fold away the desktop into it's space saving mode makes it suitable for smaller areas where a large desk is still required.

It can go further by folding away the feet to become a narrow rectangular volume to simplify moving it about.

I will be manufacturing this within the next few weeks so stay tuned for photos of the actual build to come very soon.

The whole 'folding tabletop' concept originated from the 'keyboard platforms' I had made for use with my wheel stand designs and is essentially a beefed up and reworked version of it. The wheel stands and race seat can be found in my other thread in the steering wheel section of the forums ie https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=123594

Thanks for looking, I'll be constantly updating progress on my website so please check it out here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/93360Dzyn/201106838164

Cheers!:)

Nice. I have also noticed that you can easily put a steering wheel on the desk also. So do you planning on selling these? I'm pretty interested into getting a wheel and pedal setup just for this during the summer.

Thanks, in terms of the desk the height of the desktop is quite standard at 74cm/29" which in my opinion is too high as the seating position would be similar to that of a bus driver. I believe my wheel stands are much better suited as they are designed to be used on a sofa/couch which is quite similar to a normal car's driving position.

About selling, I'm still working on finding a suitable manufacturing method as well as completing other prototype designs along the way so it will be a while before I'm ready to take orders but hopefully I'll get all this completed before June/July.

Also I assume you're in America so it may be quite tricky/expensive to send such a large table through freight but the wheel stands are more manageable in terms of postage cost due to their smaller size.

Anyways thanks for your interest!

Yeah I live in New York. So is the transparent part of the drawers gonna be plastic or glass? You could also supply different color options for the glass if you plan on selling it anytime soon.

The drawer base in my prototype build will be made from polycarbonate, however it can be substituted for acrylic (clear/white/tinted) or plywood. Glass would require a different method of construction altogether. There can also be a few other options such as various length of drawers and also the type of desktop material used (laminated pine panel or finger jointed pine panel).

Because the desk is so large my current plans for it is to possibly put it into very limited production as a special order item. I should be able to complete the prototype build in the next week or so with photos to come shortly after.

Okay so after a few months of distractions I have finally managed to complete the prototype build of the 'Design Desk'. During this time I also made a few additional features to enhace the overall design of the original concept.

That is some really great work you are doing there! I love the Velcro idea you did there too. You know if there is a big enough gap between the shelf and the table you can add some cd case holders.

Top notch design and functionality. What program did you use to design it before you built it?

Thanks guys! Yep the gap is just a bit bigger than those 50 CD/DVD spindles if that's what you mean, currently have a few of those underneath the shelf and also my 100 CD wallet fits just fine etc. I used CATIA as my CAD and drafting software to produce the exacting dimensions needed in the build.
