I have lurked on this forum for a year without ever registering becasue I just find what I need and had no desire to post. However I now desperately need someone who knows what I can do to help my pathetic situation.

I have been playing GT5 since release on my PS3 with no issues whatsoever. I am at lvl 40 A/B spec and have over 1000 cars, all earned 100% legitimately.

One day a couple of months ago the game froze while loading a track. I did not shut off the power, I quit the game by using the PS button. However ever since that time my game was subject to frequent freezes. I read about he issue with the large game save file problem. I deleted some tracks, replays, and other stuff to get the save file down to a smaller size. Still would freeze continually. Long story short, I decided to delete the game data and start with a fresh install becasue I thought the game data might somehow be corrupted. I backed up my HD and did a full system reset to make sure it wasn't my system. The game installs the latest update (now 2.0) properly and gets to the screen where it asks if I want to preinstall 8 GB of game data. When it gets to 20 minutes remaining it freezes and will not complete the install no matter how many times I try. If I abort this and try to install the game data from within the game settings menu, it does the same and freezes with 3 min left. In either case the progress bar is only shows about 10-20% of install progress.

Does anyone know what the issue is or what I need to do to be able to get GT5 to fully install. My disc is flawless without so much as a tiny scratch or smudge. How can I tell if the issue is a hardware or software issue?

Help please! :ouch: :banghead:

Well the only thing I can suggest is :
-Only copy your GT5 game save on to a separate USB
-Do a quick reformat
-restart the PS3 and let it do it's firmware updates
-now only load your GT5 game save
- now put in GT5 game disc and do firmware update
- At this point you should try playing GT, without the 8gb install, if it works good
- now proceed with the 8GB install and cross your fingers

I'm playing right now without installing the big game data file. It's slow but 2.0 seems to load the tracks a little bit faster than before. It has only froze on me once so far. I may just keep going with this fresh start and not try to reinstall the 8 GB file. Will all the game data eventually install little by little as I continue to play?

I reformatted it from XMB->Settings->System Settings->Format Utility->Full Format. I have a 320 GB HDD and it took 18.5 hours.

Reformatting is a complete wipe of the HD
Rebuilding the HD, reorganize's your information and defrags your HD.
The two are completely different!

Try this, remove any disc in the drive, disconnect any USB attached, Manually power down the PS3 by holding the power switch down, one it's off, press and hold the power switch it should beep twice this is the video reset. manually power down the ps3 again, once again HOLD the power switch until it beep 3 times and bring's you into the service menu, Rebuild harddrive and remapp harddrive is what you want

The options are

1. Restart system
2. Restore default settings
3. Restore file system
4. Rebuild database
5. Restore PS3 system
6. System update

Are you saying to choose option 4? I'm not clear on what you mean when you say "remapp hard drive".

Sorry,(3) restore file system is the one you want

OK. I've done that before but I tried it again anyway. I get the message "The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored." Then it does it's thing for a minute or two and the system reboots. Immediately afterward I attempted to install again but the game still freezes and won't complete the install.

Anything else to try?

Sorry, I can't help you with your problem and I don't wanna sound like a smart ass but the tracks and replays are not saved in the save file. They are saved in the game data.

If the pre-install doesn't work... Don't use it. It's a waste of time anyways. Whether the game expands from the disc or expands from the hard drive it is hardly a big enough difference to justify the time it takes to pre install. I race with people that didn't do their pre install regularly and their game works just fine.

As for your game freezes, be sure that every time you return to GT5, you restart your PS3. GT5 used to freeze on me every other day. Now I reset the PS3 every time I'm going to play GT5, and it hasn't frozen in weeks.

Well thanks for that. I always thought that it was a part if the game save data. I think I read that somewhere here on the forum.

Part of my problem is that it never once froze in almost a year of play and now it does. I never had to cycle the system power off and on before to prevent freezes and I shouldn't have to now. I appreciate the advice, but what I want is for my game to work the way it's intended to work (like it used to) without me having to wait a long time for things to load or turn my PS3 off and back on between every race to make gameplay stable. I want the thumbnails of all my cars to show up in my gagage. I want to buy a car and not have to cross my fingers and pray that it doesn't freeze up before the game puts it in my garage. In short I want it to work like its supposed to work without me having to do anything special. I don't think that's unreasonable to ask.

Things take much longer to load since the full game data isn't installed than it did before when it was installed. It might not seem like a big difference to you, but it feels like eons to me. And thanks for the tip about restarting the system each time, I'll probably do that until I can get it properly fixed. But as I said before, it's ludicrous to have to reset the system every single time I want to play GT5. That shouldn't have to be the case.

Yeah dude, sorry I don't know what else I can add, I pretty much had the exact same problems 6 months ago, I will say though like you I backed my entire drive and in my case my full back up was corrupted, luckily I saved a second GT save data and replays on a separate USB key ("thank god") before I did my reformatting. Personally I think if your reloading your full back-up, nothing is fixed, the problem is still there, all you did was back up the problem. I now regularly "restore my files" before I do any back-up.

Any system that "boots up" you will need to restart occasionally. This includes the PS3. There is no such thing as a perfect machine.
