Ive been lurking on the boards for a while reading the drifting posts and i have a few questions about the usage of drifting and its benefit or detriment to cornering and racing in general.

Drifting (or controlled sliding) to me would seem like something to avoid when cornering or racing at high speeds because it put a coefficient drag on the tires and slows the car. It also increases the difficulty in controlling the car as opposed to controlled cornering. My main questions are why are people drifting when it impacts negatively on cornering unless its being use as a substitute for a braking(?). Also, are the people that drift doing it for a hidden benefit or is it just for the enjoyment of the drift itself?

Drifting has never been and will never be about speed. Please understand this. Drifting is about fun and expression, not being fast.

Yes, there are things that you learn in drifting that can apply to "grip" racing. However, drifting itself has nothing to do with being fast.

Thank you.

I consider driting to be like doing tricks with a car. I get a much better feeling of accomplishment landing a big drift ratther than shaving .2 sceonds off my lap time. Not only that, but there's different styles of drifting. I think it's more fun to watch too.

i thought there were only 2 different styles... show and speed.... yes....there is a SPEED style to drifting.....who woulda knew...

Maybe referring to different ways of initiating drift, (power over, feint... etc.) or maybe to the differences in regular FR drifting, AWD drifting or FF handbraking.

not only that, there's high mid and low power and also the individuals settings too. you can defnitely tell the difference between a cmd vid and an fbi if you were to watch them, but i guess that also gets into editing as well...

The whole point of drifting is to have fun and enjoy yourself.
Also, you don't need to spend thousands of bucks in a car in order to drift. It's just a kind of "sport", it's about style and fun. It's about master your beast, take you car (and the laws of pysics) to the limits and still control it.
You don't have to be a huge fan of cars or racing to enjoy it. 👍
Got it? :sly:

for fun it looks cool it does have some advantages in grip racing but mainly from poor technique recovery and being able to sneak into an unexpected line and remain a better exit soeed, for th emost its not great in racing but does have its uses

i wouldnt say different ways of initiating a drift are different "styles" those are just different techniques.....

show drifting with amzingly long drifts and angles, then theres like rally racin style on tarmac. hittting every corner spoton, yet alittle faster, i love the drifting/powersliding in my under powerd alfa around monaco. trial breaking in gt4 is way harder, seems like more brakes in the rear for that is worse, :guilty:

Drifting is a technique and there are different styles in utilizing this technique. We drift because we love to and it is simply fun. I never thought of it as doing tricks, but I can see that relationship...much like freestyle bmx, where its not about the racing but speed does come into play.

Drifiting is IMO the best and most fun way to take a corner when I get a car you'll see me(granted your near me)tuning my car and practicing drifting. Drifting is not all show but can be used for the fastest way around a corner I beleive in some spots in grip when you brake to take the turn you lose to much speed but when you drift you slow to a certain point and (perferred for me) fishtail and downshift breaking traction on your tires. This allows your car to slide sideways into a turn while keeping high rpms(most times). It allows you to feel the great sense of speed and what would I beleive would feel like defying the laws of physics.

In the ever immortal words of Keiichi Tsuchiya the "Drift King"
"I drift not because its the fastest way around a corner but the best/funest"
