which wheel should i buy? im buying my first wheel soon and i want to know which would be best. i kind of want the 911 more as its got a h shifter + clutch. i think this would be better for me because i want to learn how to drive a manual shift in real life. (im just learning how to drive in real life )

I started with a Mad Catz wheel that I used to play the original Forza for Xbox. It cost less than $100. This wheel was OK, at best. A few years ago, I upgraded to the MS Xbox 360 wireless racing wheel, which I used for several years to play Forza 2, Forza 3 and Need for Speed Shift. I bought it for $99.99. Overall, I enjoyed my experience with this wheel and favored using it over my controller for each of these games. This wheel was mid-level at best, however, because the force feedback was relatively tame and I had to sit the wheel on my lap. In November, I purchased a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel, just before GT 5 was released. This wheel cost me $85, after discounts and Best Buy reward zone certificates. I also purchased a wheelstandpro on which to mount the wheel. The wheelstandpro cost almost $200. This wheel and set up was a definite step up for me from the Mad Catz and it was somewhat better than the MS wheel that I used for Forza, etc. The force feedback is relatively strong and the wheel is comfortable.

My main concerns with the MS wheel were that it sat on my lap, the force feedback was tame, it started to perform somewhat erratically and the wheel did not feel like a real leather wheel in a car. It also did not work on my PS3 or PC. My main concerns with the Logitech Driving Force GT wheel were that it did not work on my Xbox 360, the wheel did not feel like a real leather wheel in a car and the pedals felt cheap. Don't get me wrong, these are both "good" wheels, but I wanted more, including stronger force feedback, a more realistic feeling wheel and cross-platform compatibility (360, PS3 and PC).

My search led me to the only wheel that offers everything I want - the Fanatec Porsche 911 GT2 wheel. I ordered the wheel on December 15 and received it last week, fortunately while I was still on vacation. It cost $249.95. Overall, the GT2 has performed well. It works with my wheelstandpro and the pedals for my MS wheel (with an adapter that I ordered from Fanatec). I have ordered the Fanatec clubsport pedals as well, which I expect to receive shortly. The wheel definitely works for 360, PS3 and PC, although it does feel differently depending on the platform and game. For example, the force feedback is less strong in Forza than it is in GT5. Also, in Toca 3 for the PC, I feel more force feedback. The GT2 also is made from alcantra leather and thus it feels like a real leather wheel. I am experiencing some issues with my GT2, including the 888 message on my LCD screen during start up and some force feedback discrepancies in GT5, but I am confident Fanatec will help me resolve those issues. I plan to send them a support request this weekend. I have found them to be responsive to this point, but they are definitely busy and so patience is a virtue.

So, in summary, those are my thoughts about racing wheels out there.

thanks for the response. however, $250 is bit over my budget. do you have any experience with the 911 Carrera($160)?

I have recently grabbed a Carrera wheel, after using an old Logitech Driving Force for a long time.

The Carrera is a great wheel, well worth the money. While the pedals aren't as nice as the Clubsports, they're fine and better than you'll get in a Madcatz or similar. The Carrera is a good price to feature bargain, too. You get a six speed shifter, pedals with clutch, and the wheel for 160. About the only thing I would suggest is adding some paddles for 20 bucks, because if you wnt to use that kind of shifter, the stock buttons on the Carrera kinda suck for that.

Manual shift in sims is totally worthless in teaching you how to drive a manual shift IRL. Fanatec wheel clamps are not that great either.

You should buy the Logitech G25 or G27 (same thing). Its cheaper than the Fanatec (or atleast if you search good enough for one). It has a clutch, six speed pattern w/ reverse. Good feeling pedals, Fanatec is just about the same quality but more $ and you have to wait to get one cause they only produce so many a year. I just pre ordered the new Thrustmaster for $600 so it better be better than the G25 cause thats what Im currently using.

Agreed, in real life you can get force feedback from other parts of the car, even from the clutch! So what the simulation set can teach is quite limited.

The DFGT is a good wheel and I have had no problems with it at all. I also have a PWTS with the standard pedals and have had some issues with the pedals. Currently waiting for Fanatec to send me a new set.

The pedals feel much better than those with the DFGT but the DFGT seem to be more realiable.

I'd choose the fanatec every time. Not only does it have zero deadzone FFB issues like the DFGT and G25, but it's extremely quiet due to the belts. The FFB is extremely accurate and strong (in GT settings, I have mine set at 1). Not only that, but you can use the lcd screen to alter your sensitivity (90 degrees to 900 degrees), FFB strength, deadzone, linearity, damper, spring strength, and drift settings on the fly in real-time to suit your game/car. There are also 5 saved settings that you can recall for each game/car.

I am pretty sure the 911 Carrera is gear driven:

I think people keep getting confused about which Fanatec wheel he is considering. I am in the same boat, however. I have a DF EX, which was good for what it was, but the lack of 900 degree steering and lack of features has me considering an upgrade. I think I am leaning towards the 911 Carrera because of the nicer pedals, larger wheel and H shifter.

Fanatec and G25/27 are similar in function, but Fanatec is cheaper. I looked forever to try to find a cheap G25, and eventually got a WELL used one for $115. I haven't found anything else below $200.

Get the Fanatec. The DFGT is the other wheel in the same price range, and it's garbage. I know this because I just switched from my G25 to DFGT to prepare for GT Academy (final round everyone has to use DFGTs). The pedals are flimsy and the steering response isn't as fluid.

To be honest i had a nightmare with the fanatec Gt2 wheel. Took ages to deliver and at the time i thought it was great, but then i had a go on my mates g27. one week later id sold the fanatec and got the g27, much better wheel, more support, much better feedback in my opinion and slightly quieter. Not to mention i have sequential now. sweet.

I would suggest a g27 with fanatec's clubsport pedals, thats the ultimate in my opinion.

Do not buy Fanatec wheel! They do not have support they never answer to the phone! Buy a wheel from a shop and if something happen they will give you a new! Fanatic is years back. Do not thing to buy fanatec products!

Way to bring up a thread that is 4 months old! Anyway I have a Fanatec Carerra 911 wheel, and it is great!

I have the Turbo S, and I absolutely love it. Tried a T500RS, and am very glad I stuck with my Turbo S.

Oh, and Finally, moved to the correct subforum.

;)

What do you like better about the turbo S? I have the Turbo S also and was eyeballing the T500.

Funny, I have bought several items from Fanatec and have always received fast shipping. When I had a problem they responded to my email within 36 hours with a very agreeable resolution. I love the 5 posts total and no details/facts given - it really helps the believability of your concerns.

Agree 100%. I drive manual in real life and cannot get the hang of it on my Turbo S. Nothing against the product - it is just that there is none of the feedback you get on a real car. Plus you are typically driving and shifting at much faster speeds in a game than in real life.

The amount of on the fly adjustments (steering ratio, FFB, Drift, Linearity, etc...)
Paddles attached to wheel (not the base like the T500)
Clubsport Pedals (mine are inverted) are far superior to the Thrustmaster units.

That being said, the FFB on the T500 is amazing.

You defenently won't regret learning to drive stick. I just started driving and learned on a stick the very first time. (I'm 13 BTW) Mazda Miata is what I am learning on.

Thank you very much for the explanation! I appreciate it.
FFB was one of the selling points for me, but I think I am leaning torwards some "buttkickers" to get some extra feedback.
Sorry to go off topic OP.
