I guess that isn't designed for CPUs. In which case I suggest you go get some proper thermal paste. (Although I don't think your problem is fully down to heat, but if your going to redo the cooling then you need to use it).

I reckon I'll be investing in some of that, but so far, I'm totally amazed at how much of a difference the last-ditch fix has made. The computer now boots up every time, and hasn't hung once, despite fairly heavy usage this weekend. I reckon it might need re-doing pretty regularly, but if it makes my laptop usable again, it's worth it. Still, the USB problem has me stumped - however, the CD-ROM (which wasn't working either) is now working again with no problems...
