I have just run a Norton Virus Scan on my computer and it has identified something called Dialer Generic which as I understand I must delete manually. I have run a search of my Drives and cannot find it.
I am not that computer literate so I am asking all you computer experts if it is worth bothering about. If so, how do I delete it? Can anybody throw any light as to what it actually is?
Cheers.

Have just run Spybot S&D - all it picked up was a tracking cookie. I have no idea whether this is connected :indiff:

It's very unlikely that the two are related.

The dialer might have been deleted already. It shouldn't cause much trouble unless you're on dial-up. And of course wikipedia can be used to look things like this up.

I'm on broadband. It's strange that I can't seem to locate it anywhere. I have noticed that my favourites list has changed. For example, GTPlanet was on there and it had disappeared completely from the list!!

Have no idea about your computer knowledge, but have you enabled these advance search options:
-Search system folders
-Search hidden files and folders
Might be different words, i'm using a dutch version.

Also check the MSConfig startup options, and see if it is there. The name of the app might very from the exe file that launches it...

Sorry to be such a pain - but is that from the "Run" menu in the Start menu?

Cheers,

Yes it is. Type in 'msconfig' and look under the Startup tab.

Have just opened msconfig - all types of alien language but nothing that appears connected to Generic , from what I could tell. Does anyone know what I should be looking for? :nervous:

When Norton detects the virus, does it not give you the path?

No it directs me to the Norton Website but that does not make it clear as to how it can be deleted!! It just gives basic info etc.

Ran Norton scan again. Dialler Generic was again found. This time I found the path. It was attached to Program Files/ Online Services/ BTYahoo. I deleted the whole BTYahoo File in the hope it will do the job.
Interestingly the computer is a lot quieter now without the awful continual scratching sound coming from the hard drive.
