Hey there. :) I went around, using the search engine with the words worth and buying, and came up empty handed.

Did you feel that your PS3 was worth paying all that much money for it?

I believe it is worth it, you can turn the game off and on with your controller, switch memory cards with your controller, and do just about anything without getting up, unless you are switching the game or something. The only problem I have with the PS3 is that it is hard/impossible to transfer memory saves from the hard drive on PS3 on to a PS2 memory card. :guilty:

So how do you guys feel about your PS3? Think it was worth all that money?

It's a little bit too early to say, but I'd say that I've had plenty of good use out of it already and as a unit, it's only yet in its infancy. In terms of what this baby can do, we haven't seen the half of it yet...

I use a G25 wheel so I can't exit the game with it. Also the PS3 should be able to read a setup disc for a wheel(it is a computer). How hard would it be to have a screen that has each function in the game that says push this button for this function.

The first time I played a Blu-ray movie, Black Hawk Down, my PS3 already became well worth the price, espcially when compared to the $1,200 Panasonic Blu-ray player at the time.

Since then, after a few hundred hours of Blu-ray movies and 1080p upscaled DVD movies, a couple hundred Folding@Home work units completed, and countless hours of gameplay from several games both on disc and downloaded, and using the PS3's ability as a media server, showing pics and home movies... it has paid for itself many times over already! 👍👍

I have yet to really use it as a game system but if I still didn't think it was worth it I wouldn't have bought one. Even now with no games, there's internet, bluray, and soon a DVR?

I am so glad i got my PS3 when i did, back on a nice December 4th day. It is deffinately worth it, with all the features it is hard to say that it is not worth the money. Just wait till later this year and early next year when the truly amazing games come out.

Hell yeah it was worth it! I waited for the PS3, dispite being bombarded (sp?!) by my friends telling me to buy a 360 instead, but I stuck to my guns and got the system I had been waiting for. Watching them sit and wait for their ever breaking systems to come back in the mail while I go home each day and play with no problems was worth the price tag right there. 👍

I think it has been worth it, but I wish I had waited and bought it later.

A machine that can browse internet, play games, movies and view pictures in High Definition as well as taking all the latest Disc formats and even 3rd party hard drives and other gadgets. On top of all, it cures cancer!

How can it not be worth it?

I do agree. I've hardly used it since the time the price drop/ bundle was announced. But I've done over 300 work units using F@H now, so it's done quite a bit of work already!

The rest of the features make is a bargain too, like what a couple of people have already mentioned in here. 👍

MY PS3 goes beyond the the worth of $600 I paid. It was worth waiting 5hours plus in line in 40 degree weather last December. There's no way I cold have waited(since i had the money). Waiting in line for consoles only happens a few times in a persons life and this was my second(DC in 99). I have not tried remote play via wi fi yet but its a cool concept.
If i had to rate the hardware it would be 8/10. it will grow to 9 once Sony pulls the rest of their firmware tricks out of their magic hat.

and 10 when the games starts to rain on us?

The PS3 is well worth $600 the moment I put in "Enter the Dragon" Bluray disc. See Bruce Lee's steps in HD glory is beyond.....everything.:trouble:

wooooo.......wa....cha!

The PS2 is the best selling console of all time and probably is unaminously the best console of all time.

Yet I believe the PS3 is a far superior system and well worth the $600 I spent and is a steal at $500.

When you turn on the PS2 you have 2 options, Browser and system configuration. Browser let you view your memory cards and play the game. System configuration lets you do minor tweaking of the video settings and change the time.

That's it.

I'm guessing most everyone in this thread and who views this thread already has a PS3, and you know the PS3 absolutley murders the PS2 in terms of customization and tweakability.

Once HOME is released the PS3 will probably the first console that you could literally spend all day on and not get bored.

You can:

  • Play games
  • Eventually visit HOME
  • Watch BD movies
  • Help research cancer
  • Browser the internet
  • View and print Photos
  • Update your PS3 to get new, cool features
  • Store and Listen to music on the HDD while browsing the Internet and soon while playing games
  • View Trailers and nearly every video you want on the HDD (after converting)

I have a few minor complaints, the browser for some odd reason is slower then your PC's browser and it misses some features, and the PS3 can only play MPEG files (overcome by converters but can be a pain sometimes). Hopefully .avi and .wmv support will be added soon. Also the PS3 won't read your IPOD. Something between Sony and Apple.

Sure, the game library at the moment is not legendary, but look at these EXCLUSIVE PS3 games:

We have

  • Motorstorm
  • Ninja Gaiden
  • Tekken
  • Resistance Fall of Man
  • Genji
  • Great PSN games

We have coming this year:

  • HOME
  • Lair
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
  • Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
  • Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction
  • Unreal Tournament 3

We have coming next year:

  • Little Big Planet
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy vs XIII
  • Gran Turismo 5
  • Killzone 2
  • Metal Gear Solid 4

Not only is that off the top of my head that's also not mentioning all the great multiplatform games

IMO and I'm sure that of others, if you can afford it the PS3 and Wii are the consoles to have. You can play Halo and Gears of War on PC.

I know I sound like a fanboy, and if preferring the PS3 makes me one I am, but my opinion is that the 360 doesn't have much to offer other then first person shooters and mature games like Dead Rising. The console also fails at a 33% rate and if you are asking why did you pay $600 for PS3 when the 360 was $400 the above paragraph is why.

So again, yeah, PS3 is worth $600

I rate it 8/10 if you have a SDTV and 10/10 if you have a HDTV. You need HD for the full experience.

Well I did say "Hardware" when games are taking true advantage of the hardware( Home, PSN, Blu-ray and user created content) thats a different scale. I give the current games a 7.5/10 from what i played. Should be 8.5 by years end.

Well said, the PS3 is leaps and bounds ahead of the 360. IMO i think that Microsoft should have waited a little while longer and developed the 360 but instead it seemed like they rushed it out.

Well for me the ps3 was a purchase as soon as sony decided that they were going to make one. Im with DN on this too, BD movies have been a huge plus, and with all the added functions that have been added, and are coming its easy worth the price, on launch I spent a fortune on the system and four pads, the BD remote & 5 games, not to mention a brand new 46x2000 lcd tv.

The problem for us non-Americans is that it's not $500 that it costs here. It's 699€ which translates to around $950. Then a question, how many of you would pay nearly a grand for it and still say it's worth it?

If there weren't other options i would.

Well worth it for me so far, and the games I want are not even out yet.

I geuss you mean 699 euros? Correct me if I'm wrong I thought the PS3 was 599 euros for the 60GB system which equals $736 USD. Is your $950 price some sort of bundle
?

Yes, $736 USD is quite steep. I don't know if you could say the PS3 is worth that much right after launch but it certainly will be next year. But didn't I hear something about the price of living in Europe is higher so that's the reason behind the price? Correct me if I'm wrong I don't live in Europe.

As for the U.S. price of $500, definitly worth it now if you have a HDTV.

Oh I forgot to mention it's also worth $500 because you can install Linux as well. If I wanted to write and print out a term paper I could do it on the PS3. So the PS3 doubles as a computer. Even more bang for your buck

According to todays rate of exchange
EUR 599 = USD 825
EUR 699 = USD 963

Greycap apparently still has to pay 699 for the PS3.
In NL they have now just started bundling the PS3 with 2 games for EUR 599. Before that is was 599 for the unit alone.

HDTV is not as big yet in Europe as it is on other continents, oh yes the TVs are but not the programs we get. So it is still quite expensive to invest in HD. Personally I'll wait for GT5xxx and hope that by then the PS3 has come down in price.

AMG.

I am ruinning mine on an SDTV and it is still worth it. I've only watched a couple of Blu-Ray movies, but the difference now is noticeable, so I can't wait for when I get an HDTV.

With all that I can do with the PS3 I feel it was definitely worth the price. There hasn't been an evening when I am home that I don't at least turn it on to do something, even if it is just to play some background music over the Media Sharing. I have a feeling that once GT5:P comes out my wife will have to watch all her TV in the bedroom.

After combining this with the sports games on my Wii I don't think I will want a 360 anytime soon, unless I win it from Mt. Dew or something like that.

From what I hear programming for HDTV isn't all that great here either, unless you watch sports non-stop. A few of my friends have it and they constantly wonder when more channels will become available.

Programming has been so slow coming along that they had to push back the switchover date by years.

But from my experience you don't have to have HDTV to enjoy the PS3. Plus, the trailers and images from the Playstation Store all have SD versions.

Before I got mine I kept thinking I would wait for GT5, but then when my birthday came up I just told everyone to give me money and that covered half the price so I went ahead and bought it. Now that I have it I don't know what I was thinking before.

Really, you have to ask yourself what you are willing to pay for a gaming console, PC, Blu-Ray player, and media center. Now would you buy all that for $500 (I paid $600)? And I didn't even factor in the possibly upcoming HD tuner and DVR.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

You can get a bog standard console here for £399.99, which is roughly $800.

Interestingly 699 Euro's is around £468. What kind of package is that Greycap?

The package we get for 699€ is the normal console + Sixaxis, with one extra Sixaxis (of which I couldn't care less), Resistance (the same thing) and Motorstorm (again the same thing).

Oddly enough, the base console + Sixaxis costs 649€. If they dropped the extra junk from the bundle - and the price accordingly - the price would be down to around 550€ and that would be bearable for me. It's still $760 but that's a lot less than $950.

Just for comparison purposes, how much is the Xbox 360 Elite over there in Europe?
Is the Elite even currently available in Europe?

While we get a better deal on the console here, the bundle price isn't nearly as good as you get. It was $100 more and all you got was one extra controller, and just one far less appealing game, Genji: DOB

For 50€ ($70) your bundle also comes with an extra controller and two of the current best selling games for PS3.

If you really could care less about the extra controller (assuming you really never expect anyone over for some 2-person gaming), and could care less about the games, you should be able to sell them all for about 125€. That would at least get it down to around 575€.

I wonder if the current BDA promotion for five free Blu-ray movies with a purchase of a PS3 also applies to Europe. If so, you could sell those five new and sealed Blu-ray movies for around $125€.

That would get you down to around 450€.
