Will there be different speedometers and rev counters for each car or will it be like the old Gran Turismos?

(thought it would be fun to post a daily fresh pic of a Ford Sierra i drove earlier today, i didn't think i would be able to push it over 180, but it accelerated good up to ~203... but i think that is the end of that car's top speed  )

don't try this at home :D

you know they wont do that. the disc will be crammedd full already. they wont have different ones for each car, unless they got rid of cars.

Actually, I found the analog speedometer in GT3 to be one of the most pointless aspects of the game. It wasn't in the first two games, so when you've already got a digital readout, that's what I call a waste of space on the screen.

Not to mention, the analog dial didn't go past 200mph.

I think that most of the objects in the poll are stupid, 4 of them cannot be answered at all. Nobody knows anything right now. As famine posted in another forum:
I don't know. I am not Polyphony Digital.
I don't know. I am not Polyphony Digital.

However, there will most probably NOT be different odometers for every car. Just a waste of disc space, a waste of time. I wouldn't like it anyways, the new GUI looks great.

I'm quite impressed you managed to get 120mph (200kph) out of a Sierra and it didn't fall apart on you, even taking into account that the speedo would be overreading it a good 100-110mph (160-180kph).

the tach is already different from car to car...

look at an F1 tach and compare it to the tach for the viper, the scale is different.

that's the tach though, and it's just the scale, not the design. i thought he was asking if there would be a different design for the odometer/tach/turbo for each car, like a white for a nissan, or a black for a dodge. but that won't happen. just the different scale, because each car has different power/weight/tourque

exactly... i think they should scale the speedometer at least... but to have the proper design of speedo would be great! they could skip the big familybuses and have that instead!

to be honest it was slightly downhill on a big highway here in sweden called E4... I was racing with a new Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan 1.8t... i won! :D

You Sir, are a ****.

There are no winners in street racing. Only dead people.

sometimes i get really mad behind the wheel... and i am a stupid driver, i know that!! but streetracing is fun! it was lots of cars and trucks on the road! and pass them in twice their speed was a real adrenaline kick... i drove from a paintball-game so i was full of adrenaline... i loved it!! i know i might die in traffic some day, just hope it will take time... ;)

sometimes i drive like an old lady too... not a maniac 24-7

edit: btw, are you the man behind Rathergood or just a fan?

I hope it will be different, but I think that won't happen for now, the PS2 can't handle enough memory (esp. I'd like to see more than 1,000 cars).

What right do you have to put other road users at risk?

And what if one of them pulled out in front of you?

Let's hope when you kill yourself you don't take an innocent bystander/ other road user with you.

Arse.

do you have a drivers licence?

if you do (which I think because you obviously have a lot to say about driving) i'd bet you have driven like a maniac sometime... everybody i know have done that! and they are not as stupid as I am, i guess...

i don't drive fast to hurt anyone, i drive fast for the adrenaline kick... when i was younger i drove a moped really fast at night in a dark forrest on a small small road... i got a huge adrenaline kick of that, now my old pal is sold (it was a Yamaha DT '89) and i still want the kick!

People rob banks for the money, not to kill cashiers - but it still happens.

Streetracer = arsehole.

I do have a drivers license.

I don't drive like a maniac.

I don't know you. I'm not one of your friends. I'm not as stupid as you.

Speedos should be scaled like the tacho is. Personally I'd rather they just do away with the speedo, it doesn't add anything - I haven't seen one in a F1 car for a while. Racing isn't about speed in normal circumstances, it's about relative speed - all you want is for your car to be faster than the opposition. It seems a pretty integral part of the HUD however so it'll be there, and it'll keep people happy to be able to see how much they're breaking the speed limit by.

I'm 17, all my friends have recently gotten their license (as have I). They all drive at 130km/h when they're technically limited to 90, and they do so in crappy 10-15 year old cars that look, sound and feel like they'd fall apart at 70. Each day I wait to hear one of them has killed themselves, and I feel no remorse or regret about it, because they'll have deserved it for being reckless. My dad is an ex racing driver and rarely speeds by more than 10km/h. He, as do most people, recognises that excessive speeds are for professionals in a safe environment, not normal roads. It doesn't matter if you're Juan Pablo Montoya or Michael Schumacher, all it takes is one person to not look in his rear vision mirror before changing lanes and quite a few lives are suddenly in the balance.

I've sped twice, by about 15km/h, to overtake people. The 25 seconds it shaved off my drive wasn't exactly worth it. I know the adrenaline rush that comes with it, but personally, it's not worth the risk to myself, my license and others.

It is not often I say this, but... I'm not sure about this one. I was thinking more of a DIGITAL tachometer. I remember seeing in some Cadillacs a digital speedometer in big, bright letters. I think this was also found in the ZR1 and C4 Corvettes. I know so because I played Need for Speed SE and raced a Corvette and the number readout was there. Anyhow, I was thinking of a Honda S2000-style speedometer. It would kind of be like with the Honda S2000 or maybe the Suzuki Aerio. But face it. If your car does 135, why have one that reaches 240 (hell, I did close to 260 in Gran Turismo 2 with a Stage 4 Toyota GT-One road car!). I think for a digital speedometer, it would have to be reasonable for the top speed it acquires. But changes to the gear setup and power add-ons would result in altered top speeds.

But as I've said, I think a digital analog similar to the tachometer of the Honda S200 would work. Only thing is, I can't tell you how to execute the idea. And I don't think that it matters if you are racing the Fina McLaren or the Model T, a digital speedometer can be used for any car. After all, you can't notice the dashboard, so what's the point in saying that such a speedometer should NOT be the same for every car? I think as stylish as the game is looking (especially from Amar's "New Pics: Highly Recommended" topic), Gran Turismo can use a little face lift.

That post confused the hell out of me for a while, so I went Googling and I think I found a pic that might help

NFS HP2 had different HUD dials for each car (only slight modification) and it looked quite good......tghe problem is the game only had a handful of cars, for GT4 i dont think over 1000 different HUD's would be viable although it would add to the realism :D

I like the analogue speedo, but I think the numbers should change depending on the car your in.

I'm not sure what the definition of street racing is. If it is the fast and furious type crap then, yeah, it's really stupid. But I have been known to race people from red lights (though at speeds less than 100 mph) so I don't know if that is also street racing. All I know is that if I'm at a light and some idiot in a camaro starts revving his engine, I'm gonna bark the tires a bit when the light turns green.......

What's the difference between the F and F type and what you do? They're both illegal and stupid.

You always stop before 100mph? What if the speed limit is 30mph?

Oh it's FUN?? That's alright then.

I bet rapists enjoy what they do too...

I think we can conlcude that street-racing doesn't give you respect here. In my opinion, it's a dumb, dangerous and childish activity to do. And it doesn't matter if you're racing someone else or just after an adrenaline-kick. I had a friend with a lust for the latter, according to the doctors it him took 30 minutes for him to bleed to death after the crash. He was 18, and you should have seen his parents and grand-parents at the funeral.

I don't mind driving at 140km/h at a large, empty high-way in broad daylight, but doing it in heavy traffic or on small roads - that's irresponsible.
Grrrr - now let's try to get back on topic...

I believe we will see the dials shown in the press package, with the same scales on the speedo and the tacho as in GT3.

If they make only scale 1:1 like in original car THAT WOULD BE ENOUGH already (same for tacho).E.g. real Viper has 200mph - the same in GT4 and real Sierra has 120mph (the same in GT4).

Because now (in GT3) they had only 320kph / 240kph and 180? Can't remember exactly...

i can't believe the reaction of my driving... as i said i drive responsibly very often... wreckless just sometimes... i was on a street race today, as crowd... i think that is way better than my last hell-ride... it's quiet safe, at least here in "my" town, they keep the crowd of the roads and it is a very long straight (on a public road so the chance of a frontal crash is not big)and great cars racing at great speed, it's pure fun and i will probably drive in the future...

now back to the question...

the HUD should have an emblem for each make like "BMW" or "Volvo"... it would look quiet cool... and i would like to see some different colors too (not the background, it should remain invisible)... and please scale the Speedometer!!! A Yaris will never do 320 kmph, but a R390 GT1 will probably do more... i don't like the digital Speedometer... Analog looks better and it's easier to see the acceleration... Digital is only good to brake high speed records...

Jeez Daan, what are you, some kind of traffic nazi? I live in a small town that is hardly congested. I have driven for ten years and have had no wrecks or speeding tickets. Sure I'll occasionally race somebody from a redlight but I know which situations are safe and which aren't. I don't race through school zones or residential areas. Often times I'm not breaking the speed limit when the race is finished. If that is what you consider to be dangerous and stupid then maybe you should just avoid the "treacherous" public roads altogether.
