DIRT 4 is newest that DIRT Rally, right ?
I am curios then, DIRT4 can be played with VR, I noticed a VR app at DIRT Rally, but can it be used on 4, too ?

Yes, DiRT 4 is newer.

No you cannot use the DiRT Rally app on DiRT4. DiRT 4 does not have VR support.

Just got WR7 as was on sale. Will take some getting used to after Dirt rally. Plan to spend a bit of time then jump into career mode. Still tweaking set up to get what works best for me. Like the Dirt Rally online challenges and leagues that it offers, variety of cars. Enjoy some of the rally cross racing as well. Missed the career mode progression twice on Dirt rally by a few points but after some time, plan to start again on that. Haven't tried Dirt 4 and no plan to due to reviews, time along with other car games to spend time on. Do enjoy the excitement in the voice of co-driver on WRC7 when announcing "finish" but prefer, so far, the co-driver in Dirt Rally.

Dirt Rally for me. Own both PC and PS4.

After Dirt 2, 3 Codemasters went south, Dirt Rally *the experiment that was really gave we SIM gamers a glimmer of hope. Still hate that reset to track... WRC for me has the official licence, however its meh.

Off-topic...
If were going to throw in another 2 games into the ring you should add RBR *Vanilla and Sebastien Loeb RE.

Yes both great games. Of the current gen Dirt4, Rally & WRC7 titles seem to have the best reviews. I did enjoy SLRE and the physics were great. I would put it along side WRC7 in terms of graphics.

It is an open discussion so if any one still prefers SLRE to all the others feel free to say why.

P.S Richard Burns Rally and also most of the Rally PS2 games were great too 👍

I swap between Dirt 4 and Dirt Rally depending on the stages I want to race or cars I want to use, but overall Dirt Rally is the better game, better physics and even the graphics seem better to me (on PS4). Dirt 4 is good, but the "randomly" generated stages lack any defining features and can get repetitive. The concept is great: rallying on a different stage every time basically, but with limited set pieces, it didn't exactly turn out that way. I'd rather race on the same fixed stage in Dirt 4 over and over.

I've yet to pick up WRC7, but I probably will soon even just for the sake of more locations. But my experience with previous WRC games (last I played was WRC5) was that the driving physics were stiff and felt weird so I'm hesitant to grab it still. Maybe if it goes on sale.

It is currently on sale, £19.99 on the PS store.

Sadly, not here it isn't. I checked last night, still $49.99 USD.

Shame. Keep an eye out if you like Rally it's a must have title, the handling feels spot on, at least to me. Big improvement from 5 & 6, (not verified by me).

I ended up grabbing it (WRC7) at full price and I admit it's far better than I expected it to be and a big step up from the last one I played (WRC5). Though, the engine sounds are still lacking a bit and the tarmac physics feel weird at first, the graphics are actually pretty good and the driving physics overall are just plain fun. Small little issues here and there. But I'm hooked, glad I got it.

Good glad you like it. It's not utterly perfect but is great fun, and at times very challenging.

I gotta say I think WRC7 is better than Dirt 4 (maybe not Dirt Rally, but I still wish they added more rallies to DR...) and one of my personal favorite rally games in years, probably since the Colin McRae games. I think they nailed it, which is surprising for a licenced WRC game, with the physics engine and graphics. While not perfect, it's just a whole ton of fun and at times the graphics are just beautiful!

What I do is play with the difficulty cranked up, I turn the entire HUD off (don't need to see times or speed, just need to focus on the stage) and I go for completing a stage without any resets. Something real satisfying about the challenge and placing on the podium. If I win I win, I lose I lose, which is how I found that I enjoyed Dirt Rally the most too.

Just need to get a proper wheel setup instead of using a controller.

I like to play with the visual pace notes turned off as they just distract me, I find it more authentic and realistic to drive listening to the pace notes and if I get it wrong by not listening then I've only got myself to blame!

And hey, there's nothing wrong with using a controller:)

I'm open to owning that one.

SLRE still has the best physics of the bunch, the best stage design (as they are taken from the GPS data of he actual stages and best car list of the lot (even with the Mk1 or 2 Escort missing and eight million Citroens).

It is however the ugliest and worse sounding of the lot, but with a wheel its just brilliant.

Exactly right, I found that I was looking at the pace notes rather than listening to the co-driver and that took my eyes off the road just enough to cause problems.

The controller works fine, definitely, but I'm thinking it might be time to invest in a wheel as a way to add even more to the realism and fun factor.

SLRE was a great place holder for me before Dirt Rally came around on consoles and I agree it had the best stages, but the let downs were the poor graphics, sound and with a controller, the physics didn't seem all that good. It was actually very difficult with a controller to control a car in a slide or maintain stability at speeds, if I remember. Another reason I'd like a wheel.

I did really like that there was a "Group S" DLC though in SLRE. I can't recall any other rally games that had the Lancia ECV or Toyota 222D

The stages are correct to real life. I was watching the Monte last weekend and recognised a lot of the stages from SLRE, when watching onboard I knew exactly what corners were coming up! It's a special game, I loved every minute of it when I played through it. My favourite surface was the snow of Rally Sweden, it just so nice to drive and intuitive, I could really feel myself flowing from corner to corner, setting things up perfectly using the weight transfer, on pro difficulty it was a rush to win the stages.

I am still trying to get the best wheel set up for me struggling. Have done fairly well with that on dirt rally but can’t get WRC down to my liking. Biggest struggle is finding a good balance for wheel movement and not being all over the road/path. I like the games options compared to dirt rally as an alternate but need to get the handling down.

Are the physics in WRC7 really any good? In videos it looks more floaty and disconnected than Dirt 4, which is already almost too awkward for me to play, depending on the car and locale.

I think SLRE might have the best on-snow physics of any sim. 👍 Very intuitive, not too grippy, and not like a polished skating rink.

My copy came boxed with the '88 Pikes Peak DLC, so it holds a special place on my shelf too. I can count on SLRE for its proper sim physics, great car list and stages, and Pikes Peak, while I can count on D4 for the proper thrill of rally racing and some other great cars. And PCARS2 for rallycross! I think there's never been a better time to be a rally racing game fan.

So it's been a month since I brought WRC 7 on sale on psn store for $24.99 and I loved it. I haven't played a rally game since the ps1 days, which was Colin McRae Rally. I am currently waiting for another sale on another rally game and I want to know which one should I try next. Any suggestions? I just want another rally game that will keep me playing for hours in a good lengthy career mode. For some reason, I feel like SLRE has more content to do, especially in career mode compare to Dirt Rally or Dirt 4. But I could be wrong since I never played any of the Dirt series. Been looking at some videos of DR, D4 and SLRE but can't decide. Even though the graphics in SLRE isn't all that great but the gameplay looks good. I don't mind owning three rally games but for now, I need a second game.

SLRE is the undisputed king of content. The graphics and sound are iffy but it's got the best physics of the current gen. I wrote an article dissecting the true count of cars and original mileage (in km) of DiRT 4, WRC 7, DiRT Rally and SLRE: https://simracer.uno/blog/analisis-cual-juego-de-rally-tiene-mas-contenido-marketing-vs-realidad. It's in Spanish but you can just scroll down to the end of the article and look at the comparison tables, it's pretty clear. DiRT Rally is also a great game but with very low stage mileage.

SLRE has the physics, cars, and stages, but to me its career mode ended up feeling grindy, and it's subject to a few random difficulty spikes. I prefer the career mode in Dirt 4. Both games let you create and run your own team, but that aspect has more depth in D4, with employees to hire, sponsors like in the original Grid (SLRE leaves you with a bare livery), and team facilities to manage.

Watching those vids the sense of speed in SLRE looks extremely slow compared to real life n Dirt Rally.

Mainly down to FOV differences, the wide angle in the real footage makes it look faster, and the fact the DR footage is slowed down (by around 40 seconds!) means that was actually even quicker.

Trust me SLRE feels plenty quick enough when your behind the wheel.

I second the motion. SLRE is a visceral rally experience.

I'd take SLRE over Dirt 4, I picked up the latter again recently and the stages are just too repetitive. SLRE loading times are annoying but the game is good fun.

SLRE has loads of content that will keep you playing for months. Don't worry about the graphics or sound, they are good enough, it's the driving physics that matter and they are top notch, it is a joy to drive and will push your skills on the higher difficultly levels.

I feel that Dirt 4 is an entertaining game first and a simulation second. After coming straight from SLRE I liked the graphics and sound but I soon grew tired with the feeling of the cars. They all feel too planted, too hard to get sideways and just not fun at all. I did enjoy the Rally X though.

That said it's worth buying all 4 of the rally games this gen, they are all entertaining but in different ways.

Dirt 4 was awful surely Dirt Rally is more the competitor to SLRE?

I deleted SLRE to make room for PC2 (PS4 slim owner), and all this talk makes me want to give it a try again. Third time’s a charm? Will have to delete PC1 then.

I just can’t get past the lackluster sounds in SLRE to make any progress in the game. If I can hear my pedals, gear shifting and wheel turning while using headphones then either the sounds are weak or I don’t have the volume turned up high enough.

Alright, so which ever rally game comes first on sale, I will buy it. For me, I don't mind buying SLRE, DR & possible D4.

Edit: Forgot to mention, if there is ever a Dirt bundle on psn sale, will that be worth it as well or should I stick with DR?

My faves are:
  • Dirt Rally
  • SLRE
  • WRC7
  • Dirt4

I personally think overall Dirt Rally is still the King of the current gen. I play it first before the others purely as I like the audio of the cars (raw engine sounds) & the clear commentary that was taken in a simulator so he stutters as you go over jumps etc (great) and the PSVR option as a bonus. The graphics of the interiors and lighting of tracks are the best out of all 4 games. I would say it is a must have to try out! It was a big hit on PC before consoles. Enough content to last you through to the next game.

I would pick up Dirt Rally (Good Handling/Graphics) next or SLRE (Physics) then Dirt 4 (DS4 Handling and courses) if in the Sales 👍

I picked up DR and while i'm having fun with it, there are a few things i dislike
- can't change the ai difficulty in career
- ai in rx seem to have upgraded cars right from the start while you have to work for them (they are faster than me in a straight line)
- pikes peak cars on tarmac don't feel particularly good
from the top of my head.

i was then thinking about buying d4 (for group b rx and dirtfish academy), but i heard so many mixed opinions about it.. some say it's improved but not that much, others that it has taken a step or two back compared to dirt rally in a few areas. where's the truth?
