hah! the infamous disc read error. might i urge a word of caution. you could be damaging you playstation games - read on. i live in the uk, and when i heard the ps2 was coming out, i had to have one. i saved the cash and pre-ordered. on he day of launch, i was one of the lucky few in the uk, to actually have an original launch unit. anyway i played the thing solid, and over time, i noticed that some of the games i had were taking a little longer to load up. this got progressively worse, until 10 months down the line, it gave up the ghost. those dreaded disc read errors. luckily, it was still under warranty and i got another free of charge. with my new ps2, i continued to play, but after a few months i started to get the same disc read errors. by now, i was a little annoyed, because my unit was out of warranty and i would have to stump up £65 for a replacement. i did, and this machine lasted for another year before the same disc read errors started to appear yet again. i had lost my patience with the ps2, and decided to get an xbox when it was released. i got back in touch with sony again, and they charged me another £65 for a replacement ps2, but alas a few months later, this too went the way of the dodo - those flaming disc read errors. by now, i was wondering if it might be something i was doing, but i never touched my ps2, it sat nicely under the tv, bothering no-one.
one day, whilst having a bad day with it, i removed a game from the drive to give it a clean, wasnt sure if the game was dirty. what i saw when i checked the game made my blood run cold! only faintly, but visible there was a perfect ring, a fine scratch about 1cm from the center of the game disc. i was curious. i checked my other games, and they too had this perfect ring on them. the ring was more pronounced on the games i played more regularly. my ps2 had been scratching my games! i was gutted, this was why they were not working, and i thought of how much it would cost to replace my favourite games. by this point, i was so pissed off, i gave up on the ps2 for nearly a year and a half. instead playing the superior xbox (or so i thought). after talking to sony, and much wrangling, i managed to get my 4th, yes 4th ps2 for free, and all my damaged games resurfaced for free.
if you are getting disc read errors, i urge that you check your games discs for the'perfect ring' i mentioned earlier. this will indicate how bad your disc read errors are. then, get onto sony and play holy hell! they are aware of this problem, they have been since day one.
before i go, i mentioned that i thought that the xbox was far superior to the ps2. well technically it might be, but they must of both been knocked up in the same dodgy taiwanese sweat shop, because alas, the same thing has just started to happen to my suposedly superior xbox. in the rush to get the latest machines to us in record numbers and for lower prices, sacrifices always have to be made. with the next round of 'next generation' consoles looming on the horizon, i wonder if there will be any corners cut, and if so where. my bet is on the cheap optical drives.
happy gaming!
