Now, before I go onto my thread, I will like to clear this up. Yes, everyone has likes and dislikes with different auto communities. I don't really like American cars, and I'm probably the only living thing ever not to turn my head at passing modern supercars. I really only second look cars like the Mercedes SLS, BMW E30 3-Series, and Nissan GTR's. Doesn't mean that I go looking disgusted at a Corvette. Now onto my thread.

I went to the dentist's office the other day. Both my mom and I had to go, and my mom being a Nissan 300ZX fan, brought hers with her. Being Texas, Chevy has a large influence on the car culture here. Especially if you consider that one of their manufacturing plants is in Arlington, not to far from where I live. Chevrolet being American, and Nissan being Japanese, the drivers won't really get along to well with each other. Now as I'm sitting in the waiting room, a silver Corvette Z06 pulls up right next to the car. The lady door dings the car, takes a disgusted look like its our fualt the car was parked there first. I understand it was an accident, but seriously? Do you have to look at it like its the plaugue?

Its not the first time either, when my dad was at HomeDepot, our BMW came back with a dent like someone hit it with a bat. When we looked at the security camera from the parking lot, it showed some lady hitting it with her door on her giant Escalade, looking, and not caring that she caused $500 worth of damage. And another. When I was at a Walmart to pick up a friend, I saw a nice Porsche 911. I took some photos then walked away to get my friend. When I came back I showed him the Porsche, then some kid and his family walked by. He said something to his mom, then ran over to the Porsche, which had its windows opened slightly, and threw a half eaten Poptart into the driver side window, while his family sat and laughed.

Why do people have so much disrespect towards others and their cars?

What can you do? Some people have to desperately latch onto something to define themselves, whether it's a make of car (or brand of console driving sim—heyooo!). It's pretty telling that in all cases this stuff of course only happens when nobody is watching. So in addition to being imbeciles with low self esteem they've also proven themselves cowards.

I think any real car guy can appreciate vehicles he wouldn't personally buy. I'm the type that loves a variety of cars and I'm frustrated I don't have Jay Leno's budget.

I'm sorry, but you kind of did a similar thing in your post. You want to know why people disrespect cars, yet you just profiled some woman who got out of a Corvette as some whore who bangs multiple men in a car only her husband could have bought....

The poptart thing would tick me off though.

I only ever use Ryvita, it's much easier to clean up.

That's not so much cars as it is nationalism. She doesn't hate your car because she hates 300ZX's, she hates it because it isn't American.

It happens. Come to the Detroit area with anything other then a domestic car and people with rag on you all day no matter where you're at. Typically they are blue-collared UAW employees that ooze out "America 🤬 Yeah!" When I had the Cooper I had people spit at my car, shout obscene things at me, throw rubbish at me, and just be asshats. It used to get to me but I quit caring as long as no damage was done.

There have been hundreds of stories that I've been told and witness to of people with Japanese brand cars being keyed, kicked, dented, etc. It's just the close mindedness of a certain group of people.

What people forget is the automotive industry isn't the same as it was in 1955, vehicles are a global product and this percent American list demonstrates that pretty clearly.

  • Toyota Camry: 80%.
  • Honda Accord: 80%.
  • Chevrolet Malibu: 75%.
  • Ford Explorer: 85%.
  • Honda Odyssey: 75%.
  • Toyota Sienna: 75%.
  • Jeep Wrangler: 78% for 2-door, 79% for 4-door.
  • Chevrolet Traverse: 75%.
  • Toyota Tundra: 80%.
  • GMC Acadia: 75%.

As you can see half of the most American cars are Japanese branded.

When people wake up and realise everything is global and there are very few fully domestic products in any country then you'll see less of a dissent towards "foreign" cars.

Hate to break it to you crispychicken but it does not matter what vehicle someone drives people are generally asses and do not treat others' property with respect. People can turn their nose up at anything they do not like. I do this all day long with Lexus/Toyota and Cadillacs. As far as the door dings are concerned I've had everything from a Porsche 911, Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Silverado and a Pontiac G6 ding my doors--WITH ME IN THE CAR AND THE CAR RUNNING. And I drive "an American" car too. So, it doesn't matter make or model of cars most of the time. It just has no difference what vehicle you drive, your **** will get jacked. And it is much worse in our area (Plano, Allen, Frisco) because money doesn't buy brains and common sense. Just pay attention to all these "soccer mom" SUVs around the doors and you will see paint chips from them damaging other people's cars.

Oh, and you suffer from the same prejudice as you claim to not like starting in the 3rd sentence of your post.

JCE, you're right. This is why we can't have nice things. It's why I'll never own a "garage queen". Life will ding, chip, dent, and otherwise jack up your ride. I had the front end of my car fixed after an accident (my own carelessness). Literally the day I got it back someone backed into me.

I hope you called the cops for the Z06 lady. That would have been the right thing.

I was in Belgium in school and there was also a lot of jalousy when people drove nicer cars then teachers.

I'm so happy I live in Luxemburg. "Everyone" drives Porsches, so there is a lot of respect in regard of car material. Except the little chavs who don't work and can't afford a nice car.

I get your pain though, it's really sad when something like that happens. But you can't change it. Lot of people are stupid. that's the world.
Just use 2 parkingspots to be sure ;)

First of all, your in Texas, not exactly the most liberal state. Second, nationalism is a very strong influence, and I don't blame Americans for putting down foreign cars, especially when their own auto industry is just now recovering from years of futility.

He didn't & I'll bet it's because he didn't tell us the whole truth.

I highly doubt a woman would just go ahead & bang a $70,000 car's door into another car for no other reason. It's even harder to believe that claim when he then said she was a soccer mom whore without knowing anything about her.

I'd usually expect it to be some broke person in a beater (let's say they're a redneck too, since we're all about assumptions in this thread) who would slam their door into some expensive non-american no-good sports car or something. Out of ignorance and jealousy.

I really wouldn't ever think someone would intentionally damage their perfectly good car of any kind to do harm to something that they see as a POS.

Come to Detroit. Seriously, you'll witness it. It comes from all walks of life too, although typically it's some white-trash, nasty looking, shop rat who's spent 40 years on the line.

Yeah...stuff like that doesn't happen for absolutely no reason apart from hatred of a certain make of car. Not even Ford and Holden owners, contrary to Top Gear's belief, are that daft. Those scores get settled at Bathurst.

You think someone would take their $60k Cadillac and slam their door into my MR2 because its not American?

The cost of replacing their door would probably total the MR2.

You watched two of these happen and did nothing?
That's why they do it, because even when people see it happen, they just go home and complain on the internet.

I hear it a fair bit. It's worse among pickup truck owners when you drive a Tundra. They feel they have to put me in my place because I drive some "Japanese truck". Oh sir, you passed me doing 70 while I was doing 40 and then cut me off for no reason? You must be the bigger man. I will pull over and torch my Toyota because it's not worth the presence of your Dodge dually.

It basically comes down to people just not being respectful of others property, I've had door dings happen at my own office, country club, so now I tend to park out in the back forty but thats no guaranty.

I'm still getting my doors blown off on a regular basis, and it sure has nothing to do with manufacturers (i get my doors blown off on a regular basis by Hyundai's and an xA)

but, I'll tell you one thing, I'd give people like that a lecture.

"Can you stop my Chevys from seizing shut, my fords from electrocuting themselves, or my dodges from leaking like they need an adult diaper and not charge me an arm and a leg?"

"I've had em all, and I know exactly where their wear out weaknesses are. keep your patriotisim, cause the parts that are needed to fix are made in china from middle east petroleum and south american metal."

I'd also be lecturing these people about how damn much it costs to pay guys who know what they're doing when it comes to even minor stuff.

Intentionally slam their door? Probably not. But intentionally vandalise a car by keying it? Absolutely.

It goes the other way too.

I have friends who ragged on me for buying an American car, and not Japanese or Euro cars like them.

Who did they call asking for rides when their 'superior' imports had to go in the shop? me and my 'inferior' Pontiac.

The joys of being from the UK. Since we have no car industry, nobody cares where your car has come from...

In all honestly, Pontiac is a pretty inferior brand if you look at their fit and finish and quality controls.

Just sayin'

I find that Pontiacs tend to be a sign of someone who likes driving WAAAAY too fast. Some of the worst drivers going back and forth from work are in Grand Prixes and Grand Ams. Half female, half young male. The same is happening to Oldsmobiles as younger men get ahold of them as well - Last week I paced some young man doing 100 in his. I also got whipped by on a backroad by some kid in a Cadillac a while back. And there's a Malibu that has stickers on the rear window, "You just got passed by a GIRL." and she drives like it.

In fact, I'd say a LOT of GM midsize cars, W-bodies in particlular, tend to attract obnoxious drivers.

People driving SUVs tend to simply be ignorant of everyone around them. It's not that they hate import brands, it's that they simply don't care. Often middle-aged female or male, often in a vehicle they're leasing and plan on getting a new one in three years anyway. And when you don't care, you don't pay attention. There have been times, though, when a soccer mom has either run a red light, or nearly run ME OFF THE ROAD. why? No clue.

The guys who DO hate imports around here all drive F-bodies, Mustangs, or enormous lifted Diesel trucks. They also likely work at Caterpillar. I find the diesel truck guys tend to not be too obnoxious on the road, (They're too heavy and slow to respond to really do anything) but a Mustang or Camaro is a sign of someone who feels some need to prove they have big balls. and they drive like it. Especially when they see a small "sporty" car like mine.

and the guys who ONLY like imports often have a fart can on the tailpipe and drive just as obnoxiously (if not more than) Pontiac drivers. I'd put them, actually, into the same category as the Mustang/Camaro drivers. I once wanted a performance exhaust, but now I don't think I do. I'm also finding that, young women are also driving "tuner" cars, and they tend to be less arrogant and more ignorant.

and then, every once in awhile, you run into someone who actually looks like they know what they're doing. One guy I find myself sharing the road with has a Fox-Body 'Stang, a subtle sticker that says "See Ya" on the back bumper...yet he doesn't drive obnoxiously. I like him. He's a real enthusiast.

How was Pontiac any different from Chevrolet, Saturn, or GMC?

e - (in terms of build quality and quality control)

The joys of being from the UK. Since we have no car industry, nobody cares where your car has come from...

... but they still don't care if they open their door into your car, reverse into it, scratch it, crease the bonnet by sitting on it, etc.

Even if I park WELL away from other cars, someone always comes and parks next to me and, on a few occasions, has damaged my car.

When I had my kitcar, I even had a guy urinate into it! When I caught him at it and challenged him, he said ' F@#$ing rich boy with your fancy sports car!' ... The car in question was a Robin Hood in need of a great deal of TLC!

There are a few too many people around in the U.K who can't stand to see other people happy and enjoying something that they worked hard to afford.

I'm not here to single out any specific car owner as being a tool. Perhaps it's where I live, but I see obnoxious drivers of every stripe.

Just the ones I can immediately recall:

  • Many BMW 3-series (oddly the M drivers seem pretty relaxed)
  • Ford Mustang GTs
  • Scion TCs
  • Honda S2000s
  • VW R32s
  • Infiniti G35s and 37s (they're ubiquitous here)
  • Nissan 300ZX TT (OK, I rode shotgun in this one)
  • Acura RSXs
  • Toyota Priuses (you heard right)
  • A wide variety of Japanese and American pickups
  • And I've almost been clipped by a couple of 240SXs

Yeah, I can't single out any one driver. They're all obnoxious. And I've done plenty of stupid things in cars when I was younger. But I've never damaged someone's property out of spite.

I also got whipped by a...
Sounds like you participated.:sly:

I find truck drivers the most obnoxious in general, whether holding up 100 cars going 10 under the limit, racing like it's a car, or just trying to shove through traffic.
Maybe it's all in the eyes of the beholder.
