Distracting Shift Numbers

Has anyone found a way to get rid of that blinking red number that tells you what gear to shift into?

It's such a distraction while racing and the heads up display is so un-customizable.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I've searched everywhere.

well, it is quite useful, while braking and going into a corner you haven't been in before, it tells you to which shift you have to shift donw to get out with maximum rpm usage, this is only good whilst you don't know the track dunno how i should put this, ''by heart'', you know what i meen

But still ... it's not allways right. I estimate it only 50% right. Otherwise it's usually a gear too low. In some cases even too high, but those are rare.

Based on the Japanese version, I'm sure there's an option somewhere to turn the hud to a minimal setting - this gets rid of license medal criteria at top right and a few other things, including the recommended gear I'm sure.

I think it would be a challenge to drive with the assist off. Sort of helps to hone your own shifting skills.

I tried that, but it just removes the times and stuff from the top, which are kind of important to me.

But yeah; in the (short) time it took for this thread to be approved, those shift numbers have already become barely noticeable.

It would still be nice to be able to get rid of them though.

There were some other things that I figured were kinda pointless as well, but I've been driving around in the game for over 12 hours.

I should post a progress report somewhere :D

It's distracting in a sense that when you are driving, before you enter the corner, you would say to yourself: "damn. I thought I was in 3rd gear?! WDH?"

would be nice to turn it off.

I am still learning the tracks so I didnt mind it but I notice on SSR5 which I have done many laps on with GT3, I was passing the AI by a large margin and those shifting numbers were totally off for getting the fastest lap.

Ahh I thought I would be able to turn it off when I got use to it. -_-

Its not very helpful as u get used to the cars/game/track etc. The only purpose it serves for me is that im in the braking point area. I use it was a braking point, its very useful at that.

I'd have to say the same.

Recently I've been accepting it.

That may be the reason?

How does it know!?

Is is magic??

(sorry for sounding a little senile.. I've been up for some 45 hours thanks to this game.)

You can get rid of the red shift light before the race go to options then go to race and choose simple display and that will take away the red shift light and some of the other displays leaving basically the rev's speed and gear

I think you have to choose simple mode in the options menu.

Ya. This did it in the NTSC-J version. You can turn ALL of that distrating numbers and such off (including the shifter/brake zone number). You can also turn the map of the circuit off. It was one of the first things I did when I first got the game in Jan.

All that is left is the rear-view mirror and the gauges.

I can't see why that wouldn't be in the NA version.

I just don't like the idea of a car telling me what gear I need to be in for an upcoming turn. I mean, do race cars actually use GPS and an RPM/MPH equation to figure out what gear the car should be in for the next turn. I'm not saying this should be eliminated for the next game, but an option to turn it off would be nice.

Uh, you can turn it off. Set to simple display mode in racing options. This also turns off some of the other non-realistic on screen displays. You can turn the map off seperately there as well.

The Red Gearing thing BLOWs.

All I want is to turn that annoying Red gear thing off and leave everything else on. I guess simple gets rid of more than just the Dumb ASS red gear thingy.

Agree. I did the El Capitan and NY courses last night , and many of the gear suggestions were wrong. I liked them fine in GT3, because at least they were right.

But in the spirit of not making every post a complaint, I'll say that I welcome the tougher physics of GT4--I'm getting spanked in the Grand Canyon course.

whats funky to me.. is that it will flash 3rd gear.. and the just as you dive into the corner itll change to 2nd.... just like that...

if its going to tell me what gear to be in... i dont want a freakin progression... lemme downshift on my own dammit!!!

Forget the red gear indicator...is there a way to lose the rear view mirror?
I've already got one button (L2) mapped to 'look behind' as is...To me at least, the rear view mirror is more of a distraction then the gear indicator...

Another example of how the manual sucks: Okay, the number pops up... Does it flashing mean that's when you should change? Or is it "You're screwed!"

I find the number useful. I've noticed it's mostly been higher than it should have been. Change to what it suggests and have no power coming out of the corner.

I like it. Given the sheer number or cars and variation of tracks etc... Nurburgring aside, I'm glad it's there.

I am happy someone mentioned this.
I was like O_o when i couldn;t find a way to shut off the numbers.
Now i at least know i am stuck with it.
Its alright i think its good in some sense. However when i first played i found it annoying cuz it sort of distracts me from what gear i wanted to do myself. Its like a machine thats always hinting me what gear haha.

at first it bugged me but within about an hour, I didn't even notice it anymore, once I saw what gear I needed, I would just "pre-select" it and drive to the next one.

Yeah, that's probably why they added it.

Just so many tracks and cars and people that want every car in the game
