This is what I'm wondering because I think it would be pretty hard to get all 1200 cars to handle different. Does this mean that only the premiums handle differently and the standards are just generalized based on car shape, engine type, etc. Does anybody have information on this?

Pretty much everything with different parameters will handle differently.

This is truly the beauty of Gran Turismo: the procedural way in which any car (even its various separate components!) is turned into a physics object that behaves differently as the parameters change. What this means is that any small change can really be felt, and is not just the result of some programmer putting in data that says how the car handles, but rather that the parameters themselves create the result.

Speculation: It's possible that some of the data of the cars are generalized. I doubt for instance that they have access to all suspension data for all the cars. Things like toe settings may be a generic setting that is the same for a lot of cars (most/all?). Brake balance is also the same by default for all cars I believe.

Differences among some certain cars are indeed large, some are not so. For the quantity of collection, it's already a remarkable achivement (as mentioned above by others).

And it keeps the good trend in tuning. In general, all cars react sensitively and effectively to tunings.

Can this also mean that for exemple, my Honda S2000 will handle differently from my Mugen S2000?

Yes. The Mugen does come with rather different default settings, and has a much harder setup than the normal S2000. I suppose if you make them have identical suspension settings though, they should be very similar.

Of course, the latter is a tuned car. Try doing, say, 3 laps on any track with your S2000, and then with the Mugen. Their times will differ.
Trying it with a Mugen and the Blue Spoon would be better because they`re both tuned and not just standard like the Honda.

Even the miatas are very different.

So yes, just about every car handles differently.
There aren't that many truly different (in terms of configuration) Miatas, though. A couple different engines and a couple different base weights.

If it's simply engine/trim differences, then you won't feel anything. Other than that, yes, they are all unique.

And what about same race cars of different racing teams?
Like Audi R8 team phoenix/team joest (and all the japanese race cars), the cars have the same specs/settings. Do they also drive differently?

Yes (a lot of specs are very slightly different in GT500's as well, to reflect the real BOP adjustments). For example, take the Advan Clarion GT-R and the YellowHat GT-R for a drive in their stock settings. You'll notice a significant difference in stability.

in theory they are all unique but of course you may find lots of cars that have similar specs and similar handling

Most cars are different, but there are some examples where the cars is the same, to even the finest detail. I'll give you a bunch of examples:

Audi R8 LMS '09
Audi R8 LMS (Team PlayStation) '09

Is exactly the same.

I'm sure I read somewhere that many of the Nascar cars were different in terms of performance. I think it was @WhoosierGirl that mentioned it somewhere.

Well, I've tested most (not all) and not noticed any difference, and all seasonal events results when using nascar's indicates there is no difference...

The converse is that you can tune out the differences and make the cars more similar, that goes against some purists but it does show that the cars are generalized and you can bring them back to a desired median. Now getting a MR feel like a FF may not be easy but most cars can be set up with fairly neutral handling characteristics.

I couldn't help but think he needs to get out more. It's logical that all cars would handle differently but there's also logic in questioning whether they do or not in a game. There are no stupid questions--only stupid people that can't spot the logic.

Note: The imbecilic comment that this was in response to has since been deleted.

It does not take much to make a difference, Aston DB9 '03 & '06 are identical except the '06 version has slightly softer rear springs. The '06 version therefore has a lot better traction probably due to better weight transfer, its a heavy car.
You can mash the throttle virtually everywhere with the late model while the other needs finer control.
